Chapter 53 - Side Chapter: Scarlett's Backstory

A/N: This isn't today's chapter, just an extra bit for the fun of it. There will be another side chapter for Nova's backstory tomorrow. I hope you enjoy my first true attempt at a tragedy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scarlett is currently sitting on a small bed next to Nova with Ariel, Neo and Topaz on another bed across the room from them. (A/N: The room set up is identical to the room where Weiss and Yang had their heart to heart before the fight at Haven.) Taking a deep breath, Scarlett looks towards her friends and begins speaking.

Scarlett: "I don't know if you all remember or not, but back when we first became teammates, I had promised to explain my reason for wanting to become a huntress when we became closer. I now know that I can trust you all with my life and would now like to explain my past and how it has driven me to try to become a huntress."

Topaz: "No matter what it is Scarlett, we will always be here for you."

Scarlett: "Thank you, all of you. You don't know how much I needed to hear that."

Nova grabs her hand and gives it a reassuring squeeze. Scarlett once again gives him a small smile and takes another deep breath.

Scarlett: "To start things off, I should explain that I was born the youngest of two children. My father was a huntsman and my mother worked as a seamstress to help bring in a little more money. Sadly, my father was killed while on a mission when I was three, and my brother made it his goal to become a huntsman himself to help mom with the difficult money situation. Four years later, my brother graduated from a small huntsman school and became a huntsman. He would leave for missions and come back home a few days later, but after a while, he started acting strange. Every time he'd come home after that he would be constantly looking over his shoulder and looked paranoid. I followed him one day to see why exactly he was acting like that. He entered a really shady looking building on the edge of town and when I followed him I found out why. I learned that day that my brother while on his missions began to smuggle drugs to high paying customers. I quickly ran out of the building and started heading home, hoping my mom would be able to help in some way, but before I could get there, I was tackled and someone began to strangle me. I soon started seeing spots and the world slowly began to go dark when suddenly my brother threw my attacker off, saying there can't be any bodies, it would only cause more suspicion. So they tied me up and dragged me into the building once more."

Ariel: "Oh my gods, that's terrible."

Scarlett: "That wasn't even the worst of it, I don't know how long it was, but I was eventually dragged out of the building and handed to some random stranger. I watched as my own brother sold me as a slave to some random rich man. That man then took me to his mansion, dragged me into his office and tried to violate me. I did the only thing I could think of at the time, and grabbed the letter opener off his desk and stabbed him."

Scarlett begins to break down into tears at that point.

Scarlett: "After killing him I ran. I ran until my legs couldn't hold me anymore and I collapsed. Some passing huntresses found me and took me with them, asking me why I was alone in the middle of the story. Once they heard it, they rushed towards my hometown to try and stop the corruption from spreading any further, but sadly they were too late. By the time we got into town my brother and his group had every guard in town in their pockets, but we didn't realize it. When I tried to talk with my mother about it I found an empty home. The huntresses took me into the town center to confront my brother, and there we found my mother's lifeless corpse chained to the wall with bloody gashes all over her. I passed out from the sight, and later woke up in a bed somewhere I didn't know. One of the huntresses walked in with a bandage over the left side of her face. She explained to me that after I had passed out, my brother had attacked the huntresses. All four were able to escape with their lives, but not unwounded. They took us to Mistral where they retired and raised me to become what a huntress should be. I became a huntress to become strong enough to go to my home and put an end to my brother and his crimes."

Everyone goes quiet before making their way over to her and giving her a big hug.

Topaz: "When the time comes for you to go and confront him let us know. We will have your backs."

Scarlett: "I can't ask you guys to do that. It's a suicide mission."

Nova: "By yourself, probably. As a group, still probably, but there's a chance it will be a success."

Scarlett: "I don't want you guys to die because of me."

Ariel: "And we don't want you dying without us having your backs."

Topaz: "We are your teammates Scarlett, no matter how dangerous the mission, we will be right there to back you up."

Scarlett: "Thank you all."
