Chereads / The Archaic Dragon Mage / Chapter 45 - Hunting

Chapter 45 - Hunting

It was easy for me to slink through the grass unnoticed since I could mimic the color of the grass. My wings twitched as a slow wind flowed over the field. I moved forward quickly. Closing in on the enemy team quickly. I slowed further as I got close.

I was bigger than I'd been before so I was a bit worried that my back or wings were showing, but they didn't seem to notice as I pushed closer, and closer. Freeze zone had quickly become one of my most powerful spells. I wanted to level up my water affinity as soon as possible since it was more useful than air affinity right now. I could heal, and my one ice spell was lethal at close range. My wind slash wasn't bad for killing one person, but once it hit someone the attack broke up.

I could direct the wind attacks any direction I wanted including towards myself which could work to trick people into thinking I was somewhere else. I darted forward suddenly. Only one of them had enough time to look surprised before three of them were frozen. Breaking into blue particles as I jumped on the fourth. Whipping around so I was on his back as his buddy shot him to death.

I sprung upward off of him before he could break up into blue particles, and came down on the last guy. My claws sliced into him easily. My wings opening up fully as I bit down on his face. It was tasteless, but it felt like real flesh, and bone as his face caved in. I snorted as he broke down into particles.

Sinking down to the ground.

100 xp awarded, 145/400 xp until level 7.

I stretched my wings slowly, and flapped them experimentally. My feet came off the ground, and I dropped back down. I looked back at my wings as a small smile formed on my little face. Sweet. My head snapped to the side as I took a hit to the head.

I was thrown into the observation lobby. Someone one shot me in the face. I switched forms, and stretched slowly. I'd let my guard down. My mistake.

"Hey look it's dragonbeast," a couple of players started talking among themselves.

Here in the observation lobby players names floated above their heads. Including my own. I was glad that my human form wore a mask. The fact that I was a mage had gotten around pretty quickly. I didn't acknowledge anyone who came up to me. Preferring to stay silent as I watched Ethan work his way over to the last team with the two random team members that were still standing.

Ethan was in the lead using his telekinesis to block shots the other team fired. There were four members on the other team. The sniper that had probably gotten me, and three others that were tightly grouped up. Facing towards my team. They were firing away carelessly.

If they didn't figure out how to take out Ethan soon they'd run out of ammo. Once they ran out of ammo they were done for. Ethan didn't carry a gun normally. Just a handful of marbles, and a combat knife. I hadn't brought any weapons with me either since I mostly fought as a dragon.

I started tapping my foot out of agitation. I was pretty sure that Ethan had noticed the same thing I had, but there was that stupid sniper. He wasn't shooting carelessly. Ethan was a close to mid range fighter. He could detect enemies that were further out, but sending out an attack that far out, and have it be accurate seemed to be difficult for him.

I could tell from how long it had taken him to take out the sniper in our last round. That was with me giving him proper directions. I wondered briefly how much longer we had left in the game. I wanted to stretch my wings, and see how far I could get off the ground when I flapped them now. Maybe I would be able to glide now.

My anger vanished as the excitement of maybe being able to glide went through me. Once I could glide flying wouldn't be far behind. I was barely able to keep myself from excitedly bouncing in place. That would look weird coming from the dude that had been ignoring everyone's questions up until now. I wanted to be in there doing damage as I accumulated xp.

Flying really excited me. I wanted it so bad I could almost taste it. I briefly wondered how much bigger I'd gotten this time, but I couldn't tell until I was alone with Ethan again. Using him as my scale for growth worked since we were roommates, but I wondered what I would do when, and if I got bigger than him. I was still a hatchling, and when I did stand just on my legs I was almost as tall as Ethan now.

Would I just keep growing every time I leveled up forever? Would it slow down when I ranked up? Would I grow faster when I ranked up? I didn't have the slightest clue what would happen. Just that I was excited to keep getting stronger.

A part of me was sure that I would be a force to be reckoned with once I reached the rank of adult. Especially since the next rank was youngling. Just the name of the next rank confirmed that I would still be basically a child on dragon terms. What was after youngling rank? The system just didn't know anything really.

It could remember everything just fine. It did know bits, and pieces, but there were big gaps in what it did know. I watched as Ethan took out two of the remaining four enemies, but his defense went down when he attacked so he lost one of the guys behind him to the sniper. I didn't know what Ethan was trying to do exactly, but he was clearly upset by loosing one of his teammates. Don't get angry.

I crouched down to get a better look at what was going on. Now that it was two on two the guy behind Ethan got cocky. Rushing forward as he used his magnetic ability to pull the other guys gun towards him.

"Idiot," I mumbled under my breath.

He should have repelled him so Ethan could take him out for him. The magnetic guy died quickly after that. Ethan was screwed now. The sniper was a poor match for him, and the guy in front of him wouldn't give him enough time to line up an attack for the sniper. Ethan would be stuck on the defensive from here on out.
