"Dinner's ready!" Qin's Mom knocked on Qin Guanglin's door, and after a moment, he came out of his room.
"You're always dawdling, never eager even for meals." Qin's Mom muttered as she placed the clean dishes and chopsticks on the table.
He Fang was bringing out the last dish and casually said, "Wash your hands first."
Qin Guanglin looked at Qin's Mom, then at He Fang, and inexplicably felt the scene was unusually harmonious.
"What are you spacing out for?" Seeing him dawdling, Qin's Mom got a bit annoyed. "After washing your hands, serve rice to He Fang."
Turning her head, He Fang was already by the pot with a bowl. Qin's Mom lightly slapped Qin Guanglin again before turning around, "Let me do it, let me do it. He Fang, you sit first."
"It's okay, you eat first." He Fang said, as she served a bowl and placed it at the head of the table.
"My appetite is small, so I eat…" Qin's Mom started to say but then saw the bowl was only half full of rice and swallowed the rest of her words.
She glanced at He Fang with a bit of surprise; her appetite was very stable, eating about the same amount every meal, at most just a few extra bites of vegetables, but never more rice.
He Fang served another heaping bowl of rice, caught Qin's Mom's gaze and paused for a moment, placing the rice on the table with a smile, "At home, I always serve the rice, it's a habit. You go ahead and eat, if it's not enough I'll serve more."
"It's enough, it's enough." Qin's Mom looked around, seeing everything was done, and sat down.
Qin Guanglin sat at the table after washing his hands, feeling a sense of unreality. Did He Fang blend in so seamlessly in just a few short hours?
Indeed, not simple, not only could she handle him skillfully, but she was also quite adept with his mom.
"The girl's cooking skills are excellent." Qin's Mom's eyes lit up after tasting the dish He Fang had prepared last. "This vegetarian trio is made by He Fang. Lin, you should eat more."
Qin Guanglin mumbled a couple of "mm-hmm" while eating his rice, with a sliver of crisis quietly emerging in his heart; did this woman have no flaws?
While having a capable girlfriend was a good thing, being dominated everywhere was not acceptable. He needed to find a way to turn the tables.
He Fang watched Qin Guanglin eat with a rice bowl in hand, her gaze seemingly never leaving him. Qin's Mom glanced at them subtly and then pondered while looking at her son.
Was this what they called "fool's fortune"?
Saying her son was foolish was a joke, of course, but she knew her son. This girl was outstanding in all respects so far, and it was evident that her son had gained an advantage.
Oh well, let's see how it goes, perhaps this foolish boy moved her with sincerity, confessing at home in broad daylight, tsk tsk…
"Girl, eat more, just like you're at home." Qin's Mom urged.
He Fang nodded, picking another small bite of vegetable and putting it in her mouth.
As for Qin Guanglin, though he was a bit sullen, he ate the meal deliciously; the heaping bowl of rice was quickly polished off. Just as he was about to get up and serve more, a small hand reached over from beside him.
Qin Guanglin tightly gripped the rice bowl, turning his head to look at He Fang, what was she up to?
"Let go." He Fang lifted her chopsticks, making a mock hitting gesture, smoothly taking the bowl and turning to serve more rice.
Still with questions in his head, Qin Guanglin hadn't spoken before Qin's Mom lightly slapped his back again.
"Serve it yourself." Qin's Mom mouthed, glaring at him.
He felt a bit wronged, he intended to serve his own, didn't he just have it taken away?
He Fang placed the freshly served rice in front of Qin Guanglin, then picked up her own bowl and continued to eat with small bites, looking very pleased.
Qin Guanglin looked at the heaping rice before him, then at He Fang.
As if I haven't served you before!
He took a couple bites, it really was delicious.
Due to He Fang's involvement, a bit too much food was prepared, and after they were all full, some was still left over. Qin's Mom put the leftovers with the most left in the refrigerator, and on turning around, found He Fang already carrying empty bowls into the kitchen.
"Girl, leave it, I'll do it, I'll do it." Qin's Mom said, her hands busy quickly grabbing the uncollected items from the table into the kitchen, "Go wash your hands and rest in Lin's room, I'll handle it."
Unable to resist Qin's Mom, He Fang had to leave the kitchen. Qin Guanglin was boiling water and said, "Go into the room, I'll bring the water in for you later."
He Fang didn't respond, slowly paced half a circle in the living room, stopped by the tarovine next to the TV, took a spray can, sprinkled some water, and got out a piece of yellowed soft cloth to wipe the tarovine leaves.
"We're out of dishwashing liquid, Lin, go buy a bottle from Uncle Pan's."
Qin Guanglin replied, said goodbye to He Fang, and went out to the nearby Uncle Pan's convenience store to buy dishwashing liquid.
"Qin brought his girlfriend home today?" Uncle Pan couldn't help but gossip upon seeing Qin Guanglin.
"Who told you that?" Qin Guanglin asked in surprise, turning around with the dishwashing liquid in hand.
"Hehe." Uncle Pan chuckled with pride, "Everyone saw it, you brought a girl home, then Aunt Xu went out and bought a whole bunch of groceries, isn't it obvious?"
Qin's Mom's last name was Xu. These two things were seen by the bored neighbors, quickly associated, and then with the powerful abilities of gossip and imagination, the facts were guessed out.
"Uncle Pan, I suggest you switch careers to a detective." Qin Guanglin pulled out his wallet, thought for a moment, and then grabbed a few lollipops from beside the counter, putting them next to the dishwashing liquid. "How much?"
"Thirteen and a half." Uncle Pan noticed the lollipops and chuckled again, "That girl was hanging around here a few days ago, and I was wondering who she was looking for, didn't think it'd be you."
"A few days ago?" Qin Guanglin was taken aback, "You must've seen wrong, today is the first time I brought her over."
"Tsk, you young folks always like hiding relationships. Here, your change is six and a half." Uncle Pan handed over the change, "Aren't you buying some other snacks?"
Qin Guanglin looked back, and Uncle Pan pointed to the shelf in the snacks area. "That one's popular, that one too, and that one, take some, cheer the girl up, drop by and I'll teach you some tricks when you have time."
"Your old tricks don't work anymore." Qin Guanglin turned around and grabbed the ones Uncle Pan pointed to, shop owners knew what snacks each group loved, that advice was fine to take from Uncle Pan.
"Besides, I don't need to cajole this one."
She laughed like a fool all day, not sure what there was to be so happy about.
"Doesn't matter if it's old or new, as long as it works." Uncle Pan counted change once more.
"All right, my mom's waiting for the dishwashing liquid. Gotta go, Uncle Pan."
These neighbors had everything good about them except for their mouths, which were like loudspeakers, so whenever someone got a good job or entered a relationship, once one person knew, everyone would know the next day.
"Buying dishwashing liquid took you so long." Qin's Mom muttered as she came out of the kitchen upon hearing the door open, stopping her complaints as she saw the bag of snacks Qin Guanglin brought.
"You've wised up, kid."
