Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Memories of a New World pt.1

(TW : Implied Suicide)

The memories Jacob or, Evan as was his new name, received played in front of him like a movie. The life the old Evan lived was full of pain, sorrow, and confusion.

At 4 years old, his family was persecuted from the fox clan because his existence was an abomination. Beastmen were not supposed to ever fraternize with humans, let alone conceive a child. The difference between a regular beastmen and a hybrid was that the hybrids could NEVER change into their animal form. It was seen as the greatest disgrace to be unable to achieve that level of understanding between yourself and your animal self. Evan may have looked like any other beastmen, but other beastmen could smell the lack of his animal form easily. With Evan being a hybrid, his family escaped for their lives, finding themselves on the human continent. It was frightening for Evan because he had always been taught that humans were greedy and selfish. Yet, here his family was, planning to live among the same race he was told to stay away from.

Evan's family was technically royalty, for the Rene clan was one of the larger beastmen clans. With that said, his family decided to keep that as a part of their new last name, changing it to Renelli. His mother and father were the kind of people who could adapt to any and all changes. At first, the Rene clan didn't realize Evan was a hybrid because beastmen children are able to change into their animal form at 4 years old, but when he didn't, it was game over.

The first order of business had to been to hide their fox features because that would be a dead giveaway. There's nothing wrong with living on different continents if you were another species than the majority, but discrimination doesn't just go away. It was difficult for Evan to hide his features at first because he loved them. He didn't want to hide a big part of himself but after a long scolding, he had no choice.

From then on, life was simply unkind to Evan. He had his parents but they were weird sometimes and extremely paranoid. His school years were awful on a good day and heartbreaking on a bad day.

Evan was constantly bullied, not for being a fox kin hybrid but for his white hair. It was unheard on Earth to be bullied for a hair color that is natural, yet in this new world? White hair symbolized unnaturalness and could be seen as a punishment by the human's God. It hurt Evan plenty because he was sneered at for having such unnatural hair for a human, but he wasn't quite human now was he.

It hurt even more knowing that Evan had reached out to his parents about the pain he dealt with and was simply told to suck it up.

The bullying Evan dealt with got worse as he got older and as the children got even crueler. At first, it was simply name calling or being excluded. It then escalated in middle school, (which Jacob was glad they had because it meant this continent wasn't so different from Earth) where the children began stealing his supplies and occasionally sabotaging him in front of the teachers so they would find him unreliable. Evan ended up not going to the local high school, as he had his eyes on the legendary Magic Academy of the Hopeful or AMH.

The academy was considered the safest place for all 7 races to coexist without worrying about the conflicts between different continents. Evan was aiming for the academy but with how often he was sabotaged, his grades suffered and he lost his opportunity.

This was the breaking point for Evan, who had his dreams snatched away just because his hair color wasn't one of the "normal" colors. Evan had already been depressed in the first place, having resorted to self-harm as a means of coping and he simply decided to end it all. His parents didn't understand the pain he dealt with, he only had one friend who was blind to the bullying, and he knew he would NEVER be accepted by the beastmen community, nor the human one.

It just got too much for him so he went for it. Now, Jacob didn't understand how he could transfer into a body that had lost a ton of blood, but he'd deal with that revelation later.

It was easy for Jacob to understand Evan's personality, which was timid and insecure. Evan rarely spoke up for himself and allowed everyone to walk over him. Jacob, on the other hand, refused to act just like Evan did. He would at times have to act similarly to prevent suspicions, but this was a new life for both him and Evan, as one.
