Chapter 38 - Planning Against Your Mentor

"So you're just some filthy power-hungry murderer? Is that it?!" Miko yelled deeply. "All those things you taught me were lies? Is that true?"

There was a pause and a long silence. We knew we had to move somewhere, being here would only cause problems for us in the long run, and we were running out of time as it was. Imode was seriously injured and we needed to get her out as fast as we could. I began thinking of a time when we were all happy and peaceful, a time when I would run around with Kayla and Byul without worrying about who would die next, or who would end up betraying us.

"Yeah. Seems like it kiddo. Don't take this all personally." Moraco said, obviously smiling by the tone of his voice. Miko winced as if in pain and motioned for us to begin retreating. I would have complained, but there seemed no other way. We had to retreat to save Imode. We had to let Moraco leave the office.

We all entered the bathrooms and waited, soon we could hear footsteps quickly moving down the hallway, and once they quieted, we rushed back to the room to see that Moraco was gone. Imode lay on the floor, breathing raggedly, but alive nonetheless.

Kayla rushed to her side, and I followed suit, crouching down to check Imode of any wounds. That's when I froze.

On Imode's back was a puncture wound. Most likely from a Tendrilite Pathogen. Was Moraco a Pathogen? Or did he have someone else do this for him? This wasn't adding up at all... and answers were running thin.

Imode was taken to the nearby hospital, and Kayla and I sat in the room where Moraco was. We searched and Kayla spoke up.

"Cal... look." She called from across the room, where she was digging through a desk. I turned and could see what she was holding. It was a special injection device. "He'll be coming back for this. That'll be our chance. I have... no clue what to do." She admitted with slight defeat in her voice.

"Well, I do," I said, a smile crossing my face. I leaned in and whispered my plan to her.

"Are you sure you can do that?" She asked, seemingly not believing that I could.

"He hurt Imode. Of course I can do this."

The door creaked open and Moraco snuck inside. Miko hid in the bathroom, also going along with the plan.

"Kayla?" Moraco asked, seeing Kayla was the only one in the office.

"Yes sir?" She answered calmly. "I decided to stay here overnight."

"For a surprise attack. Right?" Moraco said suspiciously.

"No. Of course not. I've always... had an interest in you." She said, her face turning a bit red. "Something about you always made me want to work here... to talk to you."

"Kayla. How sweet of you." Moraco smiled, taking a few steps forward and putting his hand on Kayla's shoulder. "That's good..." He said, using his hand to slightly pull down her shirt, revealing her shoulder.

Kayla smiled and coughed. My sign.

I jumped out from underneath the desk, my eyes seemingly glowing red in the dark, making me look like a predator looking for its prey. Moraco didn't notice at first, and when he did, it was too late. I had used a knife and cut into his arm, taking out a good chunk of skin. I used my other hand to shoot a couple of bone bullets into his stomach. He coughed up blood as he fell to the ground, all of which seemed to take place in a matter of seconds.

Kayla kicked him while he curled into a ball, she kept kicking him, speaking in many languages of angry.

"You nasty pervert!" She yelled, kicking him in the head and stomach, only causing him to cough more blood.

"S-stop it! You god damned children!" He yelled back, to which Kayla kicked harder, knocking him out.

"He's much better when he's quiet," I said, the serious expression still on my face. "He didn't have any reflexes or healing like a Pathogen does... so he must have some kind of Pathogen Ally to do his dirty work for him," I stated my theory, staring down his unconscious body.

"Miko! You can come in!" Kayla yelled into the hallway after we talked about my theory.

Miko entered the room with a couple of police officers, who handcuffed Moraco's legs and arms, dragging him out of the building on a stretcher.

"You really thought he was gonna get his own Villain Arc... didn't you?" Kayla asked me, smiling widely.

"No. I didn't expect him to make it far, especially since he's just a regular person. A regular human." I answered, stepping toward the door.

"What's so wrong about being... a regular human... Cal?" Kayla asked, her expression changing quickly.

"Humans..." I began.

"Humans are weak. They just die so easily. If we could all be Half-Half's... we could all survive a basic bullet or slice. With humans... one bullet and suddenly they're dead. It's... it's pure weakness." I said, walking out of the room while Kayla's face distorted into guilt or fear.

No one was going to hurt my friends ever again. Not if I could help it... and not if I can stop them first.
