Chapter 3 - Part Two: Jess. Guilt

How long has it been since you opened your eyes? How long have you been hiding this from me? Will you still remember me?

The tears won't stop, I'm sorry it's my fault for running. I should've stayed and talked it out. It'll always be in my mind, you on the ground, blood all over you, then on me. Just thinking about it suffocates me inside out. Looking at you now all patched up. How will I live on like this?

The door opens, Synthia walks in, it reeks of a bar. Why wouldn't she be here, she will try her best to not miss a chance to explain why she should be by his side instead of me. What can I do? I just have to look down.

"Look at this," she says. "How could you let this happen?"

I look up. She walks over and slaps me, then takes me by the lower jaw and pulls me up. Tears in my eyes as I look into her, she's amused by this mess. I grip on the chair handles to try and keep my cool as she kills me with her sneer.

"It's those eyes of yours that caused this," she whispers. "If I could just rip them out and burn them, then maybe we'll all have a happy ending," she clenches harder on my jaw digging her nails into it. "From now on, leave this man and his issues with me and I'll take care of them all".

"As if you will, it was your fault he started the habit."

She spits in my eyes, it stings of liquor. Then she lets me go as soon as the door opens. The voices of his parents. I start to take in less air as I wipe off the spit in my eyes. I stood up to the start of crying, and my face turned white as I saw who was behind them.

William, Leroy's younger brother. He walks over to comfort me as the rest follows. They start with questions and I answer them. Synthia is in the back corner with her fake sympathy for me.

I left them to stay with their son and to talk with Synthia for a bit.

"You doing okay?" a voice from behind.

I turned around, it was only William.

"No," I responded. I can't even look up anymore, I don't know if I could even hope for a better outcome.

"You know what?" he says waiting for my response. I didn't respond, even though he still went on. "You shouldn't worry about Leroy, he'll make it he's a fighter, and please leave out Synthia's words we all knew it was her that started his habit," he said.

"Thanks … but I'm not worried about that, it's just … will he still remember me in the end?"

He says nothing but then looks up.

"Here's something Leroy told me when I was younger and you came over to help comfort me when our dad had a stroke," he says patting me on the shoulder. "He told me that night to stop looking down and make a wish above, I will tell you now to at least do that".

"It sounds like something he would say," I said looking up. "I should start wishing."

I spend the night yet I can't sleep, I'm afraid for you. If I were to see you in your dreams I hope that I was able to hold you.

I walked over towards you and whispered my wish in your ears, like how you whispered I love you each morning to me. You thought that I wouldn't hear such embarrassing things coming from your mouth. I miss those days, and the days that you'll grip on to my hands like there was no other day and how each night we waited till the moon would rise. But now I'm wishing on a star while crying at the new moon with my lips on your cold hands.
