Chereads / The Coward's Journey / Chapter 7 - Caution

Chapter 7 - Caution

John Reh had just come to the city of Camus La Verse, met the king, was given a title to make his journey easier, and finally, learned of his new abilities and how to control them. On the night of his first stay in the castle of Camus, John had noticed something strange calling to him through his newly developed powers.

It is now morning. John had been up all night meditating, wondering were the strange urge was coming from focusing all his power in mapping the castles layout alone. His focus is suddenly disturbed by a voice outside his door. He gets up and opens it to find a guard talking to Sicily next to his door. She was sitting on the floor curled in a ball.

John: what the...? Was she here all night?

Guard: uh!? Uuh... She wasn't in her room this morning when the maidens went to get her ready.

John: ready for what?

Guard: uh, right. I was sent to get you for that. We will be getting you ready as well for the festival.

John: o-Kay.

John looks to Sicily who still sits by the door. He steps in front of her, leans down, and smacks her in the head. The guard looks at him in shock.

Sicily: ouch! Wha?!

John: get up, princess. You're needed in your room. And yes, I did hit you. You can tattle on me later. Hey, guard should I put something on or...

Guard: come as you are. Please.

John: coming. Uh... Hang on. Umm... Rexar?

Sicily: who?

The twin tailed cat trots out of the room and climbs up John to his shoulders and he follows the guard.

Sicily: where that cat come from? Hey! Wait up!

They enter a small room at the end of the hall. To find the king speaking to a dark eyed beauty draped in white from head to toe. He seemed bashful around her. He sees them enter the room.

King: ah. Here they are. Not fighting with him, I see, Sicily. Where'd you get the cat?

John: he's always been around. I just figured out how to make him visible.

King: a medium?! At your age? You know what? I won't argue. Does he have a name?

John: Rexar.

King: he's big on you.

John: that he is.

Rexar: I'm actually quite small compared to my normal form. But thanks.

Sicily: and who might this be uncle.

King: ah. Yes this is... A friend of your fathers. Madam Lieta. Apparently they've known each other for a quite a while.

Sicily: it's a pleasure to meet you, miss.

Lieta: the pleasure is mine, my dear.

John felt an uncomfortably cold chill slither down his spine as the woman talked. He felt something off.

Lieta: and you as well, young man. May I say, you are quite a handsome.

She reaches out to take Johns hands. His began to react the closer she got, so he snatch his hands away as if his life was in danger. The room grows silent with shock.

John: I'm sorry, but I don't think I should be touching you.

She doesn't argue and instead gives him a curious smile, then takes a few steps back. The king breaks the silence and calls everyone's attention to get ready for the festival. John was sent to a bathroom to wash up while Sicily stayed to get pampered.

After awhile john returns to find the room empty again except for Lieta, the king, and a guardian. The guardian sees him and approaches him with a hefty yet exhausted smile. John felt the same creeping sensation he got from Lieta the closer he came.

Guardian: Evening. You must be the young traveler Casper spoke of. I am Mason Hale, brother to the king and Sicily's father.

When Mason reach out to John to shake his hand, John slipped both arms behind his back by instinct.

John: uh... Hello. John Reh. It's a pleasure.

Mason: what's the matter? You act like I'm gonna rip your arms off or something. Remember a man must never show fear to anyone or anything. Cowardice is an obvious sign of weakness.

John: I'll keep that in mind. But, I'm just going to tell you what I told miss Lieta. Something just tells me not to touch you.

Mason: oh? And why is that?

Before John could answer, he sees Lieta reaching out to touch the kings shoulders. He reacts on impulse.

John: you majesty.

She pulls back immediately.

King: hm? Oh right we should really be going. Come on, you two.

Mason: of course. I want to keep talking with you, John. You seem like a smart boy.

John: ... Alright. After you.

They head out.
