Chereads / Diary of the Dead / Chapter 16 - Coincidence

Chapter 16 - Coincidence

"Look at this, she is irregular in writing but the irregularity is limited to a few days. She missed few dates but otherwise she is quite consistent. Well this diary of her starts on April, and the last entry here is on June 25th 2020." Oliver said.

"The day before I died." I stated.

"Yes. Things related to your death could be something much bigger. It's turning out much complicated than I imagined it would be" Oliver sighed.

"So, what should we do now? I'm honestly out of options." I sigh. "Everytime I feel like I'm finally figuring things out, it gets even more complicated." I sighed.

"Well, how about what Ken suggested. Let's take a break. Cool of our minds a little and decide the next step." Oliver said casually.

"Wait, were you eavesdropping on us?" I asked him scrunching my eyebrows at him.

"Not really, I was standing behind you the whole time, you just didn't notice." he shrugged.

I smirked at that.

"So, shall we return now?" Ken asked us, as he felt the fight between us had resolved.

"I mean, we should right?" Oliver asked, unsure of it while he looked at me. I think he was worried that I'll be angry again like before.

"No" I said. They looked taken aback by my statement before I continued further with a smile. "It's sunset at the beach, let's Enjoy that before we leave."

"It's soothing isn't it?" Oliver mused

"Yeah" Ken smiled a said.

No one said anything after that, we just enjoyed each others company and the ambience. I was lucky to have found such friends who are going to such lengths to help me. I might not have been a lucky human, but I'm a lucky ghost. If they ever need me I'll reciprocate with pleasure.

After probably around twenty minutes it started getting dark. So we decided to head back. As we reached our car I was somewhat shocked to find a certain person there.

"Hello Oliver! You had a quite long ride I see" Carter smirked

"Carter,What brings you here?" Oliver asked coldly.

"Just passing by, what a nice coincidence to run into you." Carter smirked.

"Coincidence?Sure, if you say so, I definitely have no reason to not believe you" Oliver said with heavy loaded sarcasm.

"Well, I can ask you the same thing though. What brings you three here. You three look like a trio from a highschool club." Carter asked as he snorted. I rolled my eyes at that.

"Just passing by, just like you." Oliver said with a smirk.

"Maybe we should wait in the car." Ken said to me and without waiting for an answer dragged me to the car.

"Wait! " I tried stopping him but he didn't listen.

So once we were back in the car, I only had one option to satisfy my interest. So I eavesdropped.

"Unlike you I'm not a fool. I know that girl is looking for something, and I know you're trying to help her."

"Well, it's not like I figured out you followed me here so yeah, I'm clearly the dumb one." Oliver maintained that tone of sarcasm.

"Well, now that's everything out, why don't you tell me what's going on. I'll stop following you if you tell me." Carter offered.

"And if I don't, then what? What are you going to do? Sabotage us?" Oliver snapped.

"Oh no, don't misunderstand me, I was just offering my help. After all I am a much better detective than you ever were." Carter snickered at him.

"Well, almighty detective Carter, we don't want your help. Thank you for your bullshit offer" Oliver told him sarcastically and left.

Meanwhile I wondered why those two were like this. Maybe that's why Margaret tolerated Oliver, since even he despised him.

As soon as he came to the car we pretended as we're having our conversation, and not listening to him. However with his presence our car did get quieter though. Apart from the noise from engine, there was no other sound.

But it was a long ride home and we shouldn't be quiet all the way so I decided to break the silence.

"So, Oliver what do you do in your free time?" I blurted out the first thing I could think of. I think I heard Ken chuckle in the back.

For a moment Oliver took his eyes off the road and narrowed his eyes and stared at me, as I've lost my mind or something.

"Nothing, I don't have much free time." He said monotonously.

"Alright, being a ghost is quite busy, I get that." I said trying to joke, hoping it would cheer him up. Look at me trying to cheer someone else up as if I didn't have the most confusing day of my life, or my existence since I technically don't have any life.

"Well, when you have unfinished business, it can takes up a lot of your time." he said monotonously again and then sighed. "Look, I know you're trying to lighten the mood, but I am exhausted today. After having arguments with you, then Carter, I really don't want to engage in any conversation."

"Yes, plus he has been inside this 'Darryl' all day, it's a miracle he is even conscious, even for a ghost. I was in there for a while and I almost passed out" Ken said.

I don't know about Oliver but that cracked me up real good. I peeked at Oliver and it seemed even he was trying to suppress his smile, as I could make out that he pursed his lips. Count on Ken to cheer someone up. He was such a good friend and so hilarious.

"Hey, you're hurting his feelings." Oliver told Ken going along with his joke.

"He can hear me! My apologies Mr. Darryl, I was being worse than a random dude stealing your body constantly." He pretended to be shocked and sorry.

"Hey! That's not right." Oliver whined. "He knew me, I'm not some random dude."

"And does he know it's you who is borrowing his body?" he raised his eyebrows as he brought his face next to his seat.

"...No..." Oliver whispered. "Stop bothering me" he said him as he pushed his face back towards his seat with his right hand.

Of course Ken did not stop bothering him, and just like that the rest of the ride became a treat. He dropped us outside the woods then he drove away. I didn't know where though, it was already late. He was still possessing Darryl, so maybe he was dropping him off.

While returning I couldn't help but ask "Hey, if you don't mind me asking, how exactly Carter and Oliver are related. Is he Oliver's ancestor?"

"Technically no, since Carter never married anyone, I think. But I heard his little brother was his great great grandfather or something."

"Okay, why does he hate him so much? I mean they are quite similar. They are both good detectives, and from the same family. It's weird that they don't get along."

"I don't know, they were different after Oliver's death. Like he was literally a fan of Carter. We weren't so close back then due to obvious reasons." he told me heavily indicating Margaret. "Then suddenly after a few weeks Oliver left him, and since then he has behaved little coldly towards him."

"Did he ever tell you why?" I asked him.

"Not really, but I guess Carter turned out to be somehow different than he was expecting. They say never meet your heroes. There must be a reason they say that." He shrugged.

I wondered if the reason is same as Margaret. Then again there is no way I'll find out ever what her reason is even if Oliver tells me about his reason, so who knows.
