Chereads / Gun Slinger / Chapter 6 - D Rank

Chapter 6 - D Rank

Shawn rolled out of bed and brushed the lint off his cloak. I have a lot to do today so let's get started right away he thought to himself. Shawn left his room and headed downstairs where he purchased a plate of food from Carl.

Today Carl was serving wild silverfish and loaf, Shawn gulped down the food before heading out on the town. Carl still could not get a pulse on the unknown figure, the man didn't say or do anything out of ordinary he was quite and kept to himself.

That's what scared Carl the most he couldn't figure out what exactly was going on in that man's head. As Shawn left the tavern a group of 11 men walked out following him down the street, just far enough behind so Shawn would be unable to find them but their tracker would be able to keep tabs on him.

As Shawn left the tavern he headed towards the hunters guild, before he is able to do anything in this town he needs some form of identification and according to the book the hunters guild was the group with the lowest joining requirement. All you needed to do was perform a physical test to show that you could fight monsters and you needed to do a minimum of 5 E rank missions a month to keep you license.

And if needs be you can be drafted to defend the nobles if knights were spread too thinly during war efforts. As Shawn entered the guild he noticed that the place was full of people wearing all sorts of armor and weapons, and these metals were all materials for weapons he could build.

He wanted nothing more than to get his hands on all the materials but the levels and the vast number of people who seemed to be in a squad stopped him. He knew he was strong but these hunter's levels were so high that he could not even imagine how powerful they were.

The stronger ones noticed his power as well just from his deep and suppressive mana it was clear he was dangerous and they could tell that this was just a mere fraction of it. Shawn made his way to the desk and pressed the bell that was sitting on the counter.

A lady walked from a room behind the counter and greeted Shawn. "Hello, how may I help you today" asked the lady.

"I would like to apply for a hunter license" replied Shawn as he tried to inspect the lady but to his surprise he only got question marks, the same thing that happened when he looked at some of the stronger people in here.

It seemed like they were either suppressing or hiding thier power but he chose not to linger on that thought since there was not really much he could do about that. "Sure not a problem, just walk down that hallway right there and enter the room at the end. I'll go get the guild master who will administer the test" she said with a smile as she pointed down a hallway that was not their before. Shawn thanked the lady before heading towards the hall way.

As Shawn entered the hallway a strange tingling sensation flashed throughout his body. Shawn shook off the feeling and took a step forward but as he did the corridor seemed to elongate slightly. "What the hell" Shawn though, he definitely saw the corridor extent, this time he sprinted forward and as he did the corridor stretched even further than before.

Shawn then spun around thinking maybe he was imagining it but behind him there was only more corridor extending indefinitely. [Mental attack detected : mental resistance maxed out : resistance not enough : advice expel magic by overpowering it with your own].

As soon as Shawn saw the notification he released all the mana he had been storing. The sheer pressure and ferocity of this wild mana began slamming against the corridor wall, his mana was like a tsunami crashing against the walls endlessly and only a few seconds after the onslaught the walls around him began to crack and not long after they shattered falling to the ground revealing a white room all around him and in front of him were too people a man and the woman from earlier kneeling on the floor panting.

Shawn was confused but he was absolutely sure that it was these two who had attacked him, he intensified the onslaught of his mana but the man showed no reaction, the woman on other had was nolonger on her knees she was flat on the ground unable to move.

[New Skill Unlocked : Mana suppression : Weaponize your mana and use it to attack those nearby indiscriminately]

"Okay, enough you have beaten her and it would be a real shame if you killed my secretary after you asked her to administer you this test". Shawn then cut his mana flow completely and apologized for attacking her back.

"That is not a problem, we wanted to see how strong your mental fortitude was as well as how you would react when it a situation were you were in the dark completely and you passed with flying colors. Now we just need to see your combat ability and then we can issue your liscenes" replied the man as he waved his arm causing six dummies to appear.

"Just incapacitate them however you feel and then you pass, you have a few forms to sign and we need some other administrative information but we can deal with it after" said the man as he got out of the way of the dummies, who then began charging Shawn.

