Chereads / The Room at the End of the Hall / Chapter 2 - Day of Terror

Chapter 2 - Day of Terror

I woke up to the sound of someone walking down the hall. I slowly opened my eyes and looked towards my door. It creaked open, gram popped her head into the room. "Are you awake Jacob?" She asked. I forced myself to sit up. "I'm awake." My voice was raspy and quiet. "Today is your day to choose what we do." I nodded and stood up. I stretched my arms over my head and yawned. "What's there to do?" I asked. "Well, there's a shopping center. We can look around there." I rubbed my eyes and ruffled my hair. "Sure, sounds like a plan." She smiled and closed the door behind her. I quickly grabbed clothes to wear for the day. A plain red shirt, and some dark blue jeans. I tied my shoelaces and grabbed my phone. I grabbed my hair brush and fixed my hair, and quickly brushed my teeth. I exited the bedroom and made my way down the stairs. I saw gram looking down at her phone, it seemed like she was texting someone. "Ready gram?" I asked. She jumped a little and quickly put her phone away. "Ready, are you?" I nodded and smiled. She walked out the door and I followed right behind, making sure to close the door behind me. Gram turned and locked the door quickly then continued towards her car. "Do you wanna drive?" She asked me. I had gotten my drivers license a couple weeks ago, I had been pretty proud that I got an almost perfect score. Dad had promised we'd go car shopping once summer was over. I was ecstatic to finally drive my own car. "Sure, I can show off my driving skills." She chuckled as she handed me the keys. I climbed into the drivers seat and started the car. "Head down the street, second light take a left." I nodded and backed the car out of the driveway. Gram turned the radio on, a country song I'd never heard began playing. "Have they added shops to the mall?" I asked as I stopped at the first red light. "They added a couple, though I can't remember what they added." I nodded my head. "Hey gram, why don't you ever go into the room at the end of the hall?" I couldn't help but ask. I began driving again, I saw gram shuffle out of the corner of my eye. "It's just an empty room, no reason to go in it." I took the left turn. "I could help you add furniture, paint it. We could turn it into a fun room for you." I smiled. "No!" I jumped from her sudden outburst. "Sorry, it was just an offer." I heard her sigh, she gently placed her hand on my arm. "I'm sorry, I just don't want you going in there. I know it doesn't seem fair for you to not know, but please. Trust me, don't go in there ever." It sounded like she was about to cry, I could feel my heart tighten. I never meant to hurt her, I just wanted to give an offer. "I promise." I told her. She rubbed my arm, we remained quiet the rest of the drive. I parked the car close to the front of the mall. Gram and I got out the car and entered the mall. There was surprising a lot of people, I looked around for a place to go. "How about there?" I pointed to a clothes store for men. "Okay, let's go." We walked over and entered the store. "Welcome! Is there anything I can help you two with?" An older man asked from behind the counter. "Just looking." I responded and began observing. "I remember when you were too shy to speak to the store workers." Gram pointed out. I chuckled. It was true, I used to be extremely shy. I still am, but not as bad as I used to be. "Yup, you kept losing me in stores cause I was so quiet and would wonder off." She laughed. "You'd be a good spy, in a blink of an eye you just disappear." I smiled, it felt good to remember the good memories. I looked through the shirts, I didn't need any but it was nice to look through some. I picked out a plain grey shirt. "You should get some that have logos on them." Gram commented. I looked deeper into the stores, most of the shirts that had pictures on it weren't the kinda pictures I liked. They weren't the most appropriate pictures either. "How about a different store?" My grandmother offered, I shrugged. "Sure, why not." We exited the store and continued walking, looking around for a better store. Suddenly gram pulled my arm, I looked over at her. She was pointing somewhere, I followed her finger. She was pointing at a store I'd never seen before. "You know that store?" I asked, she shook her head. "No, it looks new. Maybe they'll have something." I shrugged and we made our way over. I held the door open and my grandmother walked in. "Welcome." I heard a female employee say. I was about to respond, but gram beat me to it. "Addy?" She asked, I looked at her confused. "Mrs Bell?" The woman knew my grandmothers last name, I was completely lost. Suddenly a girl around my age stepping out in front of us. She ran up and hugged gram, I looked at them confused. "Oh Addy! It's been too long!" They both laughed. I rubbed the back of my neck awkwardly. "Addy, this is my grandson, Jacob." I stuck my hand out. "Nice to meet you." I said, she shook my hand. "So you're the infamous Jacob I've heard so much about?" I looked over at gram. "You talk about me?" Gram smiled widely at me. "You two would get along great!" She completely ignored my question. I could already see what she was trying to do. "It's nice to see you again Mrs Bell." Gram smiled at Addy now. "It's lovely seeing you too, when did you get this job?" I slowly started backing away. "I got it a couple weeks ago, it's actually really nice." I backed up far enough to were I couldn't hear them anymore. I sighed and turned around, I began scanning shirts. I looked at a black shirt that had a colorful peace sign on the center. There was one on the wall that had a green alien head on it. I walked over to the jackets. Some were jean jackets, some looked heavy, some looked light and fluffy. One caught my eye, it was a dark red thin jacket. I took it off it's hanger and put it on, I turned around and there was a long mirror. I looked at myself, I grinned at the new look. "It suits