"The sound, of a heart monitor again." Eva thought as she slowly opened her eyes. Though the last time she had awoken to something like this, it was in a bright and ordinary hospital room. But this time, it was a dark and dismal sort of place. "Hello?" Eva called quietly. She slowly tried to get up—feeling a bit disorientated. "Hello-Huh?" Eva said as she realized she couldn't get out of the hospital bed—for she was strapped down tight. "H-hey! What's going on? Get me out!" Eva began to panic. She squirmed and tried to break free, but to no avail. "Help!" Suddenly, a door cracked open. It was the Doctor. "Oh, hello Eva. I see you've finally come to." He said as he walked over to her bedside. "Why am I strapped down like this? W-what's going on?!" Where's Mom and Dad?" "Eva." The Doctor said solemnly. "They have all died." Eva's heart utterly sank and despair began to overcome her. "You may have forgotten, but you were in a plane crash. Somehow, you survived. But, you were the only one that did." Suddenly, Eva remembered Leo being in that white, misty place and saying goodbye to her. She finally remembered everything. "N-no…No. No!" Eva began to scream and cry out. "I'm sorry, Eva. I know this must be a very difficult time for you. I'll release you once you've calmed down." The Doctor said as he walked away. Eva let out a loud scream and then she wept.
Then, after some time she whispered as tears streamed down her face, "Mom…Dad…They're all…gone. I'm all alone now." Suddenly, a thought came to her. "I suppose, Kiersten….and Lisa are still alive. Maybe—I still have them." She said as she tried to let reality sink in. "I…" Suddenly, she fainted. Eva began to dream. A vision so vivid—one could swear it was real life. The vision was so disturbing that, suddenly, Eva began to hyperventilate. Her heart monitor went wild; an alarm sounded and the nurses rushed in. "What's going on?" The Doctor asked as he barged in. "It looks as if she's going into a seizure, Sir." "Well, stabilize her!" They injected her with all sorts of medications until her body was finally at rest. "This is going to be a problem." The Doctor thought.
A couple of months went by and Eva was mute. Not by some medical complication, but by choice. For depression has taken over her to such an extent that she lost all hope. As she was served lunch at her hospital bed, she refused to touch it. "Dear, you have to eat something." The nurse said. Eva said nothing as she stared emotionlessly at the wall. "You know that if you don't, we'll have to force-feed you." "Just let me die." Eva said darkly.
"Eva! It looks like you have some visitors!" A nurse said enthusiastically as she opened the door for them. It was Lisa and Kiersten. "Y-you guys…" "Eva!" They exclaimed as they rushed in to hug her. They began to cry. "I'm so sorry this happened, Eva!" Lisa cried. For the first time in a while, Eva felt happiness; and hope. "We're never going to leave you!" Kiersten added. "You guys are…the best friends…I ever had." Eva said weakly. They just embraced each other for the longest time until a nurse interrupted. "Do you girls think you can get Eva to eat?" "Why? What's wrong? Is she sick?" Kiersten asked her. "No, she just became depressed after her admission. If you can't, then we'll have to force feed her again." "That won't be necessary; I think we can handle this." Kiersten said boldly. "Very well." The nurse smiled as she went on her way. "You 'are' going to eat, aren't you?" Kiersten asked nervously. Eva just smiled. "Yeah, now that you guys are here." The nurse came back in with lunch for Kiersten and Lisa and brought lunch for Eva when she found out she was willing to eat.
They ate quietly for a while until Eva finally said, "You guys, I had a dream about Leo." Kiersten and Lisa looked at each other sadly. "I'm sure." Kiersten said. "We miss him too." Lisa added. "You don't understand; it was a message." Kiersten paused, then said, "Look. At this point, I believe you." "Y-you do?" "Yes. Maybe not after the roller coaster accident; but this..." "Eva, there was no way you should have survived!" Lisa interrupted. "We believe Leo saved you." Kiersten added. Eva cried tears of joy; for she finally felt understood. "What could Leo be? An angel?" Lisa wondered aloud. "Maybe. Eva did say that he sprouted wings the first time he saved her." Kiersten said. "Maybe. Because, he told me that he's still with us." Eva said hopefully. "Really? Where?" Lisa asked. "He—said that he couldn't be with us anymore, personally. But rather, he told us to look for signs that he was there." "Like clues?" Lisa asked. "Yes. He said that we would need that assurance because the world is ending." Kiersten and Lisa gasped. "That's crazy." Kiersten said. "What do you mean?" Asked Eva. "Eva, the world actually is in trouble. I don't know if it's ending, per se. But, there's a very serious food shortage going on right now." Lisa said. "Maybe…" Kiersten paused. "Maybe Leo is our Guardian Angel! Maybe he came to us to save the world from famine!" Kiersten wondered enthusiastically. "Wow Kiersten, I never thought I'd hear you say anything like that." Lisa giggled. "Well, I have!" Kiersten smiled proudly. "I agree, since he said it was up to us to save it. Then, he showed me an apocalyptic nightmare. The whole world was a wasteland. Everyone was tearing each other apart…until there was nothing left." Eva said mournfully. "Whoa." Kiersten said quietly. "Then, we gotta stick together and do what we can!" Lisa exclaimed.
"Hey Eva, when do you get to get out of here anyways?" Kiersten asked. "Well, until I get better-" "You're better. Nurse!" Kiersten called. Within the hour, Eva was released from the hospital. "Eva, you're staying at my place." Kiersten said bluntly as they were walking out of the hospital. "Oh-are you sure?" "Of course! I already asked my parents and they emphatically agreed that you should stay." "Th-thank you…" Eva said gratefully. "We're going to get through this." Lisa said. "Yeah, no matter what it takes!" Kiersten added. Eva smiled. Though she was still completely heart broken; she finally felt like she wasn't alone anymore.
