Chapter 12 - Golems and Glasses

"Pleh! This food is so bland! Geez, you would think in a world where you can grow plants at-will they would have some good cafeteria food!" I exclaimed

"Yeah! We should sign a petition!" Yomo agreed, looking serious.

"Unfortunately, it's plant Eneru's fault. When you grow a plant with Eneru, it becomes bland." Devin sighed.

"You guys should just hunt for yourself," Vincent said being smug

"Take your own advice, you are eating the same thing as us!"

Vincent looked embarrassed but didn't respond.

"Anyway, Devin, you got an alchemy kit as a reward right? what have you been doing with it?"

"See for yourself."

Devin pulled a red vial from his bag and poured a bit onto the table, it quickly solidified into a foam that would easily seal against the wind and the cold.

"I call this stuff, "foam seal"

"Could you have possibly picked a more obvious name?" I sighed

"Probably not."

After a bit of chatting it was time to go to each of our respective sub-affinity masters. Teo followed me to Professor James's classroom. Teo and Prof. James were the only other golemancers in the school so the large classroom would be almost empty, if not for the huge piles of scrap.

"Alright, kiddos! The first thing you need to know about Golemancy is that you need the right husk before anything else. The second thing you will need is extensive knowledge of the runic alphabet, runes like Moten and Lov are essential to any golemancer. The Last thing you will need is to be well versed in engineering in order to build a proper golem. Now, I can see on your face that you have questions, but I would like to remind you that you have been at school merely a week, I don't expect you to know everything right off the bat."

At his last words, I started to berate Professor James with questions.

"Four questions. First, what are those runes you mentioned? Second, what kind of engineering will we be doing? Third, what is a husk? And last, where does a golem get its power?"

'If it's from its user, then this sub affinity is useless 'cause I've got a limited range'

"Those runes are Motion and Light, as in not heavy you will use them on heavy golems that can't move under their own power. Runes use up power from the golem so use them sparingly.

You will be doing mostly biomimicry in the form of recreating muscles, sensory organs, and vein-like cooling systems. A husk is the body of a golem without its power source, a spirit core that has been separated from a corpse."

'Gruesome.'

"So does every natural on Rengi have to deal with the insides of their peers or is it just me?"

"For now you won't have to, I have two normal spirit cores for each of you, you will not get any more cores than that though, they are expensive."

Teo looked like he wanted to say something.

"Hey, Teodor! What is your question." Professor James clearly noticed too

'His real name is Teodor? really?'

"I was um... wondering, um... how do you um... control a-a golem?" Teo looked flustered by his real name.

"Excellent question! When you insert the free spirit core, you empty your spirit core's Eneru into it, imprinting the golem to you. Then it will simply follow your voice commands. Be warned though, you cannot control a golem with a higher level spirit core than you, it will simply resist and carry out its own will."

"Good thing I've got a greater spirit, I would hate to only be able to control dumb, mindless golems" Teo seems to have calmed down.

A few moments of silence passed and James led us to the scrap piles and taught us about the importance of precision in golem manufacturing; it wasn't long before the bell rang.

"Wanna play Tana after school Teo?"

"Sure, but I wanna do some studying first, meet me in the courtyard an hour after school, ok?"

"Ok! Got it! See you later!" I called out as I ran back to my dorm.

The tree outside the dorm room had finally been dealt with, it was still there, but now it was normal-sized and normal-shaped. We had a free period for 1 hour right now and I decided to use it to learn about enchantment because if I'm to save this world with engineering, I'm going to need to know what I have to work with. I sat down under the cedar tree and opened "The Complete Beginner's Guide to Enchanting"

After reading for a while it became apparent what the paper was for, the paper was essentially the instructions on what the enchantment would do, written in runes. For example, if an enchantment zoomed the view of the user it would have runic instructions that would either read the mind of the user or get their voice input, then take that data and zoom to the user's desired setting.

It very much resembled a cutting-edge technology in my old world, "The Powered Calculator (TM)." I had to learn the meaning of a bunch of runes asap.

I grabbed a branch off a tree and turned it into the frame of a set of glasses. Then I walked up to Teacher and asked:

"Can you give me extra lessons in runes, I need to know more before I can put a plan in motion."

"Hmm... what kind of plan?"

"It involves golemancy, give me the lessons and you will know all about it."

"Tell me, I'll give you some lessons, and if you do and it's not something that will destroy your dorms, and I will oversee your process if I choose to let you."

"So here's the plan, I'm going to take this," I gestured to the frame I built a minute ago "and turn it into an assistant to any golemancer out there, I'll fill you in with the rest of my plan later."

"You are quite the intriguing child, when did you suddenly become an enchanter?"

"You could say my talents stretch from world to world." I said mock arrogantly
