The others had hurried ahead of me a few minutes ago, and now I was all alone. I started whistling to keep myself alert; it was a distraction, something to keep my mind off our dire situation.
I kept adjusting the goggles, continually pulling on the elastic strap to rub at the red, irritated skin underneath. The main discomfort lay with the eyepiece's cold, sharp metal, though, and I knew I'd end up with patches around my face, much like the Panda I had met earlier. Even the observation mechanism was sticking out, causing my head to flop forward as I walked.
'That looks uncomfortable, dear.'
I didn't so much as look up; I knew the Zookeeper was trying to goad me into doing something foolish, and it didn't take much these days.
Another enclosure loomed nearby, the sight snapping me out of my thoughts. 'How cute are you two?' I ask, tapping the window in front of me.
