Chapter 37 - The Change

Chapter 37 :

Three days later :

The chattery room became silent as she walked into the cafeteria. She wore a chocolate brown leather pencil skirt; she marries it with a light blue dress shirt and a pair of beige leather pumps.

All of which added to both her stunning looks and her intimidating aura.

The sound of her heels echoed throughout the room as she walked up towards the coffee maker.

'I wouldn't have to do this every day if that pig took my advice every once in a while,' thought as she poured the coffee into the cup.

She ignored the urge to run as she felt the harsh stares of her colleagues as she took up a bagel from the table.

"Um e-excuse me but that's mines," said a small meek lady while she darted her eyes to the bagel in Rachel's hand.

Handing the bagel out to the girl, she sighed and rolled her eyes while saying, "Here, you can have it..... didn't want it, anyway."

"Yo Rach, the big man wants to see you ASAP!" someone called out from the entrance of the cafeteria.

"Well, it was nice talking to you," announced Rachel as she threw a glance at the girl.

"See ya around," she said, and with that, she hurried to her boss's office.

'That went well,' she thought somewhat excitedly.

The walk towards her boss's office was a very long one. Her boss was the person who prefers to be in solitude. Hence, why there was a two-floor barrier between his office and the workers' office.

Her coffee had gotten cold, and her feet were aching from her walk.

"Come in," invited a deep stern voice as she reached the door.

Rachel quickly fanned herself, straightened her clothes before opening the door.

"Good morning, sir," she greeted in a poised voice as she walked inside the office and took a seat in one seat available.

"Yeah, just sit down as you own here," mumbled the boss as he watched her with tremendous interest.

Rachel heard what her boss said but played stupid, "Did you say something?" she asked in a curious tone while tilting her head to the side.

"W-What?.... Ahh...." her boss asked.

"I was just saying that we've got a huge headline in the making," he continued.

'Wow, this guy must think I'm stupid,' she thought while looking at him.

"Don't we always do that, sir?" she asked.

And continued when she saw the look of confusion on his face, "The hits... you know, making big headlines and all."

"Never mind," she dismissed while shaking her head.

"So who made the headline today?" she asked while crossing her legs at her ankles.

"This person has shocked all the world by being on this unfiltered side of the news," replied her boss while frowning slightly.

"Wow, seems like you have a high respect for this person," observed Rachel.

"Why are you doing this?" she asked, not giving him time to respond to her statement.

"Rachel," he sighed while shaking his head.

"In this world where you get recognition for how daring and heartless or sweet and innocent you are.... you're going to make some very hard decision that's probably going to hurt," her boss started before shaking his head while walking towards the window.

"And even though I'm close to this person... I-I have to do this for my company and reputation. I don't know if we are still going to be frie-" he said before pausing.

"Why am I telling you this?" he asked as he looked at her.

"Because you wanted to," Rachel said bluntly without batting an eyelash.

She watched as her boss scratched the side of his jaw while laughing. His face had turned a light pink color.

'What's going on?' she asked herself as she fixed herself comfortably on the chair.

He pointed his finger towards her while shaking it and said, "And that's why you are going to be the news anchor for this news."

"Huh... What?" she asked confusedly.

The world had always acknowledged her for her harsh judgments on gossips about people's life. She wanted to be recognized for something else other than that.

"Remove that frown from your face immediately," instructed her boss in a stern voice before opting for a softer tone. "look, I know that I promised that you'll have your cook show too, and you will have it after you complete this final job," he said while looking her.

Rachel rolled her eyes, 'Gosh, this shit seems like it's going to follow me to my grave' she thought as she reluctantly nodded her head.

"Great," said her boss as he clapped his hands. "I want this review to be the best you've ever given so far," he advised while giving her a grateful smile.

"Don't hold back..... give it everything you've got, since it's your last appearance on the gossips section and all," he proceeded as he searched for something on his desktop.

"And then we'll both get what we want," he muttered as he quickly typed.

Ten minutes flew by and Rachel was still in her boss's office, unsure of whether to leave or stay. Only the sound of her boss's finger against the keyboard and the occasional tapping of his feet.

"So… I um.... sent the deets to your email, so you're probably gonna get that in a minute," as he said that Rachel's phone pinged alerting her that she received a new message.

Rachel just ignored it and continued to stare at him, "Who am I doing this review on?" she bluntly asked him while giving him a deadpanned look.

He gave her a small smile before walking to the window once more, "Ahh Rachel..... that's something you'll know as time progresses," he said.

'Is he serious?' she asked herself while looking at him.

"Well, sir... I think you don't know me at all." she voiced while crossing her arms.

"Rachel, it's not my job to know you.... but it's your job to do and listen to everything I say and not object," said her boss in a frustrated tone.

"The door is right there, go," he said while pointing towards the door.
