She lay still and lazily in her bed even though she had woken up since hours ago. Her pillow was stained with dry tears she had begun to evoke sometime at night and earlier this morning.
She could sense and hear movements from downstairs and hushed whispers.
"...go wake your sister up,Kai!"
"But Mom,why me? She hardly ever speaks to me since...since..."
Since she found out she wasn't normal. Normal as in human.
She wasn't human. And she completely freaked out.
When she made to grab a bowl that morning and it had completely froze over.
Shock was evident in everyone's faces that day...literally the day before yesterday.
Or when she had froze the rails of the stair case.
Or when she was chasing Kai around the house for taking her uncompleted design and she had shot him a snow ball...from her hands. In the middle of autumn.
God,she felt like a freaking Elsa. And still does till now.
"Kai! Go wake up your sister, right this minute!" Dad's stern grumble reached her ears.
"But...but she's gonna rebuff me anyway...she doesn't even talk to me anymore..."
Shenny cursed under her breath and weighed her options.
One: She dutifully goes downstairs and greets her family with a cheerful smile.
Two: She goes downstairs and ignores her family.
Three: She waits for Kai to come pounding on her bedroom door.
Let's go with the second.
She got up from the bed and put on her flip flops moving to the door. As she wrenched it open, she met a Kai halfway to reaching for the knob.
Shock and surprise were in his widened eyes and he took a moment before averting his eyes and clearing his throat.
"Um,Shenny,Mom an-"
"I heard." She muttered as she brushed past him and headed for the stairs.
Her parents were arguing over something as she came into the living room.
"...its the only best choice right now,John!!"
"No,it isn't! You'll make things a million times worse,Debby. Let her be."
"You know that's not possible,John. That's the only rational place for her. She isn't fucking human!!"
Shenny halted in her tracks as if someone stepped on her brakes. The last sentence ringing in her ears.
She isn't fucking human!!
She knew it.
She just fucking knew it.
Her family didn't want her anymore.
I told you, a voice inside her head resounded. It was only a matter of time...didn't I say?
They want a perfect normal family...and you aren't a part of it...cause your not normal...
Its only a matter of time...before they say you can't stay here anymore...
Its only a matter of time...before they pack you up and throw you out...
Its only a matter of time...before they ship you so far far away...where you won't disturb their peaceful life with your weird shit...
Its only a matter of time...
You just wait and see...
As she was standing there, Debby walked up to her and placed a hand on her shoulder, making her momentarily tense.
"Swee-, Shenail...me and your father need to talk to you."
She didn't call you 'sweetie' like she used to...you don't deserve it...
She called you by your full name...
Something big was coming. That was the thought on her mind as she reluctantly followed her mother to the living room and towards her father.
As her mother settled beside her husband, Shenny settled on the sofa opposite them.
Something big was coming.
She squirmed under her parents prying eyes in silence for a few minutes.
"Why did you call me?" She asked, not meeting their eyes.
Debby looked over at her husband who shook his head and looked away.
She glared daggers at him before turning to her daughter.
"Swee-, Shenail, your father and I need to tell you something."
It was coming. So close,so close now.
Shenny swallowed and squeezed her eyes shut.
No. They wouldn't see her cry. She was strong. She could do without them...right?
As she opened her eyes, she stared straight into her mothers eyes. They could bring whatever they wanted to bring her way. She didn't care. She would take it, then bury it...deep down so that it wouldn't hurt so much.
"I figured." She responded.
Debby's chest was uncomfortably tight. She didn't know how to do this.
Shenny wouldn't like it. She knew.
But it was for the better. For the greater good. She needed this.
"Well...you-your not...your not normal,Shenny..."
Shenny flinched subtly, her strong demeanor wavering, just for a second before they went right back up.
John nudged her and glared at her.
"Not cool,Debs." ,he mouthed.
She rolled her eyes and flipped him off.
"No need to state the obvious...Deborah." Shenny answered, menacingly.
She went rigid and so did John. A soft gasp came from Kai who had been standing in the doorway since.
Deborah.
Her full name. Shenny had never called her that.
Ever.
It was always Mom.
Tears pricked the edges of her eyes but she sucked in a breath and tried as hard as she could to will them back.
Looking in Shenny's eyes now,she didn't want to believe it but...but they couldn't ignore the black amongst the white.
Shenny was hating her. Her father. Her brother. Her family.
The budding hatred was there. Not so clear, but it was still there.
"Debby, forget about this, please." John whispered and Shenny's eyes flickered between them.
Debby nudged him away and he glared at her before stiffly nodding.
"Fine,do what you want. But just know I won't have my daughter hating me because of this." He said, very lowly.
"She won't."
I hope.
