The warm sun rays hit my face and I slowly opened my eyes feeling relieved and fresh. I looked around, my room was a mess.
The sun was shining brightly outside my window. I could hear the busy sub-urban street buzzing to life from my room.
I looked at the clock and it was almost 2 in the afternoon. I went downstairs and mom was in the living room watching the tv.
"Lia, are you alright dear? I heard you cry last night." She said, her eyes observing my face with concern.
My mum was an average women who was in her late 30's. I observed my mum ever so closely, the wrinkles on her face didn't make her at all unattractive. The strawberry blonde hair turning grey told the story of how my mother spent so much time of her life making sacrifices for me. I went near and laid my head on my mother's lap. Susan, my mother gently petted my hair.
"It'll pass soon my dear. Don't lose hope."
Those words made me feel safer, year to year, protected in my mother's lap.
At almost 3 o'clock in the afternoon, the sound of the door knocks echoed from the corridor and I left mum in the living room to answer the door.
I opened the door and there stood Jason on my doorstep. He was holding a white box which he held it to me and smiled.
"Will you go on the dance with me Lia?"
"Jason, Hi! but- what about- aren't you gonna go with Carly?" I stammered.
"What in the world gave you that idea?" Jason frowned.
"Don't you know that Carly has a crush on you? Didn't she ask you to go to the school dance with her?"
"No, She's going with Ryan. He asked her yesterday and she said yes."
"Well that's weird." I thought out loud. I thought Carly was going to the school dance with Jason.
"I think this conversation we are having is more weird as I stand on your front door and ask you to go to the dance with me and we are chit-chatting here like- like this?" Jason said more like a question than a statement.
"Oh, I am sorry Jason, I really can't. Carly has a crush on you. How can I?" I said politely declining his proposal.
"I don't think she has a crush on me Lia. I saw her kiss Ryan yesterday." He said giggling like a little kid as he looked in my eyes.
"Now when did that happen?" I exclaimed, surprised. Jason gave me a blank stare.
"Oh, yeah sorry","But what about Simon? Neil and Honey were looking forward-"
"They have already managed a nanny for him tonight"
"Oh!" Was all I could reply with.
"So I guess you are stuck with me for tonight." Jason said smiling. His one hand on his neck. I could tell that he was nervous.
"And you with me." We stood there in awkward silence. "Why don't you come in?'' I asked awkwardly.
"Really, you asking that now? No thanks by the way, I'll just leave now and-umm- be sure you look at the gift and - uh - I'll pick you up at 7?"
"7 sharp" I said smiling awkwardly.
"Ok, I'll be leaving now then. Bye" Jason said backing off the stairs and finally turning around.
"Goodbye Jason."
I closed the door. My heart beating wildly in my chest. "Maybe this day won't be as bad as I think."
