Four years ago,
"Can you pass me the glass?" Charlie asks.
I extend my hand past her to pass him the glass. She is sitting beside me or should I say beside charlie.
She is Charlie's friend or should I say girlfriend.
She is pretty to be honest.
Two things about her is making me upset.
1. I like her.
2. She is probably Charlie's girlfriend.
And there is one thing I can do right now.
Shut up my mind.
I didn't see her properly the other day. Well , Charlie didn't introduce her to me that day. So yeah I really didn't pay attention. I don't even know her name yet.
They just got here now.
Charlie looks kinda tired , drinking a glass of water. They literally came here running. No wonder Charlie's breathing heavily. But why doesn't she look tired though. She came all the way running here too. Maybe Charlie is getting older. Why am I thinking such stupid things?!
I pass Charlie the water bottle instead of pouring it in a glass. He glances at me.
"Dude, I need you to become my sister's tutor", he says while pointing at the girl whom I thought to be his girlfriend.
Okay that... I didn't expect that. I imagine things a lot nowadays. I should just stop doing that.
Last time he said he would bring a girl to our farewell party. What does bringing a girl to a party mean even? And when they came, the way he talked to her and the way he took care of her made me think like that. I can't blame my mind for that, right? Or maybe I was over thinking. My chain of thoughts gets interrupted by the touch of her hand. It's soft but cold.
"Charlie is saying something. Are you even listening? Or are you just dreaming, retard?"
Damn! That's a rude thing to say to your tutor. Wait I haven't agreed yet.
Though I know the answer is positive.
Before I could say anything she turned to Charlie. "He agreed", she smiles.
How does she even know that?
What? Am I that obvious?
Are you some kind of Fortune teller or do you read people's mind?
"Yeah, I read people people's mind", she leans forward to me.
Wait what?
Should I freak out?
Am I dreaming?
I notice her eyes. It was deep brown a while ago but now it's kinda light.
"What the hell are you kidding with me for?" I drop my head into the palms of my hands.
Charlie take a seat beside me and tells me to calm down. But I can't. How can I calm down when someone's reading my mind? Is that even possible? Of course not. This isn't some novel or drama.
"I can read every people's mind in this room", she says.
I shrug it off.
Charlie wrap his arms around my shoulder. "Don't freak out. Its the truth. And..."
"What? There's more truth?" I ask him. "And I'm not freaking out".
"She's a vampire", he says.
Silence.
That's hard to consume but at the same time it seems pretty funny to me. I don't even know what to say.
Is this even real? Maybe they are just joking around, for Charlie knows how I have been living for the past few years.
A dull life.
Should I stay or leave?
Did they eat something wrong?
I should just leave them for now. Maybe they are just drunk.
I grab my phone and call for a cab before I change my mind.
What if she's telling the truth? I mean, yeah, I can also just play along.
Honestly I don't know if I really want to go back.
But I like her.
I can't just leave this place just because of some stupid pranks.
What is wrong with me?
I walk inside. I see her smiling at me.
"I knew you were gonna come", she whisper.
"Yeah. Miss vampire".
She groans.
She is pretty indeed.
Sh*t! She can read my mind.
I turn towards Charlie. "What do you want me to do for her?"
"Just help her to behave well. To act like a normal person instead of acting weird".
"She's not weird. She's just straight forward".
"You don't know her yet, Ed", he winks.
"But why me?" I ask quietly.
"You're the most reliable person I have ever met. I think you get that I just can't share this with anyone. I need you to take care of her for now. I'm sure you do have some kinda knowledge about vampires. You will manage somehow", he says hesitantly.
"What? Knowledge about vampires? You must be joking. It seems more like I need to babysit her from now on?" I whisper.
"Kinda", he says with a stern look.
She is staring at me which is making me uncomfortable. I close my eyes and exhale. For now, I'm going to play along with it and watch how far can they take it. But they do look serious about it.
"Sure", I say.
Charlie seems confused. Of course he can't believe that I just agreed to that so easily.
"Is there something you need?", he asks.
"No. Why?" I ask.
She laughs. We both stare at her.
"He likes me. That's why he agreed".
She continues to stare at me.
"Can you not just read my mind? I will appreciate that." I'm nervous, cause whatever she is doing or how she is doing I don't have a clue of that. Is she carrying some kind of mind reading device? Probably.
She tilts her head.
My effort of making her understand is completely in vain. I can feel that.
"Told you she's weird". Charlie hits my back.
He got a call so he decided to leave me with this vampire girl.
I'm quiet. Can't really figure out what to say anymore. So is she.
I think I should I start the conversation. It's getting awkward. Maybe with a hi.
"Hi", she smiles.
Mind reader.
"I haven't asked yet. What's your name?" I try not to look into her eyes though I know she can read my mind anyways.
I can't help it. Her eyes are beautiful.
She looks me straight in the eyes. "Elora Noelle".
Nice name.
She squeezes my hands and releases a sigh. "I want to spend the weekend with you". Her voice somewhat sound tensed.
"Okay". I nod.
Its evening already. I got some work to do. I grab her hand and walk straight for the front door.
We don't speak the entire way back to her house until she turns and waves goodbye at the edge of her driveway.
I glance across the street.
I look up at the sky.
I focus on my feet.
I continue to walk. I'm hoping to learn everything there is to know about her this weekend.
I sit on my couch. I open up my laptop to continue writing my novel. Before that I text Elora. We exchanged our numbers on the way.
She is calling me now.
I pick up.
- HEYYY, ED.
Well that was loud.
- Hi Elora
- MY ROOMMATE JUST GOT INSANEE!!
- You're literally shouting.
- WHATT!! I CAN'T HEAR YOU
Crap! My ear.
- What happened?
- SHE GONNA DIEE!!!
Wait what!
I call a cab and rush to her apartment.
As soon as the door opens I see a drunk girl who's literally sobbing. Elora is staring at me.
"What happened?" I ask her.
"Ava's boyfriend just dumped her. She came home an hour ago. Totally wasted of course. I tried to stop her from drinking more. But she ain't listening to me. She's gonna die. She has hypoglycemia. Please help me to take her to the hospital", she says while pulling Ava up.
I help her as we walk towards the front door.
I'm sitting on the floor of the hallway, next to Ava's hospital room. I watch as Elora comes the room. She take a seat beside me.
"She will be okay. Don't worry", I assure her.
She nods, pressing her lips together. She glances at me. "What were you doing?"
"I was just sitting in my couch with my laptop and you called me".
"You're working on a novel or something?" she arches her eyebrow.
I shrug.
"I'm sorry. I can't just stop doing so", she gives me a pity face.
I nod as I don't mind even if she does.
She starts talking about Ava and her boyfriend. I don't know what she is saying.
I hate that her voice does things to my body that no other voice could ever do.
But I love it too . I really do.
