I tried to put my hand on her head, but unfortunately it went right through it. Even still, I could feel the warmth, which was much more than a normal human being should have.
"She has a very high fever." I whispered. She started twitching after that. I patted her back slowly, this time finally able to touch her, and she calmed down.
"I can't believe no one is home!" Oliver sighed in frustration.
"Can't I help her anyhow?" I asked them with pleading eyes, hoping to get any ideas, any magical techniques of a ghost which can take her pain away.
"Should I... look for medicine?" Oliver asked unsure.
"Go ahead." I said.
"Just do not mess up the place too much, be careful." Ken told him
He nodded and left. I kept staring at her, while I continued to pat her. All I could think off was how to keep her safe. Today she is left all alone in this condition. What if one day that woman does not even hesitate to kill her. I did not want my daughter to become a ghost like me, no matter what. Thinking about her future scared me.
"I found nothing. There was a box of medicines, but there was no Tylenol." He shrugged apologetically. I remained quiet at that, and neither of them spoke after that.
After few moments, Ken decided to speak.
"There is something we can.... try. It won't bring down her fever, but it can make her more comfortable for her to rest properly."
"What?" I looked up at him, with all my attention. I would do anything at this point.
"Well, maybe we could calm down her nightmares, turn them into pleasant dreams?" He suggested.
I tilted my head not sure what he was trying to imply, "How will we do that?"
"There is this method called 'Dream Projection'. You can basically transfer yourself into anyone's dream. Their defenses are least when they are sleeping so it helps us to get inside their heads. It's similar like possessing, but here, instead of replacing their conscience you get to interact with it." He shrugged as he finished his explanation.
"That sounds wonderful, but I have never tried that before. What if I can't do that?" I voiced my concern.
"No you can't, but I can. Although I am not very good at it, I can take you there." He offered.
"Really!!" My eyes brightened up with delight. "Yes please! take me there with you. Thank you so much!" I may not always be able to protect her, but today i will. For today I will be her dreamcatcher.
"Hold on, the duration will be really less. Since I am taking you there, it will be even lesser. So you will have to do whatever you want to do within the time limit." I nodded at him. "Now, roughly speaking it should be five minutes, but I will be able to feel when our time will be about to be up, so I will notify you nevertheless."
"Okay, I got that. Lets do this." I affirmed nodding at him.
"I guess I am staying behind then. Be careful." Oliver gave us an encouraging smile.
Ken put his one hand on Momo's head and the my shoulder by the other Before I knew it I was standing in a vivid place, where the details were neither so clear nor believable. All the buildings in the background lacked window, and many people here had comical eyes, It looked funny and scary at the same time. However it did not seem to be the thing frightening Momo.
We were in the middle of a Park, so both of us looked around for Momo. After a while we spot her playing with her family, while she was surrounded by food in a tiffin boxes. Looked like she was having a picnic in her dreams. Even I was present there, so much filled with life and enjoying the moment.
It seemed so beautiful, then what was the scary part? I approached them and was standing right behind Momo. No one could see me here, I wondered how will we influence anything here, so I asked Ken about it, who was the only person who could perceive me and vice versa.
"It's her dream, only she can see you. Rest everyone here are fragments of her memory, of course with her own modifications. No building lacks windows like that." I nodded.
I focused on the mother daughter duo and smiled. It made me feel a certain ache in my heart, I realised what I left behind.
Suddenly out of nowhere, the dream-me slapped Momo tightly on her face. I was flabbergasted at the course of action she took. Soon her eyes turned blazing red and she herself turned into a black puddle of thick smoke.
She, or it, resembled a huge demon like thing. And that was what the nightmare was about. She was terrified of me, of this monster, and thus it was clearly reflected on her dream. She ran away as far as she could but the black demon always managed to catch her. I did not know what to doo at this moment, so I screamed!
"Hey, you ruthless monster!!" I shouted. Ken whose expression was filled with concern moment ago, looked at me like I have grown horns above my head. Both the monster and Momo turned and looked at me. Maybe because the monster was a creation of her conscience it noticed me too. I found a huge stone and around me and threw it at that monster. The smoke dissipated everywhere and it vanished for good.
I looked at her fondly, but she flinched away from me, because she was still scared of me. I tried talking from distance as to not spook her.
"I will not hurt you, I am here to protect you from the monster who looks like me." I was not completely wrong though, maybe not this dramatic, but that woman was a true monster.
"She did not look convinced, neither did she come to me, but she seemed much more relaxed."
"I think our time is up." Ken whispered from next to me.
"It's been five minutes already?" I asked him.
"No, but she is starting to wake up. I can feel her defenses building up gain. We can get trapped here if we don't leave now." He face was filled with panic. I nodded at him and both of us vanished from this place together.
