Even though I wanted to give Jack and Jill a test run my intuition was telling me this forest would not be as safe during the night and I could see that the sun had already began setting. It didn't take me too long to find the path back to town, and I followed it for two hour and by this point nightfall had already come.
The town of Danafall was more or less a merchant/hunter hub, the town was run by the Mayor, Lord Antonio II and to no surprise he was a distant cousin of the King. Being the second largest city it saw much traffic from those who wished to sell their wares, everything could be found here from a pin to an anchor.
The town had 3 major means of acquiring goods/services, the first was with coins, for the right price anything could be bought. Next their was bartering, if needs be one could trade something of theirs for something else in the marketplace rather that paying. And finally thier was paying with prestige, because of the constant threat of monster attacks people try to get on the good side of strong hunters/knights.
There were ranking systems amongst the knights and hunters so the higher your generally the greater your power and people often try to buy the favors of these strong people in an attempt to get on thier good side, so that if they were in danger the person of interest would be more inclined to assist. This was was the most subjective because the whole prestige system didn't work with every seller and sometimes they just don't care enough to give it away for free.
In order to enter the town you will need some form of identification, either a hunter license, a knight creast, mages association scroll of leagance or a merchant license. You may be able to enter the city anyhow if you get an easy going gaurd but it would raise alot if suspicion unnecessarily.
"God damn" I though to myself, this knowledge book really was amazing. I only asked who ran Danafall and it had given me all this additive information. It would be a great resource in the future if I every found myself in a more lucrative line of work and needed information.
Infiltration was one of the many techniques I learned as a soldier, it was a staple during assassination mission and I was quite proficient at it. Assassination to me always felt a little underhanded and maybe even boring. Unlike a warzone it is all about patience and stealth while on the battle field it was the more skilled warrior who would win. But just because I disliked it doesn't mean I don't understand it's effectiveness.
Plus knowing the art of assassination can be very useful if avoiding getting assassinated yourself by someone else. I watched the gaurds from outside the wall for a while before I got an understanding of how they operated and once I did I was able to slip through the gate mid shift rotation.
These gaurds almost made it too easy, they were neglectful and were more interested in playing cards that doing their rotations properly. I just had to walts through at the right time and they didn't even bother trying to stop me, in fact I doubt they even noticed me whatsoever.
[New skill used, assassination arts : not compatible with class Gun Slinger: error : error resolved, granting permanent passive skill Stealth].
As I got out of the vicinity of the gaurds, I flipped open my book and inquired about the closest inn.
The closest inn is the dew drop in, 1.2 km away. Ran by Carl, not a nobel or a knight so he has no last name. His inn charges 1 bronze and 1 copper per night and if you would like a meal that would 1 bronze and 4 copper a night. They sell detestable alcohol, the price ranges and they also sell mediocre health potions for 1silver. Relatively close to the hunters guild so they have frequent and unsavory guests.
The book had stuck again answering all his questions, even the ones he had not even thought about asking. Shawn returned the book to his dimensional cloak before pulling out a knive to activate his stealth ability to draw as little attention to himself as possible. Right now it was a little after midnight and Shawn was feeling rightfully fatigued. He had been running around the forest for hours nonstop and he had also been fighting bears who were not exactly light work, but that wasn't the only reason.
His instincts were telling him he was being watched and by this point he had learned to trust his instincts over anything else. He reached the Dew drop inn and pushed in the door, revealing a lively seen inside. There were men in the back slugging it out while others were passed out from intoxication and without a shadow of a doubt they had be robbed long ago. Only two people noticed Shawn's entrance into the building, a woman at the back of the room all away from all the action and the other was the man in charge of the inn/tavern.
Carl sat there staring at the scene in front of him from behind the serving counter. Scenes like this had become a custom of the Dew drop, in fact the bar was know for it's unruly crowd so much so that people came from across the town just to see the brawls unfold first hand. Carl was an pretty young ex-hunter how got injured on a mission posted by a noble, the job took it's toll on Carl but the pay was so good that he was able to open up this tavern and retire as a hunter.
The injury was from a potent poison curse that feeds on the targets mana and poison thier body, the only way to stop the poison was to use a talisman to seal his own mana and stop the poison from feeding off of it. As Carl was shining the counter he was standing at he felt a shiver run down his spine, he could feel his blood turn I cold as large beads of sweat rolled of his forhead.
He knew this feeling, it happen whenever he was in the presence of someone with a surplus of mana. This mana radiating of this unknown person was overloading the talisman, it would not break the talisman but it would cause some level of discomfort. The tavern door was pushed in and an unknown figure stepped inside.
The figure wore a black cloak covering all of his body, with a hood shrouding his face. If not for his malfunctioning talisman he still would have know this man was dangerous just from the way he walked it showed he was ready to fly into battle at any moment.
"What can I do for you traveler" asked Carl as the man approached.
"I would like a room and a meal" replied Shawn as he looked at Carl assessing his power.
[Carl : lvl 26 : 50exp], strange Shawn mumbled as he wondered why Carls exp was so low considering how high his level was. Carl quickly collected the strangers money and handed a room key to Shawn hoping he would not linger. He got a very ominous feel as he looked at the man, all he could see behind the hood were a pair a deep purple eyes that seemed like they were about to consume him.
Shawn left immediately and retired to bed, extremely fatigued from his adventure during the day. After he reached his room he hopped into the bed and passed out but not before he propped a chair behind the door so it would fall if the door was ever opened.
The girl at the back watched as the hooded figure disappeared into the back. She could tell that his person was not to be toyed with, she was mage who had a very unique ability to see mana. Normally a mage once they reach a certain level would be able to feel the mana in the air but she could actually see and quantify in. The man that just walked in had the most mana reserves she has ever seen in a human.
In fact she was almost a 100% sure his person was not human, the way his mana flowed seemed to have an Eiljeen (Elf) feel to it and different at the sametime but that was probably just her imaging things because she didn't know of any non-high elves with that much mana reserves but still an elven mage would not let all his mana continually seep from his body like that with no control or purpose.
This mana flow was crude and wild but more importantly it was ominous, nothing like the elves she had ever met, not only that but elves were prideful and had very little respect for the humans greedy search of power and materialistic lifestyle. An elf would not be caught dead walking around in a back water tavern like this, but none the less this being was quite intriguing and her inner mage took over, she had to learn of who this person was and most of all she had to test his power.
The lady then removed a pouch from her clock and approached the rowdy group at the back of the with a beautiful proposal for them, one that they could not refuse.
