Today was no different from others. Waking up early, preparing and getting to work before 8am for prepping was my daily routine. Although the real work begins at 11am, that, I am thankful for. My only off days are Saturday and Sunday. I couldn't afford to take a leave or miss a day. I really needed the job, I have bills to pay and mouths to feed.
I am the first of four children. My dad died 8 years ago when I was 12 years old, things got hard fast. My mom is trying but she needs help so I need to try harder that is why I moved to Miami to get better opportunities.
Anyway, today is Monday and one of the busiest days in Mendoza's kitchen restaurant. I have been on my feet for almost 3 hours. It feels like I am going to collapse any minute from now. My shift ends by 2pm and I can't wait for the remaining 30 minutes.
I looked up at the clock again at what seemed to be the hundredth time. Finally, I could go home and rest for a few hours before preparing for my second job, bartending at a nearby bar.
"Louise, it's good you are here, the bar is packed to the brim!" exclaims Jenny, who is the owner and also my coworker.
My shift ended at 10:30pm and I walked home. Later I spoke to my mum and siblings on the phone, ate dinner and slept off.

Customers trickled in and out of the restaurant. Business seems so good today. I had been assigned tables A, D, H, J, M.
The tables in the restaurant were lettered alphabetically A -P for easy recognition. Music flowed lightly from the stage by the Phoenix band.
"I am a woman, a woman with a heart, I deserve your all. I'm not some girl who don't know what she wants. I'm a woman, I need to be touched, I need to be loved being just your woman, I'm enough."
I bobbed my head to the chorus of 'woman' by Toni Braxton as I made my way cleaning tables around the now empty restaurant.
Music is truly the way to my heart.
"Lou, Lou Can you accompany me to a Seminar at my church on Sunday." Missy asked, before giving me a puppy dog look.
I pretended to think for a minute before answering her.
"What's the seminar all about and what time." Missy is one of the few friends I have at work. She's a very friendly person and also very persuasive.
"Well it's a seminar for couples and the guest speaker is Dr. Teresa Diaz. It starts by 1pm." she responded. "Anyway I will come pick you up by 12pm. I am so excited!" she screeched.
Wait am I missing something, why would she be excited about a seminar. I gave her a look before responding;
"OK no problem, I will be waiting".
"So I take it that you didn't know Dr. Teresa Diaz. She's a well known psychologist and mother of a beautiful daughter,Maya and two eligible bachelors Alejandro and Sebastian. Are you living under a rock." she exclaimed.
I chuckled, "no need to give me their life history. I am not interested. Anyway our shift has ended, see you tomorrow."
