Chapter 10 - Your Mother Didn't Care Enough

She tried to hold herself together

But their words were breaking her apart

One by one and piece by piece

They were shattering her apart

She tried to look unfazed

But it wasn't working as she wanted

Because the people surrounding her

All took her for granted.

She stood there, frozen

Hands clenched into fists

She tried to find a friend

Among enemies.

Soon she found someone who looked her in the eye

And told her, 'It is all a bloody lie.'

The girl smiled, thankful for the comfort

Because no one ever saw past the exterior of an

Afraid and a scarred child

"Some of my best friends are like fairy tales - they've been here since once upon a time and they'll be here until forever after."

"Alex Snow." A girl spat her name as if it felt like a food that had no taste. When I turned to look who it was, I wasn't the least bit surprised. It was the same witch- the cheerleader- from whose clutches Alex had saved me and told her that I was her boyfriend.

My blood boiled- no one should be treated like that. I get it, she was a lone wolf. But the way they treated her was beyond disrespectful. I thought the teachers were pretty strict about bullying and that this school had never seen bullying.

Guess the students hid it well.

Or- the teachers were idiots and blind.

My vote for both.

fifty-fifty.

"Lisa Hayden." Alex spoke, her voice flat and with no interest or whatsoever. It was as if she had gone through this a million times over.

"Didn't you tell your boyfriend your truth?" Lisa started and then snapped her fingers as if a light bulb had turned on in her brain - giving her an idea. "Oh wait! Why would you? After all these years someone liked you and you wouldn't ruin it by saying you're ill-"

"Lisa, stop!" I growled, standing from my seat. I didn't care if she really wasn't my girlfriend. But I had a conscience and I could not let anything happen like that to girl.

What if Elena was in her shoes?

I would've beaten the person to a pulp if something like that happened to Elena.

Lisa whipped her head around to look at me. The whole class was dead silent. As silent as in a graveyard. Nobody deserved disrespect. Everybody deserved respect. And for jerks for like Lisa. She deserved respect too.

So she'll be respectfully ignored.

"Don't.You.Dare.Talk.To.My.Girlfriend.Like.That !" With each word, I took a menacing step closer towards her until I towered above her. She cowered in fear, her hands trembling, her eyes widened in realization at what had happened. I didn't know what the others were doing. I didn't care. Whether they knew it or not, Alex was officially my girlfriend.

And I had to take care of this mess.

Lucky for me, Alex did not utter a single word against my declaration.

"And if anyone talks about this, I swear you will not live to see another day!" I threatened everyone in general. "And you-" I pointed Lisa. "Stay the hell away from her!"

She quickly nodded and then scurried away to her friends. I was in a rather good mood today. I thought that the last class would be smooth without having to deal with drama and all that crap. But guess, what fate had in store for us.

After the whole incident, the tension in the atmosphere was intense. I could barely breathe and so I decided to get away from the class. I nodded to Jelly and then grabbed Alex by the wrist and stormed out of the room.

No class for today.

What a beautiful ending!

"Dude, that was so cool! -And Alex, you alright?"

Alex hadn't uttered a single word since the drama and she didn't even resist me from taking her out of the class. Honestly, even I wouldn't have resisted if something like that happened to me. Her name was probably the only name I hadn't screwed up.

Not yet, anyways.

Alex still didn't answer. Once we reached the garden, she let out a shaky breath.

"I'm o-okay."

She wasn't.

"Jelly?" Jelly never minded that I called him that. As I said before- maybe I didn't- he never took things to his heart. The best trait anyone could possibly inherit. Jelly took over and started comforting her, saying nice and cheesy things and all. After that tutoring with Candy- when she revealed she knew Alex- I deduced that Jelly knew her too. So it was better if I let him do the comforting.

"I'm fine, Harrington! Fudge off!" Alex snapped.

(Future Jake: Kids, she did not say fudge.)

Jelly raised his hands in defense, taking few cautious steps backwards. "Just trying to help."

"I don't need your help - both of yours -you made things worse!"

Mental note to self: Alex was a ticking - time bomb. Just Like Candy, never piss her off.

"I stood up for you."

"I didn't need that." She snapped.

"Sure you didn't." I mumbled, looking at the ground.

"Oh my god, what happened!" I heard Candy as she ran along with Amy towards the garden where Jelly and I were taking care of a time-bomb.

As soon as they arrived, Jelly filled them in with what happened during the chemistry class and how we were now outside-talking things out. Candy was surprised that I took a stand for someone and pegged it with 'I cared'. I immediately brushed it off by saying, 'It was the right thing to do, I would've done it if anyone else was in her shoes.'

"Water under the bridge won't work this time." Candy shook her head.

"T-They've crossed a-all l-limits." Amy- Emma- agreed.

Alex stopped them. "You wouldn't do anything as such. It's my problem, I'll deal with it."

"You don't have to, Snow, and you know that!" Candy retorted.

Alex scoffed. "Oh yeah? you're not my mother."

Candy whispered. "Your mother didn't care enough."
