Chapter 19 - A Dark Hero

Everest Ailan's/Galifici's P.O.V

I managed to get an oversized black cape and a black mask similar to my actual one as a vampire. Since there was no way I could transform right now, this was my next best option.

After hiding near the back of the building, I threw the cape over my shoulders, making sure it concealed my civilian clothing. After slipping the mask over my eyes, I looked in the reflection of the window.

"It's still not enough."

I looked around the back to find a small red ribbon lying on the ground. "This'll work."

Since my hair was only a little shorter as a human, I put it into a low ponytail similar to my vampire counterpart.

I cracked a little smile. "Alright, let's go."

I knew I wouldn't be able to jump across rooftops and fight, so I was more dependent on Justine finding me than me finding her.

A loud voice made me jump. "Hey, you! What do you think you're doing around here dressed like that!?"

I turned around to find a man twice my size pull his arm back, ready to punch. The only thing I could do was throw my arms over my face.

I waited for a while, but nothing came. The only noise that name was the sound of something fairly large crashing against the sidewalk.

"Are you alright?"

A wave of relief washed over me by the sound of the familiar voice. "Justine?"

She took down the man in one motion, which left him crying like a baby on the ground.

Justine did a double take. "Galifici? Is that you? What happened?"

I did my best to regain my composure. "Malefici attacked me a few minutes ago, and I was transformed back into a human. I physically can't transform right now."

She rubbed her eyes. "Are you okay? What happened to him?"

"I'm fine now, thanks. I hit him a couple times with my staff, and he's human now. I made sure to put him to sleep."

She stared at me with bug eyes. "Seriously? We can't afford anyone else falling victim to this. Right now, it's only me, you, and Arch here on Earth. I can't sense anyone else here besides that Siren."

"It's just us?" I watched as the guy hurried to his feet and ran away.

She nodded slowly. "Until someone else shows up, we're on own for this."

I pulled the cape tighter over my torso. "Hey, Justine. Malefici may or may not have destroyed my house in the process of that fight." I lied. It was the only way I wouldn't have to go back without telling her that Malefici and I were related.

Her shoulders slumped. "I've heard something like that before. Why don't we just go and fix it?"

"Um, no. I really don't feel like going back there, I don't exactly know where he is right now."

She folded her arms over her chest. "Alright, we should stick together anyway. Do you know where Arch went?"

A figure appeared behind Justine. "I'm here. How did that go-" she took a look at me. "Galifici?"

"Not well, but I don't think he'll be bothering us for at least a few hours. Since we're the only ones on earth right now, we can't afford to split up."

"What do you guys think we should do?" Arch turned to Justine.

She looked up at the sky. "It's what, late afternoon? We should find a place to crash for the night."

"What about our families? You can't be serious, Justine?!" Arch started to raise her voice.

Justine stared at her hands. "I'm serious. What if we just made civilian copies of ourselves, so no one would get suspicious?"

I frowned. "That sounds like a great idea and all, but none of us can do that."

Justine smirked. "Heroes have the power of creation, I'm sure I can do something."

Arch quickly waved her hands around. "Whatever you do, don't make them show up here. Do that in the house, okay?"

Justine closed her eyes for a minute. Blue and purple lights swirled around her body, and a humanoid mist formed next to her. She let go of the mist after a few seconds, which hurried off to wherever her house was.

"One done." she already looked exhausted.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" Arch questioned. "I'm sure we could come up with an excuse?"

She violently shook her head. "No, it's not that bad. I'm fine."

Justine repeated the process with Arch, hurling a green mist in another direction.

The wizard briefly looked over at me. "I think this'll be easy, since you're already human right now."

An orange mist evaporated from me, which was then sent to the Ailan residence.

"Wait a second." Arch looked in the direction the orange mist went. "If Malefici is anywhere near us, wouldn't that be bad if they found our copies?"

"No" Justine answered. "He'll be looking for Galifici, Justine, and Arch, not our civilian forms, I don't think."

Arch put a hand on her chest and breathed out slowly. "That's a relief. What should we do about tonight?"

Justine scratched her head and looked around for a minute. "I think I know what we can do, but I'll need your help, Arch. "

"What are we doing?" the Elf asked impatiently.

"First of all, we need to get to someplace without too many people. Could you get Galifici?"

Arch nodded before glancing over at me. "Just hold onto me. We'll follow Justine."

Lucy Rudolf's/Justine's P.O.V

Arch managed to safely carry Galifici on her back after a few awkward minutes. "Ready?"

"Yeah" They both replied in unison. No one seemed too eager with anything that has been happening today.

I sped off into a similar alley Malefici and I met that Siren in a while ago before climbing the walls of the building. After running for at least an hour, Arch pointed out the open field we landed in last night.

"What about this? This area should hold us over until we can go back." She said as she put Galifici down to puke. Her eyes were full of worry as she watched him run back into the woods.

"We'll stop here for the night, alright?" I looked around for any signs of monsters. "We need to make a makeshift house for the night."

