Chapter 1 - One

"GET OUT!" Brazillia screamed at the peasant group and they all scattered, laughing their heads off. Brazillia. She was the princess of Venelumbia and a total loser.

Little did she know, Her stepbrother, Prince Chase, happened to be in a relationship with a member of the peasant group, Alexis.

Four years ago, he and his family were the richest in the country below the royal family, but Chases father had left him and his mother, taking his sister with her. And then the king remarried his mother. Making her Queen, and him the Prince. His mother had asked Chase before being coronated Queen, if he was okay with becoming royal. He said as long as he could continue being with Alexis. She allowed it.

So after about a week, Brazillia got a crush on her stepbrother, and always tried to flirt with him. He ignored it. So even though there was a fence between them, Alexis and Chase continued their relationship for five years without the princess finding out. But a couple upper and lower villagers knew about it.

Alexis, Brook, Rose, and Topaz ran out of the castle kitchen, pockets full of crackers and backpacks full of dried meat and fruit. Brazillia huffed and went to tell her father. They were both snobs.

The peasants sprinted through the upper village, passing through mansions, sport court, over the bridge, past the bar and to the separator fence. Stopping, they all looked up. The fence was a huge mess of concrete, steel, chains and barbed wire. But there was a tunnel covered by leaves that the braver peasants used to pass in and out of the upper Venelumbia. The group passed through the tunnel and emerged out the other side.

"wow." brook said and the others nodded

"I know I've lived here my whole life, but the difference always shocks me."

Alexis sighed.

"it'll be different once Chase becomes king. Promise."

Topaz smiled.

"I know. He's a good guy."

They looked out at their section of the city. Rusty tin sheds and small crumbling homes littered the floor, the streets were nonexistent and the houses were spread with space between for walking. Outer walls and boards were showing off different things for sale. One with colourful fabrics, another with multi coloured crystals. There were butterfly wings, rugs, old curtains, clothes, shoes, banners and paint. The entire lower section was one huge busy marketplace where everyone lived. The stores outside the house remains were dusty but very garish and very very busy. As usual, the group separated to give food to the people of their village. She walked to each house giving them a share of meat, fruit and crackers. They thanked her gratefully and spread the good throughout their family.

"you four are our saviors." one woman had said, holding her hands in praise. The girls smiled and thanked them. The girls tried to get food as often as possible. Most of the upper section was generous and felt sorry for the lower section, giving them donations to the girls to pass on to the others whenever they saw them. Although they got quite a bit of food, the lower section was larger than the upper, and the people were still starving.

Alexis finished giving food, keeping a strip of meat for herself and passed back into the upper section. Seeing guards, she gasped and ducked into the trees, waiting until they left and ran to the bar. She pushed open the door and searched for her boyfriend.

"boo." a familiar voice whispered and she turned around, seeing Chase standing right behind her and smiled.

"hey" she said

"hey. I missed you. I heard from my sister that you came in this morning."

Alexis felt guilty. "I'm sorry, but we were all starving, and the grocer was sick, they had to eat, and-"

Chase smiled, "no, it's okay. Don't worry about it."

Alexis returned his smile and pressed her lips against his.

Chase's eyes fluttered shut.

"I promise I'll get rid of the fence once I'm king." he murmured again her mouth and she smiled

"wanna get a drink?"

She whispered

"mmm" Chase snaked his arms around her waist and pulled her close

"I love you." he whispered

"I love you too." she replied, the peasants arms around the prince's shoulders.

Someone coughed behind her and they broke apart to a waitress with her eyebrows raised.

"can I get you a table? Or a room."

Alexis laughed and Chase grinned

"a tables fine thanks."

He said and the they sat down, sipping beers, and talking. After a while, Chase announced:

"I have to go now, the king wants too see me."

Alexis nodded and they kissed once more before they both left. She went back under the fence and into her home, a structure that used to be a house. Two crumbling stone walls, a tin side and a big sheet of red cloth made up the fourth wall, and a straw roof. Four mattresses lay on the floor, surrounding a fire pit. She slumped onto her bed and slept. She woke feeling uneasy. Uh oh. Something was wrong, she could feel it. Just as she thought that, guards burst through the front sheet, and suddenly and she was shoved against the wall, arms bound. There was a second of screaming, scuffle, she heard a shout, felt something warm spread across the side of her head, and everything went black.
