The next few days pass with the group adjusting to life on the farm, they meet some troubles around like a certain Bloated Walker.
That incident where the group discovered a walker that fell onto the well, Logan climbed down with a rope and tied the fat bastard before climbing out and they pulled it together, they killed it afterward.
Logan also sent the trio Daryl, Shane, and Jim to scout the prison from afar. To see the situation outside of it. After they came back the group learned that walkers roam behind the fences, meaning that either there are no survivors, or some survived and locked themselves inside.
Logan decided to leave the prison for now. He along with Shane, Jim, Glenn, Daryl, Jimmy, and surprisingly Rick. Even some of the women joined, namely Andrea, and Maggie. They brought some things to where the fence is. T-Dog still hasn't recovered, so he couldn't join them.
"Now, we begin the first step to secure the farm." Logan stood at the front as he addressed everyone.
"This fence here may be able to hold a few walkers, but once a horde comes it will fall." Logan said with a grim look as he then pointed at the things they transported beside tools, they were logs with long wooden spikes attached to them.
"These are called Cheval de frise, or Frisian horses. It was a defensive obstacle, existing in a number of forms, principally as a static anti-cavalry obstacle but also quickly movable to close breaches." Logan introduced everyone to the thing he has been working on for the last few days with a proud smile.
"I've seen those in movies." Glenn said from the side.
"Yeah Glenn, they are often used in medieval themed movies." Logan nodded.
"So these damn things will hold walkers?" Daryl asked grumpy as usual.
"Yup, walkers are dumb, and will walk straight ignoring any obstacle in front of them. Which makes these things very useful against them." Logan said to everyone.
He jumped over the fence with good agility and went about 3 meters away from it then stopped.
"We will place them here, and they will trap any walkers approaching. Allowing us to work uninterrupted on digging a moat around the fence." Logan then came back beside the fence and tapped his foot to show the place they're gonna dig the maot in.
"Isn't the Prison a better option?" Shane asked.
"It have it's advantages like I said, but it also have disadvantages. We also can't manage the entire prison, and it's position from what you said it was in an open area which make it very visible." Logan listed the disadvantages of the prison.
"Plus, we're short on manpower to manage it, hell we're short on manpower to properly protect this place. I wanted to find some people that can be trusted to join us, and help in protecting and managing the place. But it's not my call." Logan said before looking at Maggie around the last part.
"I can talk to dad, try to convince him." Maggie, unlike her father, believed they needed other people, especially Logan's group. After all, their group has more capable men, as for them? They have two old men, a teenager boy, and three women, one who is a teen. They lack manpower.
Logan smiled gratefully at her "I would appreciate it if you do so." Maggie had been helpful in the last few days they stayed in the farm, not to say others weren't, even Hershel started to open to them more, just that she was the one who they interacted with the most.
"So without any delay, let's start by putting those barriers in their place. And let the digging begin!" It would be a lie to say he wasn't excited to see how things will become.
Everyone picked their tools, from shovels to pickaxes and started the digging process.
….
Later that evening, everyone returned to the farm after a continued digging for 8 hours with them having a rest of 30 minutes two times in between.
"I think we did a pretty good job in our digging effort." Logan, who was with Maggie said with a smile.
"Like how you dug half of it on your own?" She asked, she was very interested in how he was this strong, the others too were but they stopped caring since it benefited the group.
Logan turned to her "Well, the thing is I was born like that, I was always strong, and grew even stronger, not that I didn't put an effort on building it, it was both natural and hard work." He did remember the previous him being stronger than normal, just not as much as him.
She continued looking at him. Logan wasn't blind or dense, he knew she had an interest in him, and he won't deny that she is nice to be around, but he asked himself a question in his mind 'do we even have the luxury for such a thing? We have a lot of work to do and, being in a relationship may be time consuming, which is something We can't waste' these were the thoughts in his mind about the subject.
"Can you accompany me tomorrow?" Maggie asked him.
"For what?" Logan asked curiously.
"There is a town nearby, I go there from time to time to scavenge for things we need." She informed him.
"You go there alone?" Logan turned and looked at her wide eyed.