"We're making a house? Since when did you learn how to make a house?!"

I frowned. "Not using our hands. We need to make sure it's made of light magic so the monsters out here can't reach us. I'm sure we can do it with just us."

Galifici took a few wobbly steps back toward the field. "I think the only thing we need to worry about right now is Malefici and that Siren. I haven't sensed a single monster since we came back."

I summoned my staff and looked into the crystal for any green lights. "Zoom out by ten."

The only lights I saw were two blue dots, mine and Arch's. Even Malefici and that Siren weren't on the radar.

"Malefici is human right now, right?"

Galifici nodded. "Last time I checked he was. Can you see the Siren?"

I shook my head. "She's not on this side of the forest or the city, so she may have left town for something."

The staff disappeared, and I watched Galifici's face turn dark. "I'll kill that Siren." He clenched his fist before storming off.

Arch called after him, but Galifici completely ignored her. "Maybe we should give him some space. He's a good friend of Malefici in real life, it seems." I tried to console her.

She summoned her bow. "I'll just talk to him later. We need to get this thing done before it gets dark."

I sighed, but decided to let it go. After summoning my staff again, I said a small creation incantation, letting the light energy from my staff be released.

"Hey, Justine." Arch turned to me in the middle of the spell. "What do you think these monsters are, exactly? My mentor has said nothing about it, only that we needed to put aside our differences in order to kill them."

I glanced over at Arch, then back to my staff. "To be honest, I think it was Malefici and his mentor that filled me in on the whole monster problem. My mentor hasn't really said anything about it either."

"Oh." she said as she turned her focus back to the energy being released from her bow. "I've been thinking, what if they are also Heroes and Villains?"

"What?"

"I mean, one's that used to exist? Like how there are only about 15 of us on each side. What if there use to be hundreds?"

Before I got the chance to answer, Polori's white mist left me. "I guess you could say that is true, for the most part."

"Polori?"

My mentor ignored me. "The monsters that you see are from the previous Hero and Villain hosts that either disobeyed their mentors, or did something so unspeakable in the otherworldly community."

An idea suddenly popped in my head. "What if that's the case with the Siren? She could just be a fallen Villain!"

Arch dismissed the idea. "Wouldn't she look like one of them, if that was the case?"

I huffed and turned back to my work.

"Your appearances mean a lot, her's could be fake for all we know." Polori answered her. "Your appearance right now was the appearance of our original forms. All of the hosts are given the same appearance and names as the original's."

My jaw must have dropped all the way to the cold floor. "Really? There are no difference's between us?"

"Not a single one. You're exact copies of us. But you, Justine, look remarkably similar to the original anyway. That's why your appearance doesn't change too much."

Arch looked like she was about to say something, but Polori disappeared without a word.

"Where'd she go?" She looked around. "Justine, what are you doing?!"

I jumped as I looked back at the makeshift house. Black magic was being released from my staff, which started to make small explosions.

"Aaahhh!" I withdrew the magic, watching my staff turn from red to blue and purple. "What was that?!"

I looked at my hands, which still radiated with black magic. "Can you finish the rest? I need to fix this."

She nodded before continuing with the work. I felt bad for just walking away, but this magic was something I've seen only Villains wield.

I slapped myself. "There is no way. I'm the Grand White Wizard. I am a Hero, not a Villain." At this point, I was just trying to make myself feel better so I could go back and help.

For some reason, I felt inclined to punch something, anything. I punched a tree, which caused the roots to be flung into the air. The tree itself hit the ground with a loud thud, and I watched as my magic turned white again.

I breathed a sigh of relief as I shook my hand out and made my way back. There was obviously something wrong with my magic, and that terrified me. That was something I didn't need in a situation like this.

Galifici and Arch greeted me at the house, which turned out to be anything but a makeshift house. It had the look of a mansion, with the size being at least twice the size as my own house.

"Wow! Great job Arch!" I tried to lighten the mood.

Arch took a few deep breathes before responding. "Yeah, we did better than I thought we would."

Galifici stepped inside without saying a single word. "Is he still upset?"

Arch looked behind her. "Him? I guess so. I had no idea that we have the same names and appearances as the originals, why didn't the other mentors tell us?"

I shrugged my shoulders. "Beats me. Lets get inside, Malefici or that Siren could be anywhere."

Arch and I stepped inside and closed the grand doors behind us. "What happened back there, anyway? I thought Heroes were only able to make white magic."

I looked at my hand. "I thought so too. I didn't mean to do what happened back there, It just happened."

She walked through the long hallway and into the kitchen. "It looks like Galifici has already been through here."

The kitchen was already a mess with the open fridge, cabinets, drawers, and stains. Galifici was doing better than we thought he was.

Arch cracked a smile. "At least he's more focused on food right now than his friend. I think he'll be out for a while."

"We should change back then, to save our energy." I said as changed back to my human self.

Arch transformed back to Aurora without a second thought. "Lets just get something to eat and go to bed, okay? It's been a long day for all of us."
