Chapter 1 - Dagger

PULLING MY jacket closer, I sighed happily when the cold breeze hit my face, making my dark shoulder-length hair blow as I close my eyes. The sunset has never ceased to disappoint me to calm my nerves. Just watching the sky turn orange was enough for my mind to go blank and enjoy it's persistent beauty.

Now, if only I can get higher.

Standing up, I started running through the field while the grass tickle my ankles. I feel free. I had always been the energetic one. People say that my smile made them smile, that my optimism was enough to energize them. I don't know if I should believe them, mostly because I don't understand the logic behind it, but nevertheless, I was happy to radiate such happy aura.

Far ahead, I saw a lost boulder in the middle of the field. So, I ran towards it and as I approach, It looked easy enough to climb so I did. When I reached the top, I immediately jumped. For a split second in the air, It felt like I was flying. Free, I'm free. When I landed, the soft grass catched me making a soft landing as I uncontrollably roll. I sighed, wincing.

Maybe that wasn't a good idea.

I landed on a rock.

Ouch.

Still lying on the grass, I looked at the now dark sky. I reached out, the wind hit my hand making me shiver but as I did, fireflies started appearing. Excited, I quickly sat up. Admiring the fireflies as they flew around me. This is freaking beautiful.

"Identify yourself," I frozed for a moment when I heard a voice beside me. Gulping, I looked to the right and was startled when I saw a boy leaning on the boulder I just jumped out off pointing what looked like a dagger at me. He was scowling, making his thick eyebrows furrow. It was a bit dark but thanks to the fireflies, I saw him a bit clearly. I calmed myself, he looked like the same age as me.

I smiled, crawling towards him as his face become more visible. I pointed my finger at the tip of his dagger, slowly lowering it. I hate sharp things. "My name is Mikel. Fifteen years old. I assure you, I mean no harm," I said gently, looking straight to his eyes. He only scoffed. Feeling a bit offended, I raised a brow. I sat down, crossing my legs as I observe him.

"What are you doing here?" I asked.

"Why should I answer you?" He answered defensively. I bit my lips.

"Because you might mean harm to me," I said, looking at the dagger in his rested hand.

He smirked when he catched me looking at his dagger. "You are undiserving to be used by this dagger. If I can, I might just use a stick or a rock on you."

I smiled. "Then that dagger must mean a lot you," I concluded. He nodded. "Yes, my father gave it to me," He said. My smile grew bigger as I nod.

"Tell me more about your dagger," I said and he raised a brow.

"Even if I would, I doubt you'll even understand it. For starters, it costs a lot. A lot more than your life. And second, it was made by the most skilled blacksmith of the neighboring kingdom. Also built with fine quality making it hard to break." He ironically explained as I listened carefully, making me grin every word he says. I stood up as he narrowed his eyes.

"Too bad it's mine now, is it?" I chuckled making him confused. I showed him the dagger in my fingers, holding the handle using my index and thumb. I smirked as he widen my eyes. He left his guard down, making the dagger easy to steal from his hand unnoticed. As much as I hate sharp things, I can't help but smirk at the money I can earn when I sell it. He stood up, glaring at me.

"You thief! I demand you to give it back to me this instant," He said with a hard expression. I shaked my head. "You said you don't mean harm," He added and I laughed.

"Did I harm you?" I asked playfully. Truthfully, I was going to give it back but his expression was just so amusing to not make fun of. He looked pissed. I mean, who wouldn't be? But he pissed me offed first. Calling me undeserving to be stabbed by his dagger? Incapable to understand about a freaking dagger? A dagger worth than my life? Stupid dagger.

"It's still the same," He said, handing out his hand. "Give it back before you regret it," He added.

My smirked dropped and was replaced with a bored one as I rolled me eyes. He seemed like an important person. I mean, owning a dagger that costs a fortune got to mean something, right? Unless of course he's lying. I looked at him. Is he a son from someone that works in the castle? If he is then I am indeed in trouble. I sighed, putting the dagger around the back of my waist. Shocked, he pulled his hand back and glared at me.

"You will regret this," He said and I scoffed.

I know.
