Back in Cavalcafé's restroom, Cheron and Oto use the Scythe as a door lock. The heavy shaft is cleanly wedged in the door's handle, but the blade is so large that it obliterates the nearby sink. Good enough.
Cheron and Oto stand at each other's side, both bracing a sink and staring at the mirror. Silence fills the room.
"So!" Oto clasps his hands together. His eyes glow, faint but steady. "What did you want to ask me?"
Cheron huffs her bangs away from her eye. "Now is hardly the time." She turns to her partner. "About what Juby said... Are you okay?"
Oto perks his brows at Cheron as if he wasn't listening. "Hm? Yeah, the universe ending is sort of a bummer. We're going to be awfully busy. Does that mean everyone's going to Purgatory? Eugh, I don't want to think about that." He reaches into his breast pocket for a small tin, opens it, and pops two painkillers.
Cheron frowns and takes two from the tin as well. Without directly saying so, both reapers have decided to drop their previous questions. "We have to reap Juby before she leaves, haunts the mortal realm, and causes any more chaos."
"That might be a little difficult, what with the party outside." Oto gestures to the door. An onslaught of banging and screaming awaits on the other side.
Cheron's eye widens to the door then back to Oto. "I have a plan. But we're going to nee—"
The horde of Earthlings smash down the door, and the Scythe flies into Cheron's grasp. The rioters come in all shapes, sizes, and species, but they all share one similarity: blood-curdling rage aimed directly at Oto. The ghost of the man who killed Juby leads the mob. Beside him, a spider-like alien grips eight makeshift scythes. Cheron thrusts the true Scythe, causing the mob to shuffle back like a single feral creature.
The human ghost's golden eyes meet Oto's glowing ones. "Ooohh... He does have jaundice!" The ghost calls out to Juby, who is still in the dining room, rocking back and forth beside her corpse. "Sorry, boss. Yeah, that was my bad. Whoops..." The ghost trails off and turns back to Oto, who examines his eyes in the mirror.
"Jaundice?" Oto stretches his lids and frowns at his reflection. "I forget. Is jaundice bad? Do I look bad?"
"You're a beautiful baby boy," Cheron says, nudging the Scythe into the crowd as if she were shooing a dog. "Now, if your ego is ready, it would be so totally, absolutely, positively righteous if you were to move your beautiful baby self and help me."
Oto nods. The spider hurls two scythes down at Cheron. She leaps and reaps the human ghost before gliding back to Oto. He catches her and hops, phasing through the wall. They land on the other side in time to watch Juby sprint to and stop at the main exit.
"This is the man of the hour, people!" Juby hollers, gesturing to Oto. Her eyes glint with rage and tears that vaporize as they fall. "If you have any questions, comments, or complaints about your uninhabitable homes or your broken families, he's the one you're looking for. Now if you don't mind me..." She turns toward the rioters' spacecraft. "...I've got a flight to catch."
Oto's eyes beam brighter and brighter as Juby waves goodbye. The mob falls over itself and out of the restroom. Mindless rioters left outside beat the windows until they shatter. All the vicious refugees block the exit and surround the duo just before they can leave. Oto can't phase through the living. Juby's silhouette disappears in the dark distance. The crowd closes in. The golden light is blinding.
Gripping the Scythe tighter, Cheron gulps and steps away from her glowing partner. Her back bumps into the spider. "Oto, can you hear me?"
Oto shakes and grips his radiant head. "It's taking every ounce of my physical vessel, but I'm listening." A rioter swings a rally sign at him. It splinters on impact. Oto doesn't even blink.
Cheron's expression lightens. "We're going to need the rope."
Before she can continue explaining, the spider swings each of his scythes down at Cheron. She evades each one, so the alien looks like he's playing an invisible xylophone. She stops to catch a breath, and a rioter strikes her from behind. Another kicks from the front. The spider gashes her side. She falls back and catches the blood escaping her mouth.
"Cheron!" Oto screams. He whales the spider. The body crashes into the crowd like a bowling ball. Several people recorded that. Millions more will see it on the Hivemind.
"Stop!" Cheron yells back at her partner. "Don't fight them!"
Oto freezes and lets his bloodied hand fall. Rioters continue whacking him with signs. Initially, they felt more like pats, not whacks. But now, as he watches the crowd swallow Cheron, every blow hits like a hammer. Blood drips from his nose. He stares at the stain it leaves on the ground, then whips his gaze back to the mob. Oto stares and tilts his head at the sight. The ones beating him stop to stare too. The crowd is pulsating. The crowd pulsates again and again and again, until it explodes, revealing two colossal hooves punching upward. Sven and Toupika emerge. Between them, Cheron staggers to her feet, using the Scythe as a crutch. Oto rushes to catch her.
Toupika continues holding off the crowd. "Sorry our boss sucks," he says to Oto, slugging three rioters at a time.
"Yeah, go catch her, brother." Sven grips two rioters frothing at the mouths. "By the way, your biceps are particularly radiant."
Oto exhales something like a chuckle in reply.
Cheron wraps her arms around his neck. "Get us to the Hearse," she says between laboured breaths.
Oto nods and uses the Scythe to vault over the crowd. He skips atop two heads before phasing out of the building and into the Hearse. The mob spills out after the duo, but Sven and Toupika push back the collective beast.
Cheron drives toward the titanic spacecraft, which has just barely lifted off the ground. From the cockpit, Juby scowls down at the duo and floors the gas.
Cheron brakes and pops up the sunroof. "We're right under her. There's practically no chance of screwing up." She hands Oto the Scythe and the rope, but does not let go of either when he grabs them. "You know what to do."
Oto ties the rope to the Scythe. He assumes what he assumes should be his position, clutching Cheron's headrest and reeling the Scythe back. Cheron braces herself. After a count of three, she and the Scythe rocket through the open roof. Juby's eyes widen as Cheron misses and continues shooting upward.
Juby stops, rolls down a window, and holds her body out. "You idiots! You guys missed! You were right under me and you missed!" She wheezes in laughter at Oto, who climbs on top of the Hearse. He smirks, jerks the rope, and holds his arms out, ready to catch.
Juby's eyes widen and dart upward. Before she can retreat back into her cockpit, Cheron spins down on her like a pinwheel. Moonlight spills off the blade as it hooks the ghostly neck then plummets. Oto leaps into the air, catches Cheron, and twirls. They land cleanly on the grass and hold each other tight. Excess vapor bursts all around like cloudy fireworks.
"We did it!" Oto twirls them again. His eyes glow brighter than ever, but Cheron doesn't mind. "This is the worst dinner I've ever had, but we did it!"
"Yeah!" Cheron arches her back in delight, still gripping Oto's shoulders. "I'm going to shudder every night before bed just thinking about tonight, but we did it!"
The two can't stop smiling at each other. Just kidding, they totally can, and they totally do as the colossal spacecraft swerves around and spirals straight into the highly renowned, most universally loved café. The building explodes. Everyone inside dies. The flames grow and gobble up the surrounding grasslands. Even the grazing horses aren't safe.
Still staring at the catastrophe, Cheron reaches into Oto's breast pocket for the pills. They both down the rest.
