Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Knives

I was about to put the book on the side table when the door was swung open, making me freeze. It was my mom. She spoke, being shocked at the sight of Penelope.

"So it's true. She really is alive."

"Yeah." I looked at Penelope, who was snuggling against the armrest.

"Wow, I can't believe it after all these years. I feel so bad that we did that to her when she was a child."

"I mean don't apologize to me." I nudged Penelope trying to wake her up. She pushed my arm away lightly. She mumbled something but it was inaudible. "Well Maybe you can tell her later."

"She's so cute when she sleeps."

"Yeah I know rig- Wait, What?!?"

"Oooooooo" my Mom teased me.

"Aaah go away!"My yelling disturbed Penelope.

"Be quiet." She mumbled in her sleep as she positioned herself to lay on my lap. I was immediately embarrassed.

"Aww you guys are so cute!" My Mom squealed.

"No we are not! Go away, Mom!"

"Ok, I'll leave you guys alone." She smirked and walked out the door.

"No! That's not- ugh." She can be so annoying sometimes. I looked down at Penelope peacefully sleeping. How could the Sampsons not want her? She's just precious. I smiled unconsciously.

(Cole's Mom's P.O.V.)

I walked out of his room feeling satisfied with my teasing. I ran into my husband in the hall.

"Oh hey sweetie. Where are you going?" I asked.

"To Cole's room. I need to talk to him."

"Is it about Penelope?"

"Yes."

"I was afraid you'd say that."

"He has to marry a pure breed. Penelope isn't even close to being a pure breed. I mean her fur is all out of whack and she's got crazy eyes. I don't like them getting close."

"Robert! You sound so harsh! I thought you said you were trying to ease up on Cole! Besides, that isn't what makes him happy most important! Not some stupid rule about the royal family having to be pure breeds!" I yelled at his face. He shouldn't have said that about Penelope even if it was true.

"What, Babe? I'm just saying."

"I want you to just consider people's feelings. Once they're broken they can't be built back by someone else so easily." I patted him on the shoulder as I passed him.

(Penelope's P.O.V.)

I woke up finding myself, laying on Coles lap. A habit I had because Allison let me lay on her lap. I'm glad he didn't mind. His eyes were shut and his breathing steady. I don't know how long I had been sleeping but I guess long enough for him to fall asleep as well. My eyes traveled around the room. I spotted a case that was filled with trophies and medals. He must be pretty talented. Below the trophy case was another case but this one was filled with knives and bows. Woe, I love knives. I slowly got up from the chair trying not to disturb Cole. I walked up to the case and opened it. I took out one of the knives. The blade was about four inches long and the handle was decorated with an intricate design. Holding it and feeling it's weight in my hands reminded me of my training days.

Flashback:

I flung the knife through the air. It spun and hit the target right in the middle.

"Bullseye!!!" I announced being proud of my 20th bullseye in a row.

"Good job, Penelope! Now you go Allison." Her dad commanded. We always had private lessons with him instead of with everyone else because he was the alpha and the alpha's descendents were treated with more concentrated training. Although I was not one of his descendents, I trained with them because I was adopted by his family.

She flung her knife towards the target. It looked a little wobbly flying through the air. It hit the outer white line. She sighed at her failure.

"That's ok sweetheart. You'll get it next time." He reassured her.

"I'm done with this! It's too hard and I just suck while Penelope is like the best at it!" She always got mad during training because I was better with knives and in combat.

Present~

I spun the knife between my fingers watching the light reflect off the medal from different angles. Suddenly I heard movement behind me. I did the first thing that my instincts told me to. I turned around flinging the knife towards where the sound had come from. Just like I did in my training from years ago. It hit the wall and I notice a shocked Cole that had moved out of the way of where the blade had struck the wall. Good thing I didn't hit him.

"Wow, you have great reflexes." His face naturalized as he pulled the knife out of the wall.

"I'm guessing you have experience with knives?" He questioned spinning the knife between his fingers and walking towards me.

"Yeah, sorry about that."

"It's fine. I honestly didn't expect it from a girl that's all."

"Allison is the daughter of our pack's alpha so when she was trained her dad decided to train me as well since I was technically part of their family at that point. I mean they were the ones that found me."

"He taught you well then."

"Nah, I just pick up things quickly. Allison not so much." I chuckled.

Cole reaches behind me putting the knife back in its spot. He didn't realize how close he was getting to me. Too close. When he turned his face away from the knife and back to me, our noses touched. I could immediately feel my face burn up. At this point we were practically breathing the same air. A smile grew on his face.

"Your eyes are even more beautiful up close." He commented.

"W- wha-"

I looked straight into his green eyes as he stared back into my eyes. The more we stood there the more I felt my breath being taken away. The door slammed open.

"Cole, I can't find my arrows- Oh. My. God." Caroline looked at us as we both turned our heads towards her.

"AAAAHHHHH THIS IS SOOOO CUTE. YOU GUYS ARE OMG. I HAVE WITNESSED THE MOST AMAZING THING!!!!!"

I was so flustered I couldn't move. Cole moved away from me and pushed Caroline out of the room and closed the door, making sure to lock it this time. He started to walk back towards me. As he got closer I took a step back, bumping into the wall. Oh no. I trapped myself.

"Are you scared of me?" He questioned looking worried. He turned in a different direction and plopped onto his bed. My breathing was still uncontrolled.

"N-no." I replied. He slightly chuckled.

"Then why are you stuttering? Hm?"

Probably because you've gotten me all flustered! I screamed internally. I heard rain start to pour outside.

"Rain! Oh my gosh! I love rain! Let's go!" I pulled his wrist making him stand and ran down the hallway.

"Wait, where are you going?" He started to panic.

"Look who's scared now." I laughed.

(Cole's P.O.V.)

This crazy lady is dragging me through the hallway. I have no idea where she is taking me. The last thing she mentioned was rain.... oh no. She swung the front door open and ran out into the rain holding her arms out. She was soaked within seconds. She laughed and squealed as she splashed in puddles while I just stood there in the doorway nice and dry.

"Are you coming or what?" She looked at me pouting. "The rain doesn't hurt ya know." I just sat there staring at her pouting. "Come on, Mittens!"

"What did you just call me!?!?!"

"Mittens?" She muttered nervously realizing how mad I was getting.
