Chapter 1 - Upon Admission

*beep beep beep...*

The sound of the heart monitor was nothing but routine to Willow now, nothing ever bothered her.

Nor did the badly bruised tattooed man who had caused a commotion at his arrival - partially because of how deadly handsome and charming he had been, and also because several people couldn't understand why such a pretty boy would get himself in such trouble.

That's why she was a doctor. Doctor Willow Quinn.

But that's not the reason she gave when she sought her job.

"I'm a dedicated philanthropist - I believe in saving and giving life." She had said

Which wasn't a lie. Except she forgot to mention that she was a bit of a sociopath.

In all her studies she figured during one particular psychology based class that a lot of the descriptions of a sociopath related to her. Though it seemed rash at the time, the thought crossed her mind.

Which explained a lot of her behaviour towards her friends, family and anyone she ever came across.

It explained especially her reason for becoming a doctor.

She was indifferent to the suffering of a patient.

And eventually she would hate the patient or their attacker.

But she was effecient, and extremely curious.

Drunk drivers, drug addicts, gangsters walked in daily - and Willow attended to all those patients because she could handle the pressure well. Too well. Better than all the doctor's who sometimes became overwhelmed by treating some people they believed did not deserve it.

But Willow was simply doing her job. And that had made her a professional to be reckoned with.

"Anyone who is objective like that is a lost cause." She heard one nurse whisper as she walked by one time in the cafeteria.

Thing is, Willow had very little to fight for, when a family abandons you, you tend to become either very loving or extremely detached, and Willow was victim to the latter.

And she never felt more detached than she did as she watched this man lie in his bed - wrist cuffed to the railing.

She watched nurse bustled her way around as she finished tending to him - Eva was diligent in her work, she was also indifferent to criminals who needed treatment, but unlike Willow she simply had a good heart and believed in redemption.

Willow believed in reason. Humans reason and make the best choices they could - who was she to judge that?

"How's the patient coming along?" She asked as she straightened her back and walked to the nurse's side who handed her the clipboard of records.

"He's alright; poor fellow, suffered a stabbing, gunshots and a brutal beating."

She frowned as she read his records.

He had been in hospital for two weeks now, and had been to a bullet removal surgery and had his stab wound stitched up.

She tilted her head and studied his body. Wires attached to his arms and skin blotched red and purple with colour from all the inflictions and as her eyes trailed his heavily tattooed body, they landed on his face - a deep scar ran across his right eye, from above his eyebrow down to where his cheek began.

She felt her eye twitch. A moment of deja vu swept over her as she spoke, "I wonder who has a bone to pick with you, Jungwoo Park." Willow read his name and tossed it to the side.

Eva sat on the unstable table beside her that clanked and rattled under her sudden weight

"Eva how many times do I have to tell you stop being so clumsy." Willow drawled as she moved to take a blood sample.

Eva showed absolutely no care as she swung her legs, "This one's different." She said with a smirk.

Willow glanced at her as Eva leaned forward to share her piece of gossip. She was quite fond of Willow, she shared a lot with her and always sought for her company - at first Willow was quite irritated with the concept but she eneded up warming up to the idea of having an ally who got along with everyone else to keep you in the loop.

The hospital was a quagmire of drama - all sorts of characters and intel flowed through and across these walls daily.

"Mhm." Willow grunted, "How so?"

"Well, when he came in he was bloody, and I mean bloody Will!" She winced at the memory despite her excitement to tell the story

"Why does this bother you? You're a nurse Eva, dare I say you see a lot more trauma as a nurse than most doctors here do."

Eva clicked her tongue as she stroked the patient's cheek, "Well that's just the thing ain't it?" She smiled, "What can you say about him?"

"Well," Willow began, "He definitely got himself mixed up with people who he shouldn't and is in trouble with the feds." She smirked at his handcuffs.

"Pfft! How shallow." Eva retorted

Willowed sighed as she packed away the blood samples and dabbed down on his pin prick wound, "Tell me oh wise one." She mocked as Eva looked ready to burst with information

"He's a mafia boss."

Willow threw her head back in a shriek as she fell into laughter

"Will!" Eva panicked, "You mustn't distress the patient!"

"Oh he's fast asleep, and I'm certain he'd be more distressed about being called a mafia criminal than my laughter." She carried on

"Don't laugh!" Eva huffed as her face turned red, "I heard them this morning."

"Heard who Eva?"

"Javelin."

Her motion stopped for a fraction of a second, so slight that Eva didn't notice, "Javelin was here?"

Javelin was a secret service in New York City - but then again it was merely a rumoured and speculated organisation.

"Oh I don't know Will! All I know is someone in a suit was here and demanded he be held in custody and be given the best treatment."

"Well even if it wasn't 'Javelin', it was obviously someone different - hence important."

"Right! And when I turned, I swear I saw someone who looked like a goon, standing there, tatted up and staring at the hospital door but when I looked back all I could see was the back of his trench coat."

Then suddenly the patient groaned as he attempted to toss in his sleep before he slumped down.

"Sir?" Eva asked

"Shhh! You idiot!" Willow hushed

"What?"

Immediately Willow grabbed her arm and yanked her to the corner

"He's a mafia boss you say?" She whispered and Eva nodded with wide eyes

"When he came in, he was in pain, but it seemed to be beyond the wounds, he sounded like he was in mourning - and when we tried to find his family, we couldn't, off the records, quiet life he has, not only that but his case is so suspicious I'd expect police to swarm this place, but nobody except one man in a suit and another in all black appeared very silently and the suited one paid for his bills, in cash."

Will looked back at the man in curiosity but soon found herself shrugging.

"I suppose it's none of my business." She drawled

"Willow!"

"It is what it is Eva, call me back when he gains consiousness." She walked out

But before she could take it any further Eva pulled her back

"What if, what if he needs our help?" She mumbled with glossy eyes.

"Oh poor Eva," She made to caress her cheek, " I wonder what it must be like to carry all those emotions."

Eva swatted her hand away

"If he is truly as high profile as you've painted him - he'll survive, mafia type people are stronger than you give them credit for, especially Javelin, which by the way doesn't exist." Willow smiled and walked away leaving Eva alone with the man.

As she stared at his hand she couldn't help but feel for him, and she for once had all of Willow's attention but still it wasn't enough to make her care.

"I hope she's right, that you're strong and you know what you are doing - because of not, Willow will leave you to be torn up by the dogs that are after you." She told the wounded figure.

Closing her eyes she leaned against the doorframe

"So you've figured me out?" A deep voice rang through the room causing Eva to gasp and drop the tray of instruments onto the ground

"Eva!" Willow yelled from outside but Eva was too frozen to retort, and before she could say a word, the man smiled at her and placed a bruised finger over his puckered lips as his eyes gained colour, the colour a menacing criminal could only posses as she stayed silent and Willow's footsteps faded away.

"Good girl." He said sitting up with a grunt, "Now you will help me escape, or my men will come to fetch me and I'll take you with me and slice that unblemished pretty neck of yours okay? And you're too pretty and kind to get caught up in all that mafia nonsense aren't you?"