Debby cleared her throat. It was now or never...and never wasn't part of the options in her book right now. With one breath she said,
"Shenny, your father and I are sending you to a boarding school in Irkshore. We think its better if you stay away for now so that you won't hurt yourself or anyone with your powers now...since your not...normal." She spewed out and cringed.
Shenny stared back at them for sometime as an unknown emotion flickered past her eyes before they went dead again.
"Boarding school." She stated, her voice lifeless and neutral.
Debby nodded slowly,watching her daughter.
"Irkshore." Her voice was slightly...amused?
No one answered and her face went blank again.
Slowly, she shook her head and gave a small lifeless and mean chuckle. Then she raised her eyes to her father who immediately went still in his seat. Her eyes fixed on him, somehow thoughtful before they moved to Debby.
Debby blanched at the hatred she saw in those sea green depths. They were burning so fiercely although her face remained stoic.
Kai was tense, his eyes darting between everyone in the living room, his eyes mostly on his sister.
Shenny sat back and chewed on her lip. Of course, she expected this. That unwanted feeling.
Of course they'd send her away...for some time, huh?
She huffed inwardly. Pathetic.
They were so pathetic.
She raised her eyes to her parents.
"I don't understand. I get that you don't want me,but why a boarding school all the way in Irkshore?"
"Debby, how can you say we don't want-"
She held up her hand, silencing her mother. "If you want to throw me out then just fucking do it. Boarding school? Is that the best excuse you have? I don't want you butter-cupping the fact that you don't want a abnormal daughter in your perfect little family. So don't try to be soft for my sake." She glared.
John spoke up. "Shenny...we aren't looking for a way to deposit you. We just think its for the best..."
"The best of what?!" Shenny yelled as she got up in fury, her eyes burning with unhidden anger and hatred.
"The best for your reputation?! Is that it?! I've told you, don't try to act like you care cause I know you don't! I'll leave! That's not a problem!!"
"Shenny, sit down right this moment." John demanded, sternly.
"And who do you think you are to tell me that?"
John's eyes narrowed to slits. "I am your father,Shenny,so I'm sayi-"
Shenny's cold and heartless laughter rang in the living room. Then she glared at John, her fists clenched.
"Father?! You think your my father?! Who told you that?! Or are you just wishing?!"
John tensed at her words. "Shenny.."
"Your not my father..." She pointed at Debby. "...you aren't my mother...and you...I don't know who you are." She seethed at Kai.
"I don't know any of you. My real parents would never indirectly throw me out because they think I'm not normal!! My real parents are dead!! They're fucking dead! Or they're just somewhere out there!!"
Debby grabbed her arm. "Shenny, how can you say that..."
Shenny jerked her arm away from Debby and pointed at finger at her, eyes gleaming viciously. "Don't you dare. Don't you dare touch me,Deborah!"
"Shenny.."
"JUST SHUT UP!! SHUT THE FUCK UP!!" She screamed and the whole room went quiet.
"You wanna know what you are?" She asked rhetorically. "Cowards. Your all cowards. Stupid fucking idiotic cowards." She spat.
Her family flinched at her vicious words. Deborah was already sobbing softly into her palms but she didn't care.
Her pain was far worse than theirs.
"Cowards." She repeated quietly and stormed out of the room, past Kai.
As she took the steps by two up to her room,Kai ran after her.
"Shenny...Shenny...Shenny please listen to me...Shenny please..."
She threw her door open and stepped in,ready to close it but Kai put his feet in the way, blocking her.
His eyes were pleading and desperate.
"Shenny,please don't do this..Shenny please believe me...this isn't what it seems..."
Shenny turned and walked inside the room, opening her curtains and letting the sun in. Â
Kai hesitantly followed. "Shenny, your my sister. Powers or not...please believe me." He whimpered.
Shenny stood by the window, staring blankly out at the road. There was a tense silence between them before she heard a choked breath.
"Believe me,Shenny...please..." Kai whimpered from behind her.
Tears pricked the corner of Shenny's eyes and one rolled down before she could stop it.
Kai...
He was in his first year of high school and this whole family schomz would definitely take a toll on him.
But....
She turned to face him and placed her hands on his shoulders. The tears were flowing now like a broken dam.
And fuck did she care.
She swallowed a lump in a throat and said,"Kai, I don't want you to suffer for this,but...but,why would they be so selfish? Just because I'm not normal they're sending me to some fucking school all the way in Irkshore. They don't care,Kai. Nothing you tell me will make me think otherwise."
Kai opened his mouth to say something, but shut up. He sighed and ran his hand through his messy blond hair. "Its not true,Shenny. Mom and Dad don't hate you...I wish you could understand." He reluctantly stepped out and before he could turn, she slammed the door and locked it.
Sliding down on the floor, the dam of her tears broke and the rivers of many waters gushed out oh-so-everflowing. They really didn't need to sugarcoat stuff. She wasn't normal..and she accepted it.
