Chapter 26 - EXAMS

"But I'm fine now, Ann," I assured her in response to her worried look. We were in our dorm room. Just the two of us. Flores and Lavinia were in the multipurpose hall and Chris had gone to her evening art class. I told Ann my whole experience to Ann. I knew it would scare her but she needed to know everything from now on.

Neither did she say anything to me, nor did she try to comfort me. She just sat beside me and looked down at the smooth marble tiles. Her black hair was tied into a pony and strands of it fell loosely on her face. I placed my hands on her shoulder and rubbed gently. She looked at me. Her extremely attractive greyish eyes radiated helplessness. Her worry lines were visible. With her lips parted, she looked at me as though she wanted to tell me something. Her look made me feel bad for her, I knew what she was thinking now...I knew deep down she blamed herself for all these events.

I patted her gently on the shoulder and asked

"Hey, why do not you tell me something?"

"I ... I don't have anything to say to you, Sara ...All I can tell is... I am really sorry. I... It's all because of me. They are after me. And you are trying to protect me, and now you are suffering because..." I didn't let her talk much.

"You, idiot. It's not your fault. And ... It's just so stupid of you to think that way," I said, trying to sound as cool as possible.

"But ..."- Ann couldn't continue speaking. This time she was interrupted by Chris, who just came into our room.

"You are still sitting here?"- Chris asked as she walked towards her study table. She put her books and stationery on the table and walked towards us. She sat down next to me and sighed as she began to take off her socks. I waited for Ann to respond, but it seemed like she was also thinking the same thing I was. So I volunteered to answer.

"We were just here..you know..talking stuffs," I said casually.

"Oh, I can read that from Ann's face."- she commented as she peeled both socks off her legs and began stuffing one sock into the other. There was an awkward silence where we both stared at Chris and she continued to stuff the sock.

"Ann, you have nothing to worry about. Sara, here, is a tough shell..She'll manage stuffs."- Chris spoke again and looked up at us.

She had successfully stuffed the sock into the other sock. She looked at me and smiled at me. I knew the reason behind her telling so. She just wanted to give us both hope and encouragement.I smiled back. She stood up and walked to her closet where her precious belongings were kept. She kept her stuffed socks and closed it.

"And guys, we cant keep ourselves occupied with this now. Guess what next week's speciality is?"- she said cheekily and started sipping water from a cup.

I thought hard... 'What was next week's special? Her birthday? Nah, no way. Hmm, Annual day would be the day after tomorrow. But next week....God, this girl.

"What's it, the next week?", I asked.

"Termly exams. "She answered coolly.

"Oh ...", I exclaimed.

'Termly exams.....Wait, what????? Termly...Holy crap.'

"What, mate, not a good joke, if you noticed.' - I pointed out. Ann was on her feet, staring straight at Chris. Chris fished a packet of cookies from her bag and tore it open as she spoke.

"Hahaha ... I don't make lame jokes like you, idiot. I'm serious. We have the semester exams next week."- she said and crunched a cookie.

She walked past me and offered her cookies to Ann, who was now in a state of 'what is the right word' huh yeah, confusion.

I turned to see Chris sitting on the bed I was sitting on, a few moments ago, happily devouring her cookies.

"They did not give the portions. How come they can hold exams all of a sudden, huh?"- I demanded.

"They gave it to us three weeks ago. We were just too busy to notice, Sara."- she replied, still enjoying her cookie.

"But...I...I ...Oh no, Sara. Chris is right. They did give us the portions. Holy gods, how did that slip off my mind?"- Ann exclaimed. She placed her hand to her forehead as she cursed herself.

Wow ... Exams were the last thing I wanted. God, I know you are having a good time playing with my life.

The only thing Aunt Mary and I ever fought about was exams. Hey, I ain't a bad student, nor am I an average student. I am intelligent in my studies and the thing that Aunt Mary used to get upset about was the 3 or 4 marks that I lose in exams. The only negative part of my aunt. But my uncle's the sweetest man I've ever met. He always took my side when Aunt Mary complained about my grades.

"And guess what subject we have first?" continued Chris, snapping me back from my thoughts.

"Math?", I squeaked due to over-anxiety. The rational part of me pleaded for it to be the wrong answer. Not math the first... Not algebra... No.

"Brilliantly answered, my lass." she mimicked our math teacher. The rational part of me screamed out as I heard her assure me that it was Maths Exam the first.

I looked at Ann, who was still busy cursing herself. I had no time to waste.

"Chris, I need those portions. Quickly. Ann, come on ...Don't waste time cursing. It will not do you any good."- I called out to her. I went to my study and started dusting off my geometry books
