Chapter 39 - 18 Years Ago

Macy's sister Lilith was six years younger than Macy. Lilith always used to imitate Macy-- let it be the way to talk, walk, anything, she always imitated Macy.

She also wanted to become an exorcist like Macy. Years later, when she was fifteen, she enrolled in the exorcist high school. She made friends, got an exorcist badge, went on missions, and did everything an exorcist would do.

During the last year of high school, when she was eighteen, she went on a mission with her friends, and she got infected during the fight.

At that time, there was no remedy for the infection. If any human got infected, they would die, and if any exorcist got infected, then they had to cut the part of the body where they were infected; if not, then the infection would spread in the entire body, and that person would become an impurity.

'In other words, if the infection is spread in the entire body, the other exorcists would kill them?' Luka thought to himself.

When Lilith got infected, she was with her friends. The infection had already spread in her entire body, It was too late, and there was no saving her.

Her own friends would have killed her.

"So she ran away," Macy added.

"I would have done the same thing" Luka leaned back to the chair and clicked his tongue. 'Getting killed by her own friends? That's the worst.'

"My father… your grandfather, he formed a search party to look for her, and I was in one of the parties too." Macy said as she smiled a little, "That's where I met your dad."

"Old man?"

"Yeah."

The search continued for a year, but they couldn't find Lilith. Some assumed that she was already dead, while some believed that she turned into impurity and some exorcists might have killed her.

"It was all my fault," Macy bit her lip and blamed herself. "If I had paid more attention to her then..." she stopped.

"It wasn't your fault, mom."

"Your father said the same thing. He comforted me that time, then we spent much time looking for my sister, and I eventually fell in love with him."

'Just like that?' Luka wondered.

"Soon after, we decided to get married."

'Isn't that way too quick?'

"We took permission from my parents and set our marriage date but… the demon apocalypse."

The demon apocalypse happened 18 years ago. Millions of monsters, demons, and impurities had invaded this city.

"It happened on our marriage day," Macy took a deep breath and continued, "Your father had to go-- I also wanted to go with him, but he didn't let me, and then three days later, he came with a newborn boy in his hands."

"Me?"

"Yeah, it was you" Macy smiled at Luka. "At first, I was suspicious of him. I was thinking, 'What if he was having an affair with someone?'. But that misunderstanding was cleared soon."

"Then you got married?" Luka asked curiously.

"Yeah, and we decided to raise you together. Time passed, and Lilith was born, so we named her after my sister."

'So in the end, they couldn't find her sister?' Luka wanted to ask that, but he couldn't.

"I can't imagine you being suspicious of dad," Luka teased, though he had no idea he just called his father 'dad' instead of 'old man' right now.

"A girl in love has the right to get suspicious of the person she loves."

"Is that so?"

"Yeah," Macy nodded, "And I am sure Ana feels the same, so make sure you don't get overly familiar with other girls."

"Of course," Luka replied with a confident look on his face, then added 'I already am.'

"But it's a shame," Macy said.

"What do you mean?"

"I wanted you to marry Lily."

"Is your head alright?" Luka asked with a straight face.

"Did I say something wrong?"

"Yeah, you did," Luka nodded then said, "You want me to marry my own sister?"

"You are not blood-related, so it's okay."

"It's not okay! I see her as my sister."

"I know that, "She grinned and stood up. "I was half-kidding."

'Only half?!'

"If you say stuff like that, then my confidence of being her brother would break."

"Oh?!" Macy raised her eyebrows, "You never acted like a 'brother' for her, and now you want to be her brother?"

"Nothing will happen between her and me."

"But what if she says she wants to marry you?"

"I won't! Even if she says, I won't."

"She will marry someone else then." Macy shrugged her shoulders as she walked to Luka.

"I don't… care," he stuttered.

'I am super pissed for some reason. Just by imagining her getting married to someone else makes my blood boil. I don't want that… huh? Wait!" Luka remembered a familiar feeling.

'It's not like what I am thinking, right? It's impossible! I only see her as my sister)

"Have you changed your mind yet?" Macy teased after watching Luka's reaction.

"I haven't. It's just…" Luka thought of an excuse. "Yeah! There is some still time before she gets married, and she won't get married for the next 30--no, 40 years!"

"Who knows? Maybe she already has a boyfriend?" Macy was enjoying Luka's reactions.

"It's impossible! There is no way!" Luka couldn't be more obvious.

'If she has one, I will kill him.' He forgot that he was an exorcist who helps people.

Macy chuckled and patted Luka's head as she said with a grin on her face, "You can be cute sometimes."

"Come on! Not you too."

Macy grabbed the plates and went to the kitchen.

Luka recalled what happened today, and it was still hard for him to believe all that.

"Mom, how is grandpa doing?"

"He is fine."

"I see."

Luka took a deep breath and closed his eyes as if he was preparing himself to ask something.

"He was missing you, you know?" Macy said.

Luka opened his eyes and uttered, "I am ashamed to show my face to him."

"Don't say that. It doesn't matter… you are his grandson."

"It does matter, "Luka clenched his fist and said in a solemn voice, "He is the leader of the exorcist council after all."
