"Where were you? I told you to come to see the crime scene!" Chiara glared.
"Sorry, Salvatore called me," He explained, "oh, this smells rancid. I don't want to come in"
"I won't allow you to either," she rolled her eyes, "you're not allowed inside."
She walked in, bracing herself. Yup, it was the same with her too. Face peeled off and throat slit, capsule shoved somewhere most probably," So the body is in autopsy right?... why weren't we allowed to check the scene earlier?"
"Salvatore wanted his special forensic team to check it first" he rolled his eyes.
"Great...but there are no prints anyway" she sighed.
"How do you know that?" he asked, confused.
"She's not that stupid," Chiara pointed out," you won't find anything here. In fact, this isn't even an important murder"
"A person died," he said with a deadpanned face.
"I know and more will die if I don't find her... but this case won't help me do that," She said," Inform the relatives, check cameras and talk to the neighbors. " She seemed dejected by this murder, knowing that no one would find anything.
This wasn't how she would find her... no she had to change techniques. As she drove home, Enzo called complaining that she had left him at a crime scene. She couldn't care less but apologized anyway. He also told her about what Salvatore had told him.
"He wants results, he's going to have to get them himself" Chiara sighed, she really was so tired. Her head had been hurting and Enzo was not exactly the bearer of good news.
She decided to go into overdrive and began her work, cutting the call with Enzo forcefully much to his chagrin. On reaching home, she cleared out all the pictures from her dining room wall and the things on her table. This was ironically going to be her crime scene room.
Sticking small notes all over according to timeline and place, she ensured that all the deaths by Kore and Matteo were visible. As Enzo had said only a few weren't sexually driven, and she had made sure to highlight those using a blue sticky note instead. Information of the victims that were already in folders were separated into piles, according to time and place as well as gender. The newest cases were in a separate file, and she had already pored over them for long enough to memorize them.
"Valentina, 30 years old. Skin peeled and throat slit. Alone at home at the time of the murder, capsule found in the eye" she muttered to herself looking over at all the other notes," Erica, 56 years old, skin peeled, throat slit, autopsy not yet done. Self-note to ask Salvadore why."
Affirming to herself that she was prepared for research, she bathed and tied her hair up. Sitting at the table, she looked at all the victims' files, one after the other. It was interesting how random these deaths were, how silly the lives she had taken were. However...a few victims were strange, fifteen to be exact.
They hadn't been tortured, they had just been hacked to death but Matteo had written his name on all of them, something that Kore had never done. So, why did he need to mark the deaths he had caused? To be known? Or famous?
Biting her lower lip, she pored over Matteo's file which was the bulkiest.
"So many reports..." she mumbled," Social services, police...and older records?" she looked at a few papers that she had overlooked. Evidently, Matteo's father had been very abusive to the boy and his mother. Social services had been called many times due to the appearance of marks and bruises on him. However, after the fourth call, he had been taken out of school at the age of four.
After that, the family shifted to a more isolated place. She couldn't help but grimace as she realized it was probably to hide the abuse. Chewing on the tip of her pen, she read the autopsy report. His father had been nearly mutilated while his mother had her mouth slit from ear to ear. Why were the deaths so different?
After the deaths, the child called the police, and he was to be taken by social services as the crime scene was being processed. However, the car was hijacked and the child was taken, the agents in the car were all dead as well- knife to the neck; Except one- he had a gunshot wound to the head. Execution-style. She did have a suspicion as to why that was but that would be confirmed after she met Matteo.
In the meanwhile, she would research more cases.
