7:00 AM
The girl's alarms went off in unison. Martha and Lola both groggily turned it off, and sat in bed for another ten minutes. Ruby on the other hand, got out of bed, grabbed her uniform and toiletries bag and headed to the bathroom. The uniform was composed of a white colored shirt, a red and silver tie, a black jumper to go over, and on that jumper was the letters 'H' and 'B' monogrammed one fancy cursive. It also had a grey skirt and knee-length grey socks to go with it. Quickly slipping the uniform on, she brushed out her messy hair, brushed her teeth, the usual morning stuff.
At around 7:30 they headed downstairs for breakfast. Martha munched on her toast and then asked, "What do you have for your first class?" "I have English," Ruby stated. "Science," Lola said before taking a sip of her orange juice. "Guess we'll be going our separate ways then, I have math," Martha said bitterly. "What about second period?" Ruby asked. "History," Lola replied. "Same for me," "I have history too, so we'll at least have that class all together." Taking the last few bites of their food, they each ran off to get to their separate classes.
Ruby nervously walked into the classroom, trying to reassure herself that her first day would go well, that after all, it was English, her favorite subject. Sitting at a desk in the middle of the classroom, she decided that it would be a nice spot as it wasn't too far away from the board to where she couldn't see but also not upfront next to the teacher. The room quickly filled with other students and soon the teacher walked in.
She was short, pretty slim, but had a kind face. Strawberry blonde hair and soft brown eyes, she reminded Ruby of Miss Honey from Matilda. "Good morning, everyone," she happily greeted, "My name is Miss Jenson, and I'll be teaching you English this year!" She is way too peppy, especially since she's teaching twelve and thirteen year-olds, Ruby thought with amusement. The class went exactly as she had expected it to, the classic "ice-breaker" games and the "What's your name?" And "What's your favorite color?" Ruby hated those, and honestly she knew people probably couldn't care less about her favorite color, and well, she didn't care about other people's favorite color.
She kept looking at the clock, wishing it could go faster so she could meet up with Martha and Lola. Finally, the bell rang, Ruby picked up her books and made a beeline for the door. Spotting Martha and Lola, she speedily made her way through the crowd to them, and stopped to catch her breath. "Hey guys!" She said. They walked into the classroom, picking a spot where they could each be close together, Ruby's desk in the middle, Martha on the right of her and Lola on the left.
The teacher was a bit on the older side, but seemed quite mellow. His name was Mr. Justine, and instead of doing the stupid "ice-breakers" and get-to-know you stuff, he passed out a packet for them to read, on the American Revolution, and said to read it with the people sitting next to you and that they'd be discussing it in class the next week.
Eventually lunch time rolled around, the cafeteria buzzing with kids all over the place, and the trio got their food and sat at their usual table. The lunch was adequate, consisting of grilled cheese and tomato soup. As they were eating, two girls walked by. One girl with dirty blonde hair, who walked around as if she owned the place, and the other trailing behind her, was short and stubby with super long hazel hair. Seeing this sight, Martha rolled her eyes and sighed. Ruby taking notice, asked, "What? Do you know them or something?" "Oh I know them alright. Blondie over there thinks she's better than everyone, she's not, everyone hates her, yet she doesn't seem to catch on to that, and she's the most over dramatic person I have ever met." Martha spat with annoyance. "What's her name?" "Annie Joseph," "And the girl behind her?" "Ellie Loyd, we used to be friends, till she started hanging around Annie. Turned into a brat like her and hasn't looked back since." "Yikes. I'm sorry," Ruby said apologetically. "The real person you should feel sorry for is for Annie herself. Her mom is one of those soccer moms. Saw her before, had the haircut and everything." Lola said giggling.
They laughed, and Martha said, "Does she want to speak to the manager?" Ruby snorted and said, "Let's just hope she gets her vaccines," Lola retorted, "It's no wonder she's got that attitude, probably comes in the bloodline, generation to generation."
The day went by fast, and soon the girls were getting ready for bed. Ruby was brushing her hair, lost in her thoughts. My parents were right, I've made two actually good friends, let's just hope I keep them. Martha noticed Ruby spacing out and snapped in front of her saying, "Ruby! Earth to Ruby! Hey!" Ruby blinked and came back to reality. "Oh, sorry!" She mumbled.
"So what did you guys think of today?" Lola asked curiously.
"I think today went surprisingly well," Ruby said. "Meh, it was decent," Martha replied airily.
Ruby checked her phone and saw a few texts from her parents, asking, "How was your first day?" And "did you make any friends?" Ruby responded with, "My day was fine, and I made friends," Her parents were delighted to hear that, and they texted their good nights. Ruby picked up her book, started reading, whilst Lola wrote in her diary, and Martha sketched.
The room was quiet and the only things heard were the occasional flip of a page, scribbling of a pen, and the scratching of a pencil. After a bit they shut the lights off, and Ruby snuggled into her bed. This may just be a good school year, she thought happily before falling asleep.
