The Change happens in The Room. I haven't been there, but I know what happens. They go there looking... sorta like me, then they take them somewhere to... make them beautiful? I don't think that's what I'd call it. They come out... in despair. I don't know why, and I don't think I want to know, because they come out as... Broken. They don't even see themselves as human. It takes a long time, some even took a whole year, but they have a lot of those rooms so it's no problem for them. They can't get me because my cell is bars and glass. I don't know why it's like that either, but they can't get me.
All of us can't really do anything, but the other... things that are here are on... vacations(?) and can do plenty of stuff. We observe so we can see, but not do. I can't see that much, but what I do see is scary and inspiring. The- adults(?) are scary but the kids are precious. They care for people, though they can't see us. I could only see through the one-way mirrors around our "home." They let us walk around the metal cage outside our usual one sometimes. They call it the observation area. I got kind of scared that they'd do The Change to me, but they seemed to stay away from me most times and always tried to get me to come with them without force.
I wonder why?
There's a big hole in the ground that leads into a bucket. They put some of us in there. Except that the ones they put in there can't move anymore. They're old and decayed and they smell terrible. Every once and a while when someone fights back, they throw them in the hole alive. When that happens, the same sounds come from the hole. Screaming and rummaging, a loud grunt, and a really loud thud. After that the screaming stops. They put lots of people there daily so I knew that it led somewhere outside because there were never any bodies in there when I checked. I wonder where they take all those bodies?
The hole is very deep. "I wonder how far the hole goes... I want to know... Maybe somewhere out of this place, or maybe somewhere even more dangerous than here. Hmm... I- could take Tommy with me. He was Changed but he's still Tommy. I'll ask him to go with me..." I thought nervously. I rushed over to him, grinning. I asked him if he wanted to get away from here with me, and waited for him response. He was shocked at first, looking at me. He paused for a bit, and then he nodded. "He actually said yes! Finally, I get to fulfill my curiosity! It's... surprisingly deep. Well, I'll drop a rock and count. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
Seven seconds... I will probably live if I drop, and Tommy certainly will. He's six years older than me, so he should live. Let's Go! 1, 2, 3, 4, 5! Ooowww... I thought it was 7 seconds. The rock lied to m-" Tommy covered my mouth with his hand. He snickered at first, but he stopped when he saw what I saw. I thought that cooking was elegant but... now it's disgusting. It was a scene that would be burned into my memory.
We heard the crunching and squelching of people being cut up and cooked. I hold on to Tommy for my dear life. We hid but... this was excessive. We were behind a gigantic pile of bodies so the chef couldn't see us, but Tommy stayed in front of me just in case he turned around. He's obviously one of them judging by how he looked. We were going from pile to pile so we can reach the vent but when we reached it, the chef saw us. We climbed into the vent so he only saw us for a split second but we still heard deafening alarms sound everywhere except in front of us. We crawled and crawled until we finally got to an escape. A vent cover. We knew that if we get caught, we die so we checked through the cover. It was a seemingly untouched room. We could regroup there if there was trouble, so we went in, and locked the door.
