Chapter 1 - Faustian Bargain

Main Character's Pov

Once again I clutched my heart, breathing in a irregular pattern and my vision blurry. The pain in my heart, an all too familiar feeling, slowly starts to recede, breathing normalizes and vision keeps getting clearer.

I always hated this part, luckily or unluckily it would soon be over, as the collecters would soon be here to collect.

I touched the black floor around me, causing not just the floor but what seems to be the walls and the ceiling ripple. I never knew what this room was. It felt like a liquid and a solid, even coming here a hundred times before never gave me much time too analyse.

As I slowly am succumbed to boredom, I check the only thing that I can even read, my status.

Talent: Talentless

Again that screaming condition, it screams at me like a mother to their disobedient child. It thinks I don't know that. Yeah like a hundred times of hearing that didn't tell me that I don't have a body. Unfortunately it didn't have an off button.

Then there was the elephant in the room, my trait, reincarnation, a trait that my body didn't possess but my soul. I always found it weird that I had this trait.

Throughout my lifetimes I never seen or even heard of someone with my trait, there was always a person with a copy of a trait.

But me a person who never excelled in academics, sports, public speaking and generally anything had the trait that people would tear their own families apart for, and many did.

I've tried more times then I have count to look through the list of traits to look for reincarnation, but I guess it is a power no normal body could handle.

A pain shoot through my head, my hands now a white mist illuminated the room around me. Then as I dealt with what I call Reincarnation Sickness, a term I coined. Memories flooded in, my mind bending, the already twisting room, twisted more. Hands, although blending in with the background, started to appear. Although, even with my illumination I couldn't see them I knew they were getting closer.

Thoughts started to flood in about how if I only had one more chance, just one more chance. Even with my talentless nature, I could succeed. But the feeling returned of the hands getting closer, slowly consuming me.

"Heh, I guess my last thought would be about how talentless I am." A voice startled me, my own voice, my true voice spoke. "This shouldn't happen here. This never happens here. I thought that this void consumed all, including sound."

I although panicking, I hear a stepping sound like boot on concrete, it sounded so.....solid. No being should be able to walk on this floor. "It shouldn't be possible." My voice echoing into the void, bouncing off and coming back into my ear, almost like I'm talking directly in my ear.

*Step*

*Step*

Another creature appeared. A creature in this solitary confinement that I call the waiting room was here. It's skin a silky white, almost translucent, flowed like water. It's size fluctuated almost like a balloon constantly being blown with air and then deflating, as rapid as lightning.

"Then those, those terrifying God-like eyes..... wait why are you talking in my voice? Why are you saying my thoughts?" The creatures head grew, but not like it was before, the head grew with a purpose. A grin as large as a whale was sprawled on the creature's face.

The grin although terrifying, was like the warm grin of a mother, but yet a sense of rejection was still felt. Then the creature disappeared. "Where did the creature go?"

A warm breathing sensation, the breath of life was on my shoulder as the creature, form now fixed appeared beside me, he spoke my thoughts once again.

"Wow you really are weird aren't you, got some kind of main character complex you got going on. I mean why wouldn't you after all you put it better yourself 'Throughout my lifetimes I never seen or even heard of someone with my trait'." The creature spoke once again still in my voice, but no longer reading my thoughts.

"I don't speak your thoughts because they're so negative. Come on relax, I'm the only thing keeping the hands of debt from touching you." The creature now walked in front of me, form like mine except one new detail, the golden light it gave off, the hands we're scared of it shrinking away from the void now bathed in a golden aura.

I pick myself up, something I couldn't do before, always in this room laying down. Since any other movement would cause me to move slower as the liquid of the void would wrap around me, constricting my movement, until I was at a dead stop.

"What are you and why are you here?" I spoke my voice croaked, the feeling of dust escaping my would be throat.

The golden figure responded, "Good question. It's almost an interest of mine of collecting souls of worthy people and gathering their stories. The ones untold by history."

I shot back immediately, my voice now more questioning wayned, "So you're a collector, knew one was coming for me never thought one could look like you." I slowly move backwards, my stance now was in a defensive move taught during my 67th reincarnation, Turtle's Fortress.

"Now, now no need for this show of defense, I don't do what those so called collectors do. They're more harvestors for the big guys, the Officials."

My face now scrunched. Something that I again shouldn't have. "Wait why do I now have features?" I now shout accusatorily towards the figure highlighted by gold.

"That's because of my artifact, [Lighthouse], helps to purify and make the souls which were lost more clear and creates a clear path for them to walk on. I wanted a good look at the soul that saw Earth get destroyed a hundred times. The willpower you have shouldn't be possessed by any other humans. Maybe even the talentless have their merits."

The feeling of being looked down upon once again was felt by me. I hate it. However this is a being a unimaginable strength.

