Chereads / Deathless Death / Chapter 2 - 1

Chapter 2 - 1

After a long session with Overhual, he weakly asked to go see Eri.

-----

A dark room filled to the brim with toys is what her opened her innocent red eyes to. She didn't wake up to it though. She woke up to pained screaming of the boy she looked up to. The boy that would always smiled whenever she had a rough session. All she knew was that he always begged Overhual to go see her.

Was she being a burden?

Overhaul always said she was.

The boy always denied that thought with a smile.

She flinched when the door opened to reveal light. The smiling of a green haired boy is what always welcomed her. Legs, arms, and even his neck were wrapped in bandages.

Yet he still smiled when he saw her.

"Eri-chan." His voice rang out to her with a soft, weak smile.

He was smiling.

She didn't know his name.

Eri jumped out of the bed and ran up to him. She hugged bandaged legs as a scarred hand patted her head. He was always so gentle. So calm. She knew he was just as scared as she was.

He closed the door behind him quietly before turning on a light that dimmed the room. It was very calming to say the least. She didn't say anything to him, but he managed to strike up conversation.

"I'm sorry, Eri-chan."

Why was he sorry? He didn't do anything wrong.

The boy picked her up before walking away from the door. They couldn't hear footsteps. That meant everything was safe for now.

Setting her down on the bed, he grabbed a brush before brushing through her messy hair. He was always gentle. Such a warm touch that always meant comfort. He never brought her any harm. They both stayed silent enjoying each other's company to the fullest. They don't get to visit each other much, but when they did it was always peaceful.

They talked quietly about random things.

Other times, they both stayed silent.

The boy always smiled at her, so she smiled back. It was a small smile, but a smile nonetheless.

The boy started to hum a song. It sounded like a lullaby of some sorts. It was soft and warm like the way he comforted her when they got the chance. She looked up at the boy's freckled face as he hummed softly. He looked at her with a smile and a questioning look.

"What's that?" She asked in the smallest of voices. If it was possible, his smile softened even more. He didn't answer right away and instead looked forward. Her silver-ish hair was as smooth and soft as freshly woven silk when the boy finally answered her.

"A small song. It just popped into my mind one day"

"Does it have words?"

He looked down at her "A song doesn't always have to have words to mean something" his voice barely over a whisper, "To me, it means so much more. It means freedom."

Her eyes widened at his words. Freedom? She's thought about it before but...there's no way of getting out of this place.

"It means friendship, peace, and serenity" he muttered, "Do you know what that is, Eri-chan?"

She shook her head no.

A sad smile appeared on his face "It means happiness. Hum that song whenever you feel sad, okay? Can you do that for the both of us?"

She nodded.

They hummed the peaceful song together until the boy was ripped away from her.
