I couldn't believe what had happened today, Scarlet was a nightmare. She found a way to make the whole school hate me more openly, and they knew about my condition now. Witches were cruel when someone is different, ironically enough.
"Del, don't worry about all that stuff. She's a cunt." I was brought out of my thoughts by Mac who was walking home with me, he smiled when I looked at him.
"Why do you call me that? It's not like my name is long. Just call me Owen." I told him scrunching my nose. No one else had a nickname for me, there wasn't really a point.
"I want my own fun little thing to call you. Your last name is Delgado so Del it is." He stated. I shook my head and rubbed my shoulder. The clean up had been a nightmare, all the plastic had hardened to the floor and when Mac tried to melt it again it just got messier.
"I'm sorry that you had to clean up my mess, I shouldn't have used magic. I could've just decked her." Mac apologized, "And your parents have to pay for my damages." I shrugged.
"I would rather my parents pay than yours." Mac rolled his eyes.
"I just don't understand why she is out to get me like that. I mean I heard demons were mean but for no reason like that?" I furrowed my brows, it didn't make sense. Why would she pick a fight with the one she has to stay with, she did say she thought I was weak but why?
"Doesn't matter the reason, she's out of line. What I don't understand is why the principle is always out to get you. I should've known he would blame you. He always tries to get you in trouble with your dad." I shrugged again, nothing about today made sense and I wasn't excited to get home. My dad had been so mad on the phone, he was coming straight home to punish me. My mom was the one who came in and she had looked so disappointed. I hated when she looked at me with her disappointed eyes, it made me think of my brother. What would he have done today? It was hard to tell, since he was only three when he died. I stopped and stared at my house, it was late already since it had taken us hours to clean the cafeteria. I took a shaky breath.
"I'm sorry dude, I tried talking to your mom. She wouldn't listen." I nodded my head.
"It's alright, what's the worst that can happen right?" Mac looked at me with pity before starting on his way to his house. I walked up the porch and reached for the knob with a shaky hand. I had never been in trouble like this before, the last time my parents had been this upset was when my brother had died. I looked where Mac had gone and debated just running after him but turned the knob anyway. I couldn't run forever.
"It's about time. I thought I told you to come right home after detention?" My dads voice sounded out, he was sitting on the couch waiting for me. Scarlet was in the chair looking upset, very convincingly.
"I did, cleaning up took a long time." I stared at the floor, not wanting to see the look on my dads face. I could hear my moms footsteps enter the room but she said nothing.
"Look at me when I'm talking to you." My dads voice was even toned, scary. I stopped breathing and looked up to meet his eyes. He was absolutely furious.
"You started a fight, had Mac attack Scarlet who can't defend herself against magic, and destroyed the cafeteria. What if Mac had seriously burned her? She was entrusted to us by the king and the first day she shadows you, you try to injure her. What is going on with you?" So this was the story that was told to him, I was speechless. I had no idea what to say, he looked so angry.
"Go change." He growled at me. I must've looked confused because he repeated himself. "Owen. You have two minutes. Go change." I slowly walked away to my room, quickly changing into comfortable clothing. I had no idea what I was changing for much less what I was supposed to be changing into. When I entered the living room again, Scarlet was also changed. My dad walked out of the house and I followed, we all got into his truck. I had been demoted to backseat, I was very confused on what was going on. We drove to a dirt road that was more rocks than dirt and ended up in a field. The truck halted to a stop.
"Get out." I looked at my dad confused but listened. Scarlet hopped out of the front seat with my dad and they started walking towards the middle of the field.
"What are we-" I tried asking.
"We are training. Right now. This is your punishment."
"Training...is my punishment?" I asked, it seemed more of a reward.
"You'll train till you collapse." I already felt as if I would collapse. "Get into a fighting stance, you'll start off by sparing me." I looked at my dad in disbelief.
"This isn't fair. I haven't learned how to use my magic yet. Getting it to work could take weeks by itself." I argued, I wouldn't win against a knight.
"You should have thought about that before attacking Scarlet." I looked over at Scarlet who was smiling. I was knocked off my feet when lightning struck 3 feet from where I was standing. I looked at my dad in shock from my place on the ground.
"First rule, Never look away from the enemy. Now get up." I scrambled to my feet and took a fighting stance. My dad charged me, and I sidestepped only to step into a fog too thick to see in. I turned in circles, trying to find where my dad was. I was again knocked to the ground by a lightning strike not far from where I was standing. The fog cleared and I saw my dad about 10 feet from me, even though he was mad he was keeping a distance so he wouldn't touch me. Scarlet seemed to notice this too.
"Where's the magic?" My dad asks me. I stare at him, I didn't even now how to summon it. He tsked and the fog began to rise from the ground again. I quickly got to my feet and ran towards my father. He summoned a rain cloud that made the ground instantly damp, mud quickly hindered my advance and I slipped and face planted. I spit the mouth full of mud and glared up at Scarlet who was laughing her ass off.
"I can only do hand to hand combat, this isn't fair." I growled out.
"This is magic training. So use magic." I got up again and tried to summon my magic, nothing happened. My dad quickly made his next advance.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My dad was angry, I hadn't summoned an ounce of magic and he had even resorted to hitting me directly with the lightning. I was sore and tired, I felt like all my limbs would fall right off. My father noticed me getting tired.
"Scarlet, you spar him." My head snapped up, Scarlet smiled deviously.
"Dad. Neither of us have magic, how is this going to work?" I stared at Scarlet to make sure she didn't hit me with a preempted strike.
"I guess you'll have to summon magic to keep her away from you." My father shrugged while Scarlet got in a fighting stance. I quickly did too, even though my muscles begged me to collapse. Scarlet stared at me for a few and then took off toward me. I quickly dodged and pivoted, I would have to fight her like a bull. She was quick to try to strike me again and I was quick to dodge. Of course the third time I wasn't as lucky. She kicked my right in the chest that knocked the wind out of me. The pain of the kick was tripled by the pain of her touching me. The pain radiated and I laid on the ground till it let up.
"Again." My dad commanded me. I got up and got back in my fighting stance. Scarlet attacked again and I was determined to keep her away. Of course she landed another blow and I was in another fit on the ground.
"Dad! I can't. Please, I promise I won't cause trouble anymore." I cried out, tears in my eyes. I could take the lightning, that was less painful than having someone touch me. My dad looked at me with furrowed brows, I let out a exasperated sigh. I wasn't speaking English again. His face said everything. I tried to plead with my eyes, he looked at me with sadness.
"Again." He emotionlessly said. I got up again, the pain vibrating to my core. Scarlet had a sickening smile on her face that my dad probably couldn't see in the pitch black. This time I attacked first, I charged Scarlet. I figured if I was gonna be in pain anyway then I might as well attack. Scarlet dodged and reciprocated with a punch, I sidestepped and swung again. I thought I had caught her off guard like Mac had but she grabbed my wrist which made me cry out. Instead of letting go instantly she held on tripling the pain. She used her other hand to grab my throat and slam me to the ground where her hand stayed. I screamed in pain and my vision went black as I tried to pry her hand from my throat. I felt as if my body was on fire all over again, the pain vibrating from my throat throughout my body. I felt the pressure from my neck leave but the pain stayed. After what seemed like forever the pain subsided, I felt the tears running down my face and my breath come back. I looked at my dad who looked at me with a cold face, his eyes teared before he mouthed the word again. A choked sob left my mouth as I tried to get up. I knew this would go on the whole night.
