Chapter 9 - Repercussions

I opened my eyes slowly. Then I jolted up. The feeling of being watched was oppressive; my eyes shifted and roamed across the room.

The warden was in my room; lounging on a chair he'd pulled up next to my bed. He watched confusion and frustration distort my face with a smirk.

The warden leaned forward to greet me, his eyes never leaving me. "Good morning Ms. Foreman." he let out smoothly. "I assume you slept well, yes?" His eyes swept across my disheveled form and bed. After sitting up to compose myself, I gave him a slight nod.

He cleared his throat. "I'm afraid I must make things short so I'll cut to the chase." he started. "What happened last night?" "What did you see?"

I froze. He was talking about purple eyes, he was talking about the griffin. Surely he wouldn't punish me for unintentionally bearing witness to that, that beast. But. He could definitely penalize me for escaping and running away.

"I'm sorry." I said, halfheartedly. I was only sorry I got caught. He gave me a warm smile in return. "It's quite alright, but I do need you to answer my questions. I will personally see to it that you face zero repercussions if you comply."

I eyed him in response. He was a mildly handsome man who appeared older than 30 but younger than 40. He had sandy blond hair that tickled his neck and a decent build. His wedding band, I noticed, had been removed - courtesy of a recent divorce that all of the nurses were thankful for. My eyes moved back up to his hazel ones. He was watching me watch him. I found myself thanking God once again for my melanin that helped hide the blush that had undoubtedly spread across my face. I didn't really WANT to trust him but I really didn't have a reason not to. I thought hard. He'd never harmed me or sought to cause trouble with me ever. He'd never mistreated me. Despite my suspicions he seemed like an upright man. Well, as upright as one could be in this prison. Maybe it was just my physical attraction to him talking but for some unknown reason, I decided to divulge everything. Well, almost everything.
