Chereads / The Coward's Journey / Chapter 14 - Trouble Upon Entry

Chapter 14 - Trouble Upon Entry

John has finally escaped from Camus La Verse. He has to find a place to lay low for a while to rest before he continued his original journey to find and collect the remaining stone chips.

John fights his way through the mountain valley and finds himself in what looks like a small town. It was still too early for daylight, but he could see a tall bell tower in the distance. It was somewhat disconcerting. He walks to a nearby inn ready to walk in, until he gets yanked by the belt of his armor to a back alley.

What the hell do you think your doing, you moron!?

John: what!? Who has the balls to...!? Who are you!?

A small dirty girl in raggedy clothes holds him back in the shadows. She glares at him like he did something wrong.

Girl: ha ha. Very funny. What the heck is wrong with you all of a sudden?! I know you like roaming the daytime, but now's not one of those times, man! I thought I told you this already!

John: whoa! Back up a little. I don't know you for one, and two this my first time in this town.

Girl: what?! Don't kid yourself! You know exactly who I am, you cocky fuck!

John: okay, seriously. What the hell are you on about? No. First, who do think I am?

Girl: huh?

The girl looks at John closer, but she doesn't seem convinced that he doesn't know her.

Girl: what do you... Hm? Hang on open your mouth.

John: say what?! Ah! Ahhh!?

The girl opens his mouth and examines his teeth. She pokes at the spaces where his k-9s should be.

Girl: you... Your really not him? He must have taken a job then.

John: who the hell do I look like!? Seriously!?

Girl: shh!! Get back and stay low.

Dawn breaks as three guards march to the inn John was going to earlier. They knock and A small faun woman opens the door to them.

Faun: yes? Ah. Sir Hensley. How can I help you?

Hensley: morning, miss Caya. Time to pay your taxes. The usual five hundred scallos.

Cats: just a moment.

She closes the door and returns moments later with a large sack, then hands it to the Guard.

Girl: what the...? Taxes aren't due until Friday. What is Hensley thinking?

Hensley: thank you very much. Oh! "The Red Fury" jumped to the governors office today. Be sure to use your crystal to call us if you spot him in the area. We know his around here somewhere.

Caya:... I'll be sure to do so.

They leave and Caya closes her door.

Girl: that's Gen! So he is on a job? Then who the heck are you?!

John:... That's what I've been telling you. I'm John. Who are you?

Girl:... Maini. Maini Chemroy.

John: now why should I be hiding?

Maini: ... You look like Gen. My friend. Like an exact replica. Like twins or something.

John: unless he's some kind of doppelganger, that is highly unlikely.

Maini: wha? Whatever. Come on we gotta hide you.

John: what for?

Maini: I'll explain on the way. Come on, red.

John: John. It's John! Wait up! Wait for me.

John follows Maini through the darker parts of the alley.

Much later in the day, Caya sat in her inn behind the front counter and drinks a small vial. The front door opens and Sicily walks in with a large bag. Caya looks to her and pulls out a booklet of keys.

Caya: welcome. How long well you be staying, miss?

Sicily: Sicily Hale. Royal knight from Camus La Verse.

Caya: I see. Welcome to Decorum East, Sillia.

Sicily: thank you. I think I'll stay three nights. A small room is fine.

Caya: very well, Ms. Hale.

Caya hands Sicily a key and Sicily gives her a small pouch of money.

Caya: may I ask for your reason of travel?

Sicily: hunting. A wicked escaped from our kingdom and I am to find and kill him. If you see a red haired boy about my age come through here, please let me know if you see him. Trust me he's not hard to miss.

Caya:... I understand.

Sicily heads upstairs into her room and closes the door.

Caya: another red haired boy?