you well." I jumped a little and looked to my side. Addy was leaning on a piller and smiling at me. "Thanks." I quickly took the jacket off and put it back. "Your grandmother is very sweet." I chuckled. "She's certainly kind, how much has she told you about me?" Addy laughed. "Mainly that you're single and a good guy." I rubbed the back of my neck. "I figured as much, I'm sorry about that." She shook her hands in front of her. "No no, I find it sweet how much she cares about you. Plus it makes my day all the more interesting." I laughed. "She's very loving, I'm great full to have her in my life." Addy looked towards the front of the store, I saw gram looking at shirts. For a split second I thought I saw a twinkle in Addy's eyes. "How'd you two meet?" I asked. "Your grandmother found me walking down the street. I was homeless. She let me live in her house for a little while until I got my bearings. I got a job and tried paying half of the rent, but she refused. Finally I bought an apartment room and moved out. We've stayed connected ever since." My mouth hung open, and my eyes were wide. I always knew my grandmother was nice, but I had no idea she'd done this. "Wow, that's pretty awesome." I said, Addy giggled and nodded her head. "I'm super great full that I met her." I couldn't help but smile at Addy. It was fascinating and wonderful to see someone so appreciative of a simple act. She looked over at me and I quickly looked away. Gram walked over to me. "Here's a shirt." I looked at the shirt. "That's a cool picture." I said. The picture was a bunch of flowers that made the outline of wings. "Do you like it?" I looked up at gram and grinned. I turned and looked at Addy. "How much for the shirt?" I asked. "Ten dollars." Addy lead us to a cash register, I pulled my wallet out and handed Addy fifteen dollars. "Keep the change." I said while grabbing the now bagged shirt. "Thank you, have a good day." We waved bye to Addy as we left. Right away gram smiled at me. "So? Was she cute?" I laughed and shook my head. "Gram, not happening." She clicked her tongue and looked forward. "Well I'm trying." I shook my head. The rest of the day we walked around the mall and talked about anything and everything. Finally we were ready to head back home. I put the bags into the backseat and jumped into the drivers seat. I started the car and began driving back towards the house. "That was fun." Gram said. I nodded my head. "That was super fun." I agreed. "What do you wanna do tomorrow?" She asked, I shrugged. "That can be something we discuss tomorrow." Gram hummed at my comment, we listened to the radio for the rest of the ride. I parked the car in the driveway and turned it off. "I'll get the bags." I got out and retrieved the shopping bags, gram opened the front door for me. I placed the bags on the counter and put the car keys in the bowl near the front door. "Here's your shirt." Gram handed me the bag that held my shirt. "Thanks." I took it upstairs and into my room. I took the shirt out of the bag and put it on the desk. I decided I'd wear it tomorrow. I exited the bedroom and walked out into the hall. Suddenly I felt the back of my shirt be tugged. I turned around expecting gram to be standing there. Nobody is standing there. I look around, there's nothing that could've caught onto my shirt. I shrugged and turned back around to go down the stairs. Suddenly it felt like a thousand pounds had been thrown at me at full force. I was knocked off my feet and landed on my back with a hard thud. "Jacob?!" I heard gram yell my name, but the wind had been knocked out from my lungs and I couldn't respond. I laid there for what felt like ages, suddenly I felt gram shaking my shoulder. "Oh my gosh! Are you okay Jacob?" She helped me sit up. "Ya, I'm fine." I looked up. "Wait, how did I get here?" I was just at the top of the stairs, now the stairs were all the way at the end of the hall. "Let's Get you down stairs." Gram helped me stand up, I stumbled back but caught myself on the wall behind me. I looked back, my hand was firmly pressed against the door with the golden doorknob. I quickly brought my hand away from the door. Gram helped me walk down the hall and get down the stairs. "Sit on the couch." I did as she said and sat down, my back already feeling tender. "Here, bend forward a little." I did, gram lifted my shirt a little. I could feel the sudden coldness from ice. I sucked a breath through my teeth. "My chest." I said. Gram took the ice off my back. "Show me where." I lifted the front of my shirt, before I could even point to where her eyes went wide. "What?" I asked. I looked down, two large hand shaped bruises began forming on my chest. "Hold on." Gram ran off and came back with her phone in her hand. She took a photo. "Here, hold this on your bruises." She handed me a bag of ice, I gently placed it on the hand prints. Gram walked off, I could hear her dialing a number on her phone. She exited the house, I leaned back and groaned. Then I heard it, the clicking. It was faster now, but I knew exactly where it was coming from. My heart slowed, my breathing became deep. I could feel a cold sweat forming on my neck. The clicking of the doorknob started getting faster, and faster. Until it sounded like the door was going to break off it's hinges. Then is suddenly stopped, and gram walked back into the house. She walked over to me and gave me a sad look. "Your parents are going to come get you soon. Too much is going on, I don't like it." I wanted to disagree, I wanted to say I was fine. That it was nothing, but I couldn't talk. I could only nod my head. "How about you go get some sleep." I nodded my head again and carefully walked up the stairs. My hands shook violently, my eyes stayed glued to the door. It was still. I ran into my room and shut the door behind me. I climbed into my bed and wrapped the covers around me. I couldn't sleep, I just watched my bedroom door. Scared, that something was going to come into my room and hurt me.
