Chapter 39 - Investigating Those Close

The Traitor was among us... and at this point, I was not ready to lose my friends. Not after everything we've been through. Pika, Markus, Michi, Montaro, Kai, Kayla, Byul... maybe even Jax. I knew I had to find the Traitor before they killed one of my friends.

"Cal." Michi said, holding a canvas. "Do you have time? I can hurry this. It's for a final project. A huge part of my art grade." He stated.

"You want me to be your final project?" I asked, maybe a little flattered.

"Of course. You have been quite kind to me recently. I must thank you for that. Now, sit like this."

He began moving my arms and legs around until I was in a strange pose, he painted it quite quickly and finished within thirty minutes. It looked insanely real.

"That's amazing!" I said, looking it over once more.

"Thank you Cal. I will turn this in tomorrow morning. It should be dry then. Thanks again." He began to step away, but I was curious about something.

We hadn't seen Michi's weapon as of yet. There was Markus and his swords, Pika and her sledgehammer... Kayla was good with guns and was trying to practice throwing knives, and Byul was starting to use blades, with help from Markus.

"What do you use as your weapon?" I asked, my curiosity besting me.

He clicked the back of his paintbrush and a blade spit out, he then flipped it and held the paintbrush almost like a knife.

"This is my weapon." He smiled, clicking it back into place and beginning to walk away from me.

I thought it was actually pretty cool. I thought maybe I should invest in a hidden weapon. It makes it easier to approach targets if I need to be sneaky and undercover for a future mission.

"That was weird." Someone spoke from behind me, making me jump in fear.

"Ha! Don't get all afraid for nothing!' Kai says, pressing buttons on his little game console. I took my time to look him over, I looked at the game he was playing and could see some kind of spaceship shooting other spaceships.

Kai stood quietly, his attention is no longer on me, and instead is now fully in his game. I took a step away from him, only for him to grip my arm tightly.

[Kayla]

I found Pika and I had a quick chat with her, despite my... disliking of her.

"Who do you think the traitor is?" She whispered before I could leave.

"I don't know, I only know it's not Byul, Markus, or Cal." I said, turning away from her.

"Isn't that a bit biased?" She asked, a slight annoyance in her tone.

"What?" I asked, turning back to look at her.

"They are your friends. Of course, you'd think it wasn't them." Pika spoke again, my anger growing with her every word.

"That's not true. I just know. I know they aren't the traitor..."

"But there might just be more than one." She spoke, to which I ignored her and continued walking further and further away.

I ended up passing by Kai and Cal, who was in a conversation about something. I continued walking to inspect someone else, to which I ran into Jax.

"Kayla." Jax said, reaching out to me. I stepped back to avoid his touch. "Kayla please listen." He asked, pulling his arm back. I sighed and stopped walking, turning to face Jax, I asked him what he wanted.

"I... need to go." He starts walking away, and I stood there, annoyed that he wasted some of my time.

[Calibrum]

"Calibrum Corvus," Kai spoke, his whole demeanor changing, his voice changing as well. "I..."

"Kai. What is wrong with you? Are you... feeling ill?" I asked, placing my hand on his shoulder.

"I am the traitor."

There was a brief silence. I began laughing at his joke, but he didn't laugh.

"It's not funny Calibrum. You... need to come with me."

"Come with... us."