Three dummies ran towards Shawn while three hung back and readied their bows to fire. Shawn grabbed Cro-Van from his cloak and met the dummies in the middle. He bagan by ramming the knife through the chest of the closet dummy and as he did the other dummy got behind him and attempted to grab him but Shawn counted by throwing his left foot backwards kicking the dummy straight in the chest causing him to fly backwards a few feet and that kick was followed by Cro-Van being thrown straight into it's skull.

Shawn took on the next clone bear handed striking before the dummy could even react with a flurry of attacks beating it with ease. Shawn then ran towards when he had thrown Cro-Van and as he reached down an arrow flew through the air which he easily caught followed by two more which he was forced to dodge.

"Never start something you know you cannot finish" Shawn yelled at the dummies, three deafening burst rang through the air and the heads of the dummies exploded, their bodies fell to the ground and puffed away in a cloud of smoke.

The master was slightly confused and intrigued, he had no idea what just happened, he had never seen magic like this before. He saw the projectiles as they flew through that air but the didn't exactly understand what it was. This man was clearly very skilled, he was quite proficient in hand to hand combat as well as ranged magic.

Not only that but he had a surplus of mana, it was clear from how he used pure force to break out of the illusion that he had only a basic understanding of mana but still he was quite spectacular excelling in almost every area. It is said that a prodigy only appears once every few centuries but talent like this even among the inhumans happen only once every millenia.

The guild master wanted nothing more than to beg the unknown man to be his disciple infact he would have even been willing to pay him but he felt like money would not have motivated this man whatsoever. If he wanted this student he would have to be creative, this person was quite young maybe a woman would get him to follow me. The guild master stood their scheming on how to get the man to join him but his concentration was broken by the man now approaching him.

"That was a remarkable showing, what type of magic was that" asked the guild master as he stared at the odd shaped metal in the man's hand.

"I'm not sure of the name of the magic, but I learned it from a book I found in an abandoned temple. Go ahead why don't you give it a try" replies Shawn as he handed one of the guns to the master wanting to see if others besides himself would be able to use the gun.

"Just point and squeeze". As the master took the gun a cold shiver ran down his spine, he could tell that this was an instrument of death. The master pulled the trigger and shot at the wall making a small bearly visible hole.

The firing took no mana from him whatsoever, he initially thought that maybe mana was used to propel the bullet but he was wrong there was some other mechanism causing the projectile to be fired forward. As intrigued as he was he nolonger wanted to be in possession of the weapon not many things could scare him but this was one of them and he felt like just by holding it he was in danger.

The man handed back the weapon and introduced himself as Nicholas Silver and then began the interviewing process asking Shawn general questions, all of which Shawn lied about except for his name and species. Nicholas was a bit surprised that a dark elf, a creature that only existed in Elven legends was just walking around town.

They were were supposedly the peak of elven power but they were unencumbered by needless emotions that would deter them from achieve thier goal and it also explained his great mana reserves because they are said to have greater mana reserve that even the demons. But he had never seen them even the high-elves who Nicholas had to meet a few times were not even sure of the dark elves existence and the ones that new something all refused to even acknowledge Nicholas after he mentioned the dark elves.

After years of searching he uncovered nothing, not even an iota of evidence until now when there was one standing infront of him. Now he absolutely had to get Shawn to become his disciple.

The interview lasted for about 3 hours, Nicholas told Shawn of the ins and outs of being a hunter as well as all the requirements. Even though Shawn was clearly powerful Nicholas could not advance his rank beyond D until he completed atleast 5 E rank and 5 D rank bounties. Nicholas had also asked him to become his disciple but Shawn was not exactly keen on having a boss to tell him what to do but Nicholas would not take no for and answer and managed to persuade Shawn to just come and take a look at his training hall where he mentored all types of young warriors.

As Shawn left the Guild hall he took 5 E & D rank bounties and left heading towards the edge of the town.
