Chapter 3 - A Debt Paid

"Sir, we spotted Leo early this morning by himself getting on a carriage that is headed out of the capital. It seemed as if he had all of his belongings with him. We stayed a bit to watch his home but both of his servants are still going about their day. It seems as if Leo is going on a journey of some sorts all alone.", said the subordinate as he reported his findings to the man who referred to Leo as a "little mongrel".

"So he's running away then, maybe he's not a fool, after all, but a coward instead."

"Should we continue to trail him, sir?"

"Follow him until the border of the capital, then stay there for two days to see if he returns, keep monitoring those old servants of his as well. Dismissed."

After receiving instructions that left no room for negotiation, the individual who gave the report simply nodded and left.

"A 500-year long family is going to end with their last son being a coward eh? A fitting end for a cowardly family."

Two days letter

"Report.", said the man, as he sat in his study with a cup of tea on his desk, as this is his preferred place to be when taking or giving out instructions to those that work for him.

"Sir it has been two full days since Leo left the borders of the capital and the scope of our surveillance, but he hasn't returned once. His servants have also been going about their lives normally. I think it's safe to assume that he is long gone, and we need no longer worry about him."

With a sense of irritation in his voice, the man responded by saying,

"Let that be the last time you tell me what you "think" about anything. There will not be a second warning"

This sent shudders down the spine of the individual giving the report, he knew what happened to people who dissatisfied the man in front of him.

"Keep surveillance up around the borders for two more days, if there's still no sight of him or any suspicious movements from his servants, then cease all activities regarding the matter and return to normal operations. That is all, leave."

After about another week passed, and the observation of the border went away, a certain hooded man slowly but surely made his way through the capital. Like a cat shrouded in the darkness of the night, this man nimbly and swiftly made his way from district to district until he finally reached the outskirts of the most heavily guarded residential area in the capital city of Grayleon and perhaps the entire country. Home to the most influential individuals in the country, It is not a place where you'd expect to find anyone that isn't a guard walking around at night, but this is where the hooded man ended up. Using the darkened sky like a veil, along with various alleys, this hooded man dipped and dived and somehow evaded the eyes of a multitude of guards till he eventually reached his destination.

One large particular mansion, located in the inner circle of this residential area and surrounded by eight mansions of a similar design. Yes, it is owned and lived in by a member of the esteemed council of Grayleon, a descendant of one of the initial group of people who helped create a foothold in the days following The Great Reset. His name was Ron Campbell, a grey-haired forty-year-old man, he was widely respected and known as a stern but just leader in the eyes of the public, but behind closed doors, his reputation wasn't a good one. He was ruthless, corrupt, and never once showed mercy, this induced fear into the minds of all those who knew about this side of him. His one public downfall though, was the fact that he was still unmarried, with no children to carry one his prestigious family name, which means this large mansion of his was only home to him and a few servants, an ever-changing rotation of guards. A rotation of guards that were slowly and efficiently being taken out or bypassed one by one by the same hooded individual. After making short work of numerous unsuspecting guards, this hooded figure quickly made their way in and upstairs the mansion in a nimble manner. After various turns and more guards going to sleep early, the intruder arrived at their destination, the bedroom of a council member who was far too deep in their slumber to hear the door of his bedroom being slowly and carefully opened.

After being slapped awake by an unknown assailant, councilman Ron Campbell immediately showed a sense of calm that wouldn't be expected in his current predicament. It was almost as if he was expecting of this nature at some point in his future.

"May I know which one of my many enemies grew enough balls to finally kill me?", said Ron mockingly even as a dagger was pointed at his throat.

"The Williams family sends their regards", said a voice that was devoid of all emotion.

But that one statement was enough to cause great shock in the mind of Ron Campbell, and just like that his throat was sliced with extreme precision, causing Ron's last thought in this world to be "So he wasn't a coward".

On a night shrouded in darkness, an assassination carried out with utmost precision was carried out on a member of the highest form of power in the country of Grayleon, his elite and numerous guards were rendered useless in the face of a top tier assassin, the type of assassin that was said to cost a generation's worth of fortune. More than what you'd expect to find in the hands of the normal families in the capital, not even in the hands of a ruined family that dates back 500 years. Once this news came to light, the capital saw its security doubled or even tripled on every street, while the remaining members of the council wracked their minds and suffered many sleepless nights trying to figure out who caused this to happen.

Meanwhile in an inn located in a town close to the borders of Grayleon, was the mastermind behind this incident was being woken up out of his sleep in the middle of the night just a few days later by a figure dressed in all black.

"The deed is done, and with that consider my debt to your father paid.", said a feminine voice that lacked emotion, and immediately following that statement, without waiting for a response she quickly left.

This brought on a sad smile on the face of Leo, as the revenge for the late death of his parents and grandfather was finally carried out.
