Chapter 44 - Teamwork

"Let's go," I picked a random direction, and ran.

I kept my pace somewhat slow for me so that Ethan could keep up. I used my infrared vision to track the people who were following us. When I noticed a gap big enough for Ethan to fit in there with me I darted into it. Grabbing Ethan as he ran by, and yanking him in with me. My tail twitched as I waited for the enemy to pass us by.

The air around me stirred slowly as I got ready for someone to poke their head in our hiding place. Just in case. They passed us by without appearing to notice where we'd hid, but they slowed down. They knew we weren't in front of them anymore.

"They know we hid," I whispered, "Can you make some noise to distract them?"

"Yeah," Ethan's eyes started glowing behind his mask, "Easily."

The sound of crumbling concrete a few blocks down made them turn around, and come back. They were spread out but they weren't looking our way. I changed my color to one that was closest to the crumbling concrete buildings around us, and slid out of our hiding spot slowly as I moved around behind one of the slower guys. I jumped on him turning his head round the wrong way quickly as he burst into red particles. Then I curled up behind debris hoping my change in color would be enough to keep them from noticing me.

"What the hell?" one of them yelled, "Someone killed one of us."

I waited for them to get as close as I could comfortably before jumping over my cover, and darting their way as I cast frozen zone. Two of them were killed as they were frozen to death. I switched direction, and threw a wind blade attack at the remaining three as I darted away from them. The closest one was slashed deeply, but his body broke up my wind slash so it didn't kill anyone else. Both stopped moving as Ethan emerged from hiding as well.

Ethan held out his open hand, and clenched his fist. Crushing the other two.

"We should keep moving," I snorted, "There's at least one guy from another team running around. Let's go get him."

Ethan smiled. We were the ones doing the hunting now. I growled as my spines rose. I liked hunting. I ran through the half collapsed cityscape looking for that last guy.

Determined to find him first. I saw a red blur rush past me with my infrared vision. Whoever I had seen was quick, and the only hot thing on the map right now. I started scaling a building until I was at perched at the very top. Watching carefully for that flash of red to draw my attention once again.

I could see Ethan moving towards something quickly from my vantage point, and jumped off. Rushing towards Ethan since I was pretty sure he'd found the guy I was after. I was faster than Ethan so it didn't take me too long to catch up. I stalked Ethan as he closed in on the speed dude. Ethan picked up a bunch of chunks of rebar, and broke it down into smaller pieces.

Facing them out in all directions. My muscles tensed as I watched him prepare for the speed dude to attack. The rebar then got lower. About knee level. How was he planning to kill the dude by hitting him in the legs?

I saw the speed dude rush in for an attack. Ethan shot his rebar out at the same time. The speed dude ran straight into Ethan's attack. Impaling his legs, and stopping him in his tracks. I jumped down, and walked forward as my color changed back to normal.

"You want to finish him off?" Ethan crossed his arms.

"You caught him," I coiled my tail around my feet as I sat down to look at the pinned speed user, "Your choice."

"Why don't you try freezing him?" Ethan smiled, "That seems to be a pretty effective way to kill players."

"Okay," I walked towards the speed dude, "Ethan, why don't you come over here too? I want to see if I can stop frozen zone from affecting people or if it's a do or die type of attack."

Ethan shrugged coming closer as I cast freeze zone. Everything close to me froze like normal, but the spell didn't so much as touch Ethan.

Notice. Due to ally Ethan being bonded to user, user's spells have little to no effect on ally Ethan.

Perfect. I smiled slightly as the game ended. We were thrown back into the lobby. Since we were the last players standing we weren't sent to the observation area.

25 xp awarded. 320/400 xp until level 6.

We clicked team battle again, and we were thrown into a blue grassy field this time. It was a pretty big field so the rest of the team couldn't make out the teams on the far side.

"Well," I looked at Ethan, "Looks like we won't be sneaking up on anybody."

I ducked down into the grass, and changed my color to match the blue of the grass.

"I'll scout them out," I looked back at Ethan, "I'll be back soon."

I rushed through the grass as fast as I could. I could get some extra xp before the others could catch up to me. Even if I died it was just a game. I wouldn't stay dead. I would just be thrown into the lobby.

I was quickly closing the gap between me, and the closest team. They were slowly moving my way so I ducked down, and waited. Once they were all in my range I froze them. Four were taken out by my freeze zone. The fifth was easy enough to take care of.

I snorted as I glanced back at my group. They were on the move, but slowly. Ethan seemed to be taking the lead.

125 xp awarded. 445/400 xp until level 6. Leveling up.

I hunched down in the grass as that burning sensation washed through me. I didn't know if the game would show me glowing like I did in real life, but I didn't really care. Hunkering down until the burning went away was my best option at the moment.

Hp +5. Strength +2. Agility +2. Stamina +2. Instinct +1. Damage resistance +1. Mana +10. User is now level 6. 45/400 xp until level 7.

Good. I stretched my wings slowly as I got used to my new size. I'd switched back to my original color so I changed color back to that of the grass, and crouched down again as I moved to start hunting the next group. The stronger I got the more lethal I was, and since this was a game I didn't have to worry about being discovered or killed. The fact that I was in the form of a dragon didn't bother anyone.

Beast transformation was a rare magical ability, but it did exist. Since it did exist everybody just wrote me off as a transformation mage. Worked for me. That, and the fact that you didn't have to chat with other players was nice. It stopped me from getting bombarded with questions each time I entered a round.
