Nadia stayed at the warehouse till it was 7pm. She was very tired when she closed. She had not done supervising work before and for a first timer, she did really well. After she closed from work, she packed her bag and left the office. She already asked the other ladies to leave when their time was up for them to leave.
Most of the workers at the warehouse had left, while a few remained to work on a few stitches. She said goodbye to them, then left the premises. She happily walked down the road to the next junction where buses and taxis normally stopped to get customers. Walking alone was beginning to bore her, so, she picked out her phone from her bag then plugged in her earphones.
She put her earphones on and started scrolling through her phone. She picked the music she wanted to listen to, then started bobbing her head to the soft music playing in her ears.
She was engrossed in her music that she did not hear the car approaching her from the side of the road. The driver honked his horn beside her, making her jump a little. She took the earphones off her ears and was ready to pounce on the person who had scared her till she realised who it was. She was very shocked when she saw Kevin staring back at her.
"Kevin? Kevin, is that you?"
"Yes. God! Nadia. How long has it been? I haven't seen you in years. How have you been?" Kevin replied.
"Well, yes. It's been years. And by the way, I am fine. You?"
"I am well. Anyway, what are you doing here?" Kevin looked around.
"I work around. I was just on my way to the bus stop when you stopped me."
"Oh ok. Then how about me go and drop you at home?"
"You want to drop me at my house?" Nadia looked genuinely shocked that Kevin was willing to drop her at home. She did not even know what to say after that.
"Why are you still standing there? Come, let me go and drop you off."
Nadia was still shocked and could not move for a while. She was contemplating whether to accept his offer or not. When she finally did, she walked over to the passenger side of the car and sat beside Kevin, who was patiently waiting for her to make her decision.
"So, where am I taking you to?" he asked in a mocking tone.
"To Laterbiorkorshie. That is where I live. And it's a bit far from here. Are you sure you want to take me home?" Nadia asked again, just to be sure she was not dreaming.
"Of course I want to. Are we not friends anymore?"
"Well, it will depend. Since you were the one who cut all ties with me. Anyway, thank you for the ride," Nadia said and Kevin started the car.
Kevin drove down the road as Nadia gave him the directions to her place. After driving for about 30 minutes, they finally arrived at Nadia's house. Kevin was quite surprised with where they were. He had no idea about what had happened to Nadia's father and was genuinely surprised when they got to Nadia's new home.
"Erm, Nadia? Why are we here? Don't tell me this is where you live?"
"This is where I live, Kevin. A lot of things had happened after we graduated from high school. You know, it's nice seeing you again and thank you for the ride." She was about to get out of the car when Kevin held her wrist to stop her from getting down. Nadia frowned a bit at this.
"Nadia, can you please give me your contact? I want us to hang out some more like we used to. Then, that way, you can tell me more about what happened to you," Kevin offered, taking his hand away from Nadia's wrist.
"Sure. Give me your phone, then."
Kevin gave her his phone. "Password?" she waved the phone in front of him. "Oh, sorry." Kevin took the phone and opened the password then gave back the phone to Nadia.
"Okay, there. I saved it in my name so that you don't have to bother with that." She handed the phone back to Kevin.
"Thank you. Well, that means I will see you later, then?"
"Yeah, maybe when I am free. As I said, it was good seeing you again, Kevin. Take care," Nadia got down from the car and headed towards her house.
Kevin watched her quietly as she walked to her door, then drove off. Nadia opened her bag and fumbled with her bag, while looking for her keys. When she finally found it, she opened the door to her house and walked in. She removed her shoes, then placed them in the corner of the room beside the door. She walked tiredly inside and placed her bag on her chair. She lazily fell into the other chair while she laid back. She took in deep breath and slowly let it out to release the stress she was feeling. Then she suddenly remembered she had to call Akua, her best friend from high school.
"I wonder if she is even home," she said to herself and got up to get her phone from her bag. She dialled Akua's number then placed the phone to her hear.
After about three rings, her friend's voice could be heard at the other end of the line.
"Hey, Nadia. What's up?"
"Hey girl. Are you at work?"
"No, I am home. Why, what's going on? How did your first day go?" Akua asked her.
"It was pretty good. Actually, I did not know tell you who my new boss is?"
"Who?" Akua was very excited to know.
"It's Chantel. Do you remember her?"
"Chantel? Chantel? Wait a minute. Are you talking about the girl from Accra? The girl who came to our school on scholarship?"
"Yes. That very girl."
"Wait! Is she not staying at Canada? When did she come back?"
"Yeah. She came back some months ago. Wow, you should see her. She looks very different now. And she looks very beautiful and more mature. I thought she would not even give me the job, considering what happened between us in the past," Nadia commented.
"Really? Wow. So, how did you get the job then? What did she say to you? Tell me all about it," Akua squealed happily.
"Well, we talked a bit. Then, she offered me the job."
"Just like that?"
"Yeah, just like that. So, I am now the supervisor of her warehouse. I take care of the workers who are working on her designs," Nadia happily said.
"Supervisor? But I thought you wanted to be a fashion designer. I have seen your designs. They are very good. Did you show them to her?"
"Yes I showed some of it to her. She seemed to like them, but she said, she was not hiring fashion designers at the moment. But, I will try to show her the new ones I am working on. Maybe she would consider them," Nadia said.
"Yeah you should. But, anyway, I am happy you now have a job. At least this is better than nothing. Congratulations," Akua said. Even though Nadia could not see her, she knew she was smiling.
"Thank you," Nadia smiled.