"Now I have a propostion for you." Its hands struck together, with sparks flying out from the hands back into the void, illuminating the black tendrals immitating hands were still there.

"What is it?" I step backwards realising that this figure could squash me at any moment.

It spoke once again, "I'm curious." My face was now perplexed, but it continued. "You see there are characters through myth and legend that never got the second chance they wanted. They were always like you saying, 'If I only had one more chance, everything would be different.'"

I was now intrigued as this creature so neutal in emotion was now quickly picking up an enthusiasm, like a kid who read a book about wizards and wanting to see if they were one by pointing a stick and saying random words to cast a spell.

"Yes, like that, exactly like that. My offer is for you to share your knowledge of the future to 100 other people in exchange for one last chance at the Game. A chance to save Earth." My movement stiffened, contemplating what I just heard.

"You can send me back, I thought outside forces couldn't do that. That they couldn't interfere with the game." The creature once again smiled, the void an almost immovable substance shook, tremors were felt throughout the room. My stability already shaking, almost made me tumble. "Who says I'm an outside force." I was frozen out of pure fear, but shivering from anger.

I calmed down, once again remembering what he said, "You can bring me back?". The figure more regal spoke agin in my voice. "Yes, but there are some drawbacks." "Like what?"

The creature then put out it's chest, I think. "Well, since you will be working with in the game with basically a cheat sheet of all events and pathways there are, you would have to share that knowledge with others."

"Basically before you ask, the figures from history and myth would spawn in bodies that you have created and reincarnated to. Would be a waste to just get rid of all those pre-made characters. I don't have to do anything. My thought is what would happen if the most talented people in history and myth were to possess the bodies that you built, could they actually change the final outcome."

The creature continued, "So they would only gain knowledge that the you in that reincarnation would have. Which means the knowledge that you would have in the first reincarnation the person selected would have that knowledge and not any knowledge that you would've had in any future reincarnations." It's figure now got closer, my back was now pressed against the void.

"However I can't have you making a new character, the laws deny it, and you can't take control of anyone else's body, so why not your original body."

"What?" My voice was now shaking. The terrifying, golden figure took pleasure in my confusion and fear.

"Yeah. Don't you want to go back, I know you want to go save your family again." Its voice morphed into a laugh, like a record stuck playing the same part over and over again, with a painful screech in its voice.

"However I think that going back into that traitless body, with just knowledge is just cruel, so if you take my deal when you spawn back to an hour before the Game begins, you will gain a special trait only one other person on Earth has. Although it may be delayed a wee bit."

My brain was working faster than before looking over multiple memories of traits and people who had unique traits, there were many but it's given me no knowledge of what it could be.

The creature using my voice once again speaks, "Ah, if I did that where would be the fun. Where's the mystery. You will figure it out when you revive." It stops for a second looking out into the darkness. "We only have one more minute before the collectors."

A growl that made me feel primal fear sounded out into the void, getting closer. The creature then reached out its hand. "Now won't you shake a poor sinner's hand." The hand stuck out becoming a pure golden light.

I contemplated, the growls started getting louder. Still I contemplated, the growls were so close that I felt its breath on the back of my neck, the Lighthouse's light started getting smaller. I then moved as fast as I could and shook the golden hand.

A swirling golden light wrapped the room illuminating the void making it as clear as day. A portal appeared behind me, the creature, face now spirialing, said two words, "Entertain me."

I was then pushed and descended into the portal below, all colours flew past me faster than light. I was getting faster. Faster, faster. My soul was being copied, with it flying off into different directions.

The white figures now gained forms different from my own but I couldn't get an exact description of their features, except two.

A red figure highlighted by a golden light, not as bright as the creature but still bright like the sun. Then another figure wrapped in a mixture of purple and blue colouring.

These figures started forming together molding into one spirit, perfectly split in half with one being the red-golden figure and the other being the purple and blue entity.

They shot off from me towards what came into view to be London. Then my descent slowed.

It slowed down until I reached Dublin, landing in Merrion Square Park, my soul gravitates towards a brown haired, green eyed boy with glasses, half asleep.

He wears a green, wrinkled hoodie and navy jeans, with tears from the night before and with white shoes with a black design and black laces, with one untied.

My vision is no longer one travelling along with light, but now of a lush park filled with trees, statues parading the area, people taking photos of each other, some miserables students walking by, families playing together.

Then finally I finally spoke in my real voice for the first time in forever, "Ah, man that was too easy." I smile knowing that I got away with tricking the Game's Creator into giving me one last chance. I thank Sisyphus for his book 'How to Trick Gods and God-like Beings for Beginners'.

"Now lets begin." I tie my shoe laces, fix my hoodie, slap myself awake and head off towards the National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology. 'He should be there, got to find him before the celtic warriors are summoned.' I thought as I sprint as fast as my feet could take me.
