Chapter 1 - Prologue

"Violet!" Mom yelled

I heard my mother call for me, startling me awake.

"Yeah Mom" I yelled back at her, stretching my arms out.

I slowly started to get ready for school. College isn't easy. Sure it helps that I go to a community college rather than a richer more snobby school like Harvard. But still it's never easy. Every morning I go through the same routine. Drag my ass out of bed, put a brush to my head and if I'm lucky I don't forget, deodorant. I still live at home with my parents but I'm a struggling actress so times are rough. Screw me.

"Can you help me find the car keys?"

"Yes mom" I rushed downstairs, checking the couch cushions for the car keys.

I'm always late every morning. I stay up late doing whatever school essay, checking out dudes on tinder and working on my modeling, which isn't going well.

"Found them" I yell out to my mother.

"Okay let's roll"

We all piled into the Volkswagen and we were off. I plugged my headphones into my phone and went on about my day like I do everyday.

My life changed right before my eyes. I never saw it coming.

"Jake" my mother screamed, as Dad swerved back onto to the right side of the road. Dad was drunk. He's always drunk. Once a drunk always a drunk right?

"I SAW HIM GOD DAMN IT!" Dad yelled at mom. Dad is always yelling when he drinks. He gets angry when he's drinking. It's nothing new. Mom and I are always his punching bag, he's lucky no one hasn't noticed. Yet. As Dad took his eyes off the road for a split second to yell at Mom, a car hit my side of the door causing me to hit my head against the window. As I opened my eyes, which were very foggy, my legs were crushed and my arm was trapped. I slowly lift my head to see if my parents are okay. I couldn't lift my head up very far in fear of injuring myself worse. I saw my mother. She was dead. My drunk father, Jake was missing. I was losing consciousness as the paramedics came to rescue us.

"Violet?"

"My head hurts" I groaned. Opening my eyes proved to be quite difficult, the light was a lot to handle. Doctors and nurses were rushing into my room, checking my vitals.

"Violet, I am doctor Shmit your condition was critical when the paramedics brought you in. You sustained many life threatening injuries. You sustain a brain bleed, which we were able to control. Your right leg was crushed, we had to bring you in for emergency surgery to repair your bones that were broken. You'll be off of your leg for awhile , you'll then need to start Physical Therapy which I will tell you will hurt a lot and be very strenuous on your body because of the pain. You have to do therapy or you could damage muscle in your leg. You broke three bones in your arm which will also need therapy. Other than that you should be just fine. You did give us a scare though, you died on the table during surgery. You made it. I'll prescribe you some pain meds for your headache and your legs"

"I'm so glad you're okay"

I looked over at Leanne and smiled. Leanne, Sage and I have been inseparable ever since we were 6.

"Me too, but my head hurts I think I'm going to take a nap" The only thing I remember is that I left my house and then everything is blank. I have to remember. I just feel like I'm missing something.

"Violet?" Sage called out.

"Yes"

"we have to tell you something"

"Okay?"

"Sage let's not tell her until she's better okay" Leanne pushed.

"Okay we'll let you go so you can get some rest and then we'll tell you tomorrow"

"Okay"

I felt my eyes heavily drop before everything went black. This feels like a dream. Like someone is trying to tell me something. I suddenly woke up in a meadow, a very familiar meadow.

"I'm so glad you came" I turned around at the sound of that voice, the voice of my mother. Kate.

"Mom"

"My baby, I know you must be scared but we don't have much time. You need to be careful. Something terrible has happened. You must watch yourself. Keep an eye on anything out of the ordinary. I must go now my child, I love you" And then she was gone. I knew something was wrong because I was aware of my surroundings but I couldn't open my eyes. I could hear people talking but I couldn't open my eyes.

"Will she ever wake up?" Leanne was speaking.

"Hopefully" Doctor Shmit said as he exited the room.

I was in complete darkness. I knew I was in a coma because I could hear everything but I just couldn't open my eyes. It felt like I was stuck in my own mind without a sense of myself. I don't understand what happened. It felt like weeks before I finally started to wake up.

"Violet" I heard a voice call out.

I could start to feel my limbs again. I had to open my eyes and squint because the light was so bright. It made my head hurt. I was coming out of my coma. I felt someone's hand in mine, I squeezed their hand to get their attention.

"SOMEONE GET A DOCTOR"

The next few minutes happened in a blur. I was poked and prodded. As I finally opened my eyes and kept them open, I was taken for a CT scan to make sure I don't have any deficits.

"Violet glad to see you made it out of your coma. Let's get to the point shall we? You had a re-bleed which caused your coma. I was able to go back in and repair your bleed. I would like to run a few more test to make sure your brain is out of the woods. If everything checks out you can go home in a few days." The doctor left the room.

"Violet, I have to tell you something" I looked over to see Leanne staring at me intensely.

"Okay?"

"Violet your dad is missing"
