Chapter 42 - Escape

We ran, our arms, chests, legs, and necks bleeding from gunshot wounds. I could recall it all. The smell of blood, and the guards, police, and government officials all calling us traitors as we ran. Were we supposed to just sit there and let them kill us?

Romi, my brother and I were all alright overall. Romi wasn't hurt rather badly, other than a small bump on her head from when a guard hit her with a baton.

My brother, Isaac, was alright, other than a small piece of his right ear missing from a bullet zinging past it. It seemed to only bleed a bit, and he was lucky to have kept his ear at all.

And I only had a bullet pierce my arm, leg and a small piece of my neck. I was also whipped by an officer in the back, causing a slight laceration across my back, which lightly bled, leaving my shirt all red.

"We made... it out?" Isaac asked, covering his ear with his hand.

"Looks like it..." Romi said, panting. She wasn't as athletic as me and my brother, but she was still in good shape.

"Now what? We are out in the wilderness. We'll die if we don't find help soon." I said, feeling a slight tinge of regret. If we had died in there... it'd have been better than dying out here, being torn apart and turned into one of the things... the Pathogens.

"Why did they start killing people like that?" Isaac asked, ignoring my question.

"All I heard was that they found a... cult or something. An organization that was in our area. They weren't taking any risks, and so they started killing anyone in the area. Apparently, one of the cult members assassinated the Mayor last night." Romi said, holding her head low.

Even so, it wasn't fair or right to have tried to kill children or people who were innocent. While we ran out of our hometown, the bodies we had to step over, or past... they could have been innocents. What's the purpose of such purge instead of an organization?

We began walking again, stepping past trees, using them as cover when a Pathogen was walking by, hunting for its next meal. We passed through a desert, and could see something large in the distance. Pillars? Rocks? Neither one, but the things, did have windows.

"Welcome to..." he moved the sand off the sign and continued, "... the city of Rockington."

"A... city. No way!" Romi yelled, seemingly excited. "Why have such a place without fences?" She asked, stopping her yelling.

"It musta been here before the whole Pathogen thing started, whenever that was." he said.

And he wasn't really wrong. We never knew when it started, and it seemed like nobody did. Mr C. seemed to have some clue, since he would talk about what it was like before the apocalypse, as if he were reading it from a book.

I wonder if he survived.

We decided to check out the city, despite the danger it held.

We found small stores, large buildings, which we entered and looked around in. We found many rooms with computers, which seemed very unusable. Once on the top floor, we looked out into the distance and could see a road leading far away, a small settlement in the distance, with smoke coming out of it. We all looked at each other and smiled, we decided we'd head there once we found some things to bring with. Perhaps we could use the materials as a peace offering of sorts. Our town wasn't... well liked anyway.

"Well... is this enough?" Isaac asked, opening his backpack, the only backpack of ours to survive. Luckily, I had the journal lodged in there since mine was too full.

"I think so. With that much technology..." Romi said smiling.

We left the building and could hear some loud noises in the distance. Hooves? It was getting louder and louder and we quickly hid in the marketplace, we hid behind an aisle as it got louder and louder.

"You see anything, you kill it!" A man yelled, to which Isaac covered his mouth and Romi gasped.
