Chapter 9 - Cat and Mouse

John holds the large scale tight in his grip until it breaks in half. A loud scream is heard from the courtyard.

John: yup. That's definitely it.

Mason: lets go. Where did you find that?

John: ugh... You're not gonna like my answer.

Mason: I don't time have for...!?

Casper: no. I get it. Lets hurry before someone else drops.

Mason: ... FUCK!! Get everyone to search their clothes! Look all over the castle grounds and don't overlook anything! Move!

The guards rush off to look for more scales.

Mason: shit!! This is my fault. How did I let this happen?! John, I need you to stay with Sicily and my brother. Don't let them out of your sight.

John: what!? Oh no. I'd rather not be in...!?

Mason drops to a knee as he would to a king.

Mason: please. I need all the help I can get and you have the most knowledge by far. I'll give you anything in return.

John:... Ugh...

Rexar: there is no way you can say no to that.

John:*whisper* I know, right? Okay, okay. Get up. I get it. I'm going.

John rushes to Sicily and the king while Casper and Mason search for the scales.

John makes it to finds the king and Sicily still safe until he spots Lieta prowling behind them. John pounces past them and grabs two decoration weapons from the wall and throws them to Sicily and the king.

John: you two might want to run.

Sicily: why should we listen to the bastard that brought that here?!

John: there is no time to argue with you! Move!!

The king grabs Sicily and they take off.

John: for crying out loud, what is wrong with her?!

Lieta jumps at John. He tumbles back, barely dodging her attack, and takes off behind her down the hall. She follows after. Soon John is on all four as he runs faster and faster to gain distance. Before losing him, Lieta screeches throwing John's senses off balance, forcing him to drop to the ground as he scampered behind a pillar around the corner.

The lights were dim. It was hard to see anything in the room they were in. Lieta prowls the room glancing intently at each corner of the room. Every now and then, she would pause and hiss in pain. She's close now. John covers his mouth to hide his heavy breathing. Suddenly, a prickly sound starts echoing through his ears. He pears out into the dim room to find Lieta changing shape and size. She looks monstrous. Her lower half was that of a large beast and her tail like a rats. Her head grew larger as her teeth dripped a thick venom from the tips. She was hideous. This was her true form. Vexisma Bial.

She was growing impatient. John knew if he rushed out the room now she'd notice. He was trapped. Suddenly, he felt a pull from his chest; his heart. Something calling to him through all of the fear welling inside him. He remembers this feeling from his meditation. He was in the room that called to him. A part of Rexar's stone.

Rexar: what's wrong?

John: *gasp*!?

John clasps both his hands over his mouth to keep from shouting, but to no avail. Lieta heard his gasp and heads for his pillar. She looks around it, but John is gone. He had somehow scaled the pillar to the ceiling boards, completely out of her reach.

Rexar: can't you just drop her from here?

John: *whisper* if I knew how, I would have told one of the guardians how to do it. I am not getting near that thing.

Rexar: so now what are you gonna do? If she can't die, what's the point?

John: no. She can. I know it has something to do with those scales I found earlier.

Lieta lets out a screech again. But not as painful to the ears this time.

John: see she does get hurt but only when they're broken. Instead of being the decoy, I should be out elsewhere looking for scales. I'm just passing through, for Pete's sake.

Rexar: anyways. You noticed something earlier. What was it?

John: remember when I said I found something of yours last night? It's in here. I'm not sure where though.

Rexar: oh! How convenient! Lets get it.

John: I am not moving from this spot.

Rexar: what?! What the hell are you on about? Why?

John: because she's looking right at me.

Below them, Lieta stared up at john and stretches as far her body could reach standing on her hind legs with a wide-eyed, large, dripping smile on her face. Rattling hisses echoing from her throat.
