Chapter 14 - My Humanity

Everett Ailan's/Malefici's P.O.V

"This is where I found you guys earlier today", Galifici motioned at the building I supposedly fell asleep on.

"Where could she have gone?"

He pointed at a long row of buildings. "Last I saw her, she was heading that way."

I nodded and started our journey. We tried to lay low throughout the night in order to not cause any trouble, but that was hard to do, even in the middle of the night, since my face was plastered on every local news channel after what I did to the school a couple days ago.

Although I wanted to forget about that stupid dream, I think it would come in handy. Something happened to Justine in my dream, I just needed to figure out where it all took place.

We arrived close to the edge of town, and Galifici sighed deeply. "She's probably fine, Malefici. She most likely went back home after looking around today."

I glared at my brother. "Something happened, I just know it."

I tried to think of a way to remember where my dream took place, but the only solution I found would have been a painful one.

"I need you to do something for me, it'll give us a location."

"What is it?"

"I need you to electrocute me, it'll either show me where she is or bring me to Dark Space. Either way, we'll find her."

"You want me to electrocute you? Have you lost your mind?! What if you are killed, huh?!"

I slapped him maybe a little too hard. "I don't want you to, I need you to. A little electricity isn't going to kill me, moron. You're a Villain too, so you should already know that."

He frowned and rubbed the red mark on his face with his gloved hand. "Fine, but how do you suppose we do this? It's not like I can create electricity from my own two hands!"

I looked around for anything that screamed "danger", and I found a couple of loose wires hanging just a few meters above our heads.

"Get that wire right there, but don't let it zap you."

"Why do I have to do it?"

"Because I told you to."

His shoulders slumped and he did a few parkour tricks to reach the wire before carefully pulling it down. "Last chance to go back, are you sure about this?"

"Just do it already, it's not the end of the world."

He poked the wire into my torso, and my my head went blank for two seconds. I was looking down at the city during the previous day, and a figure jumping across the rooftops caught my eye.

"Justine?"

She looked like she was in a hurry. Before I got too confused, I looked about 10 yards behind her to find one of the monsters that was attacking the city earlier.

Once she got out of the city, she started to sprint through the dense forest, and she abruptly stopped once she reached the cliff. She looked down, back at the monster, then back down again before throwing herself off the ledge.

The monster followed her down, and that is where the vision ended.

When I was brought back to reality, I could feel my brother repeatedly calling my name.

"Everett? Everett?! Wake up!"

I swatted him away before standing back up. "Don't call me that, we can't let anyone know who we are."

"Did you find her?"

I looked at him. "You remember that cliff that Dad would always let us play around?"

"Sadly, yes."

"She is over there."

"Alright. Then lets go." He started to turn away before facing me again. "Are you okay?"

"Look, we need to be careful in that area. Those black monsters are there, and Justine may or may not be gone. Is there water down there?"

"I thought there was, and it has been raining a lot recently, so there should be a lot of water there now."

During our trip through the forest, I kept thinking about that vision I had. What if it was wrong? What if something happened to her?

The next thing I know, a hand was grabbing my vest and yanking me back.

"Malefici! Stop! You almost threw yourself off the edge!"

I looked around, then straight down. We were already at the cliff Dad took us to many years ago.

He let go before poking his head over the edge. "How do you suggest we get down there? We can't jump in the middle of the night, and we have no clue as to how deep it is."

As much as I wanted to just jump over, I knew that was probably the dumbest thing we could do right now. Even if we did survive the fall, those black monsters would probably find us if we made too much noise. So either way, we would die jumping off the cliff.

Luzor's shadow appeared by my side. "What are you two waiting for? If you're planning on getting down there, just jump!"

"We can't!" I whisper-yelled. "Those monsters are down there, and they'll find us if we jump!"

He flung his arms into the air. "Well then! If you two are just gonna stand here and do nothing, you might as well go back home!"

"Luzor! Just tell us how we can get down there and we'll do it! You don't need to pitch a fit over it!"

Galifici started to laugh, but I just ignored him.

"Malefici, when someone becomes a Hero or Villain, they are given more than one form. The form that you are in right now is the standard version. You would normally have to practice in order to achieve the others, but when push comes to shove, you can use the others whenever you need them."

"What do I need to do?"

"You are just an average demon right now, you are nothing special. In order for you to get down there, you need to give up a little more of your humanity."

"My humanity?! Why would I do that?!"

A sudden rush of wind knocked me off my feet. "You came here to save your partner, right? Some partner you are, giving up when the slightest problem comes your way!"

I ground my teeth as I picked myself back up. "What would part of my humanity be replaced with?"

"Animal Demon blood, but the amount will be too small in your human form to even notice."

I felt like a jerk for debating if it was worth it or not, but I shook me head in disgust. It's either give up part of my humanity to save my partner, or keep my humanity and indirectly kill my partner. There was no competition here.

I closed my eyes. "Just do it already! We need to hurry!"

A stronger gust of wind pushed me back, and someone caught me before I was completely knocked down. My heart hurt for what felt like centuries, but once it subsided, I felt even stronger than before.

Once I opened my eyes, I noticed that Luzor was gone. Galifici helped me back up, and he commented on my slightly different look.

"Are those claws?"

I looked down at my hands, and protruding from my gloved were white claws about the length of a toothpick. What animal was I anyway?

"C'mon, we need to get going." I swung myself over the ledge and started the trek down. Galifici was always better than me at climbing, so I assumed that he wouldn't have a problem climbing in that form of his.

Although it took a while, we made it down without making an noises. I shook my hands and feet out before reverting back to my standard form.

We slowly walked across the boulders while searching for the White Wizard. I wished the vision could have told me more, like what happened after they went over the edge, but I had to settle with what I got.

I almost lost all hope by the time we saw a washed up figure about 50 yards away. Upon closer inspection, I realized that it was Justine.

"That's her!" I whisper-yelled. I sped over to her with Galifici on my heels.

"You weren't kidding!" Galifici exclaimed quietly. "Is she alright?"

I checked for any signs of major wounds, but I could find nothing. She had a few scratches and a small lump on her head, but that was it.

"She's just unconscious. We should take her back home."

"You know where she lives?"

"I would have to in order to take her back, idiot. Now get back home, and don't let those things find you on your way back."

He frowned before shaking his head and climbing back up the cliff.

I turned back to the sleeping Hero. Being transformed unnecessarily couldn't have been good in her condition.

I nearly jumped out of my skin when I heard Luzor's deep voice. "Looks like she managed to escape the monsters after all. I wasn't sure about that vision earlier."

"You saw it too? Being transformed with her like this can't be a good thing. Is there anyway to change her back?"

"You're right, it's not. Just do what that other girl told you to do earlier."

"Just by tracing the mark?"

"That's how everything happens in the supernatural world. Being transformed in a state like this just depletes their energy, so it'd be best to hurry up."

His shadow faded away, and Justine's mark appeared in mid-air as if on cue. I followed the same marks I made just a couple days before, and she successfully transformed back into Lucy Rudolf.

I picked her up in my arms. It was my fault she ended up like this. Why did I just leave her like that! I would have slapped myself, but my hands were full.

"Now how am I going to get back up?"

I couldn't sense any darker presence in the area than mine, so I assumed the monsters gave up the search and left. That meant that it was also okay to use some dark magic.

I raised my right shoe off the ground by half an inch and clicked it against my left. Black magic radiated off my heels, and I was up in the air like a rocket.

As soon as we got over the cliff, I deactivated the magic and landed on the dead grass. From there, it was just a straight shot to the city.
