Chapter 9 - One step at a time...

Isaiah

Day 0,10:57

I shielded Abby with my back as glass rained around us. The fog rolled around the ground like a demonic fog machine.

"Everyone run!" i yelled to crowd around us. Everyone scattered like roaches with the majority running down the hall.

"What the hell was-" Mr. Steele had come running from his class but collapsed in a heap a he stepped foot in the fog. I pushed Abby up the stairs trying to get away from the majority of the carnage. The fog seemed to follow us, as it seeped up stairs.

At this rate the whole school would be enveloped in a matter of minutes!

We bolted to my Chem classroom and slammed the door behind us we barged in. It had seemed that some others had the same idea as us because there were a few people already in here. I looked around for someone that i could trust.

"Taylin come here." I set my bag down and took out my tomahawks, clipping one to my belt and placing the other in Taylin's hands.

"If anyone in here falls down on the ground suddenly, cut them as deep as you can in the neck." He looked at it like I had given him a grenade with the pin pulled.

"B-but n-not everyone got back-"

"So you wanna risk getting your throat torn out like that girl did!?" I yelled at him bluntly. He shook his head. Without looking up from the axe he spoke.

"What are you gonna do?" I look at him not really knowing the answer myself. My lips move before my brain can even process what I'm saying.

"I'm gonna go see if i can help anyone else." I looked at Abby.

"I want you to stay here, ok?" she nodded with a worried look in her eye.

I walked to the door putting my hand on the handle. I took a deep breath and pushed it open. There's a barrage of screams of pain and fear as I step in to the hall giving the place an aura of terror.

"Just one step at a time." I say trying to calm myself. A flurry of emotions swirl through my brain.

Fear. Nervousness. Strangely excitement. And another emotion i didn't want to face yet.

Before i get even ten paces from the door a group of five freshmen and sophomores come running from around the corner.

"Its safe in here!" i yell rushing them inside the classroom i just came out of. As i was waiting for the threat they were running from i heard an extremely deep voice come from behind me.

"Lemme help." I look back, surprise written across my face.

"Markee? Don't we have math together?" He nodded. I looked back at the end of the hall to see five figures lumbering towards us. All of them seemed to be students, black liquid seeped out there mouths dripping on the floor.

Markee didn't have a weapon so i looked around to see what he could use. From behind the group students there was a red fire extinguisher box.

"See that fire extinguisher?" He nodded as he saw where i pointed. "ill distract them while you go around a grab it. If the door is locked then break the glass and open it from inside." I looked at the group closing in and finally made a move.

"Hey you ugly fucks! Over here!" I waved my arms around grabbing their attention. They walked towards me giving Markee an opening.

"Go!" i yelled as i swung my bat at the closest one to me. I hit the side of its head so hard the neck bent at an awkward angle.

Markee ran around the group and reached the box in a matter of seconds. He rattled the handle with no luck so he to used his elbow and shattered the glass. He unlocked the door and pulled out the red tube.

With a grin on my face i spoke across the hall. "You knock them down, ill keep it that way." Markee gave me a fearful look but took position.

"Come and get it you bastards." I say under my breath as i slowly approached the group. Markee ran up from behind and smacked one in the back of the head. The ding of the metal hitting skull gave me goose bumps. As a student lunged towards me i side stepped and swung at the base of his spine shattering three vertabre. Markee tripped one, breaking its shin. I took my bat and back swung at the last one standing caving in its chest. Even though ever last one of them were on the ground i continued to pummel in their skulls, crushing them into unidentified mush.

I sat back heaving in deep breaths as i surveyed the carnage, skull fragments were spread across the ground like fallen confetti.

The sight almost brought a smile to my face.

I looked back at Markee and saw that he was as far away from the mess as possible. Half of his body was hidden in the shadow of a classroom.

"We should see if anyone else needs our help." I walked over to him and glanced down the other hall.

See our school had a very open lay out so there wasn't any kind of maze like corridors. It was just a simple U shape with stairwells in the corners and the entrance at the base.

Down the hall I could see a group trying to get in a room, but i was to far away to tell how many.

"Ok, just... keep your distance ok? I don't wanna get hit by-"

Before he could continue a teacher jumped of from the dark class room and sunk its teeth in his arm. His dark skin was cut like a hot knife through butter.

I took my bat and plunged the top spike right through its eye damaging the brain. It fell limp on the ground.

Markee stared at his arm in shock. It had a black tint on the edges and was bleeding pretty bad. I quickly torn a clean piece of cloth from the teachers body and wrapped the wound tight. Markee still didn't move.

"Hey," i said slapping his face lightly. "You good?" his eyes refocused and he visibly swallowed.

"D-do you th-think that imma turn into one of them?" he asked in a low voice.

*Sigh* "Well the way that i see it is that we wont get affected by the thing that's in them because its already all around us." I gestured around us at the light fog blanketing the ground. "but if you start feeling hungry for brains just lemme know." His face paled a bit more as i patted his shoulder.

"Now lets go," i say walking down the hall towards the next group of 'students' "Betty's hungry." I add under my breath.
