Chapter 10 - Chapter 10

MALLORY'S POINT OF VIEW

I couldn't help but feel nostalgic as I continued to stare at the lake. The events of the past felt like a dream compared to what's happening right now.

"Here you go" I heard Abbeigh speak beside me that made me snap out of my thoughts.

I looked at Abbeigh on the verge of tears. She was holding two fishing rods, handing me one of them, all the while holding a bucket full of bait.

I took one of the rods from her and hooked one of the baits on the hook before letting it fall into the lake, waiting for a fish to take it.

I could feel myself smile whole heartedly while the two of us fished. Abbeigh sat on the ground while I sat in my wheelchair.

Nothing changed. It was still the same. The same lake. The same sitting position. The same rod. The same time of day. All of it was nostalgic. But something was still different. And that difference broke my heart.

Tears fell from my eyes as I sniffled, giggling a bit. I could feel Abbeigh look at me, confused.

"Mallory? What's wrong?" She asked, confusion in her tone.

I looked at Abbeigh with a smile that left her astounded. "Why did you have to be like this..." I said, still smiling.

I maintained eye contact as Abbeigh sat there. It felt like time stopped, but it wasn't for long.

Abbeigh whipped her head to the lake the moment she felt something tug on the string of her fishing rod.

Abbeigh quickly stood up and pulled the fishing hook out of the lake with all her might, letting, whatever caught it, fly out of the lake and onto the dry land. Abbeigh picked up whatever she caught and placed it in a separate bucket from the one that was filled with bait.

As I was about to cheer for Abbeigh, I felt something tug on my fishing rod. "Abbeigh!" I called as I tried to fish it out.

Abbeigh ran beside me and helped me pull the hook out. The moment we pull the fishing rod with our best, the string snapped in two, sending us flying as we stumbled to the ground.

"Ooooooww" We both groaned as we tried to sit up.

We looked at each other and burst out laughing. It wasn't the first time that the string of my fishing rod snapped so it happening again after all these years made us laugh at how we were back then.

"You didn't get anything again!" Abbeigh exclaimed as she stood up and extended her hand out to me.

"It's the fish's fault for weighing a hundred pounds!" I said, taking her hand and standing only to make the both of us fall back down with Abbeigh on top of me.

I could feel myself feeling sad again as I remembered that I couldn't stand nor walk anymore. For a second there I thought I was back when we were kids.

Abbeigh giggled as she stood up, helping me this time, seating me down in my wheelchair. "Sorry, I forgot you couldn't walk" Abbeigh said, scratching the back of her neck, smiling at me.

"Yeah... um..." I cleared my throat and pointed to the buckets and fishing rods, "We should head back" I said, looking down at my feet.

"Okay!" Abbeigh smiled as she quickly picked up the equipments and returned them to the stall before coming back with the fish she caught in a plastic bag.

"Let's cook this for lunch" Abbeigh smiled as she hid the fish in a bag behind the wheelchair that I never noticed.

I nodded at Abbeigh before she pushed the wheelchair.

I felt my eyes water up as my vision blurs. Why did things have to change? Why did she have to change? It's not fair. It shouldn't be like this.

I looked at Abbeigh with worried eyes to which she just smiled at.

I'm gonna help her. I'm going to help her go back to who she was, when we were younger.
