Chapter 1 - Slaughter

I didn't know what was happening. I just woke up and my entire family was in a panic. I saw smoke. I started running downstairs. My father was holding off thugs that were attacking everything in sight.

"Run, run and do NOT turn back!" he yelled at me. I started running, my mother and sisters were behind me. When I stopped I was deep inside a forest behind my house. I didn't see my family anymore.

"AAAAAAAAAH!!!!!" frantic screams. That was my mother, when that realization dawned on I ran towards the noise. When I arrived it was too late. My mother and two sisters were lying there. Throats slit, clothes torn.

Gods no, please no. I started running back towards my house. Nothing was left, then I saw the nanny on the ground, my baby brother was lying next to her. I entered and my dad was burned to a crisp. Nothing was left, nothing but the damn pen those thugs had come for.

I could see them lying on the ground, at least my dad had took them with him. The pen started glowing. Oh, NONONONONONONO. I will not be followed around by the slaughter that ensues when someone obtains you.

Too late.

--------------------------

The next day.

"Maura, here! He's alive!" I saw a young boys body next to his father's burned body. "Gods, what this kid must have seen." I said. "He matches the descriptions of the eldest kid, Leo." the CSI Amada said.

"Do we know what happened?" I ask whilst carrying Leo to the ambulance. "The Whisperer. His gang is cracking down on anything that might oppose him. The supes can't do anything because he's untraceable and his a lot of friends in high places."

"Why, this family. They're not supes, they don't have influence on the party's that are neutral and as far as I can see they were not that loved by the community." That's the question, isn't it? Why?

"I think there might have been a supe here." Amanda says. "Why, no supe has reported being here." "See these guys? They are all generals, just under the whisperer himself and they are all dead. ''Wait what?''

Whatever had happened here, this was supposed to be impossible. The generals all had extremely strong powers, at the same level as the strongest supe. For all of them the be dead meant that someone strong enough to kill the strongest superhero existed.

"Whoever was here, I do not want to meet him in real life." I said to Amanda. After wrapping up we went to the hospital to see if the kid was awake.

"Who are you visiting?" the receptionist asked. "Leo Morgen." we answer.

When we get to his room we see that it's in the supe wing. "Why here, he was assessed to not have any superpowers just before being brought here." Everyone is tested at birth, these tests show us if the person has abilities.

"Did you test him for an artifact?" the doctors asked. "No, but they are so rare ... Wait, are you saying that he has an artifact?" A look of surprise spreads over my face. "Not just that, he's bonding with it."

Artifacts, to explain them I need to explain superpowers. Superpowers come in surges. Every so often there's a great age of people with superhuman abilities who grow stronger and stronger and then the appearance of abilities starts to decline.

During the age of the gods, an age where the strongest abilities known to man had been awakened, the so called gods had found a way to give normal people superpowers, the artifacts. But if you are just using the artifact, the effect is weak. If you bond with the artifact, you can use it to its full potential.

After finding out that it was unknown when he would awake, especially because he was bonding with an artifact, we left and started our investigation in hopes of finding clues that might lead us to The Whisperer.

--------------------------

I woke up in a forest, the strength had returned to my limbs."Whe-where am I?" The forest before was totally different from the forest behind my house. Gods, am I dead?

Suddenly a light came flying towards me. Noooooooo, please don't have me be reincarnated into 'The legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time', I do not need to hear "HEY LISTEN." for the rest of my life.

Then I notice that the light isn't an annoying fairy. No, it's a glowing floating pen. "You have been chosen by me, Homer's pen, to wield my powers and avenge your family." A voice that seemed to come from the pen said.

"No." I said. I wasn't a hero, I didn't even like most people. People were assholes and if they died most probably deserved it. "I can help you avenge your family." it said, trying to tempt me.

"Maybe." I really did want to kill the guy who did that to my family. I know why they tried to kill us all. The pen disappears if the entire lineage wielding the pen dies out, the pen disappears for some time. That doesn't mean they just get to keep killing until we"re all dead.

"What, are you a chicken, afraid to fight the big baddy?" suddenly the voice changed. Were it had first sounded extremely masculine, it now sounded like the voice of a woman.

"That will not work. Also, why did your voice change?" Now I wonder, do pens have a gender? "F*ck, I need to stop letting my emotions get the better of me. Dude, I'm desperate ok. You're the last of your lineage and if you die, I have to go back to that place. I really don't" Ok, definitely female.

"Wait, I'm the last?" I knew what that meant. I would have asked her to be someone else's problem but if I'm the last then that meant that I was bonded to this pen either way.

"Ok, I'll do it. First answer this question, where am I?" Gods, this was going to be a long day.