"Why yes, are you worried about me?" She tried to tease. But it didn't work on him as his gaze kept firmly on her.
"That's dangerous, and very stupid." Logan said harshly which made her wince internally.
"Why? I can handle myself around walkers." She said with a serious expression.
"Those should be the least of your worries, plus I've seen how you react when we take those walkers around the fence and the one in the well.." Logan said in a very serious tone.
"I can take care of myself pretty fine." Maggie also retorted.
"You can't even take down a walker, not to mention other people." Logan said harshly.
"What?" Maggie didn't understand.
"I am saying that walkers are the least of our worries right now. it's people whom we should be cautious about." Logan didn't stop there.
"What do you think most thugs, murderers, and rapists would do in such a rules free world? Of course raid, rape, and pillage the weak. There are all kinds of people desparatly clinging to life, even if it mean changing, even if the cost is harming other." Logan continued dropping bombs on her head.
"My group at least understands that not all people have the best of intentions, it's one of the reasons why I want to gather more people to help fend against those, it's also the reason why I want to make the walls quite high." Logan finished and started walking away letting her process what he said.
But he stopped a few steps ahead and said "If you still want to go tomorrow, you can come to find me."
…
Next day
The group started another day with some food before everyone started getting ready to start working again.
Logan and Rick were alone talking.
Logan said, "You told me before about that group that protects the elderly in Atlanta."
"They're called Vatos, and they told us that they were trying to repair some cars to take the elderly away from the city." Rick repeated the informations he told the group before in the camp.
"You think they would be willing to join us if we help them bring the elderly away from Atlanta?" Logan revealed his thoughts which caused Rick to be surprised.
"You want to recruit them?" Rick asked, already knowing the answer.
"Of course I do, they have more than ten capable men which we need a lot of right now. With their help we can secure this place faster, and have more manpower to protect it." Logan said logically.
"But how can we bring them here? And where will they stay?" Rick asked, that was one of the problems they have, no proper roof other than Hershel's house.
"The elderly can fit in Hershel's house, and the men can camp outside like us. I'm sure we can work something about the living arrangements after we secure the manpower, we can even make some wooden huts around Hershel's house." Logan wanted the group to gain more trusted manpower.
"But Hershel won't agree." Rick argued even though he was also in favor of bringing that group here.
"I will convince him, probably get Maggie to help me." Logan said, which made Rick smile a little.
"Say, are you and Maggie?" Logan of course knew what he meant.
Logan looked at him for a moment before he said. "We're not. Under normal circumstances I'd be very happy that such a great woman is interested in me."
He stopped for a moment looking around him, his gut telling him someone was probably watching or listening close by.
He continued "But with how things are right now, it would be hard and even time consuming which we totally can't afford right now. Especially me." Rick understood how Logan was thinking, he always had the safety of the group as his top priority.
Logan in everyone's eyes is irreplaceable, his capabilities makes him worth most of their manpower, and he was the one who handled the heavy duties.
After the two talked a bit more Logan left to see if Hershel needed any help around before joining the others at digging.
Hershel supported the idea of keeping the walkers away, he also let them carry guns around, since he and Logan had a long argument that Logan won using Logic and Common Sense. He still promised to not shoot unless it's absolutely needed.
The women made themselves useful by helping with other things, Amy and Carol were instructed by Logan to sharpen as many sticks as they could, he cut a lot of them from the woods, since he was still making more of those spiked barriers to spread all around the fence.
Andrea would sometimes join in the digging effort, or helping around the farm, which is mostly Beth and Patricia's job.
Otis and Dale were acting as watchmen, Otis from the balcony in Hershel's house, and Dale on the roof of his RV.
Lori was still looking after Carl, and Sophia too, otherwise she cooked food for everyone, she expressed her desire to help more, but Rick told her to be with Carl until he is able to walk normally.
Logan was about to head where the others were before Maggie stopped him with a different gaze from before.
"Are you still going with me?" She asked with a smile.
"Sure, should we take a car?" Logan agreed since he gave her his word, plus he can't let her go out on her own like that anymore.
"No, we will take the horses." She took his hand and dragged him with her, Logan did allow himself to be dragged.
