As the rest of the children run off to play with the kids from the neighborhood apartments.
Ms.Johnson and Laura are busy cleaning up the kitchen from the early mess the orphanage calls breakfast.
"You know you really didn't have to do that, I'm eighteen now I don't need a cupcake." Laura says as she glances towards Ms.Johnson who is currently washing the dishes.
"Of all people you should know Laura that it is a tradition to receive a cupcake on your birthday. Besides I've been getting you a cupcake for the past seventeen years why would I stop now? Silly child" Hitting Lauras back with a slight slap trying to knock sense into her.
Massaging her back ... "Sorry I just thought you could save the money for the other children, I'm the oldest here I just thought you could use the money towards supplies or the next birthday."
"Nonsense! Your like my daughter, Laura darling... I've watched you grow up since you were a baby. I still remember the day you were left here on the stairs" Ms.Johnson spacing off as she's reminiscing about the past
"Ms.Johnson please not this story again. You've practically have told this over a hundred times now..." Laura rolling her eyes as she is picking up the remaining plates on the table.
"And I will continue to remember that day because I was blessed to have you left to me. Being able to see you grow into the beautiful young women you are today gives this old lady a sense of pride again" a tear slowly rolling down her cheek as she is watching Laura finishing cleaning the dinning room.
Looking back to her Laura couldn't help to give her usual soft smile for Ms.Johnson, while others haven't seen Laura smile she always tried to cheer up Ms.Johnson in any way she could.
For Laura, she always saw Ms.Johnson as her motherly figure. Growing up in the orphanage as long Laura has, she was forced to see other children adopted and taken to their new families while she still stayed there.
"Laura... theres something I been needing to give you." Ms.Johnson nervously looking towards Laura not knowing what to do next.
"Why are you so nervous? I thought you'd be glad I'm finally leaving after all these years!" laughing with a little grin on her face as she sits across from Ms.Johnson.
Sliding out of her pocket of the worn down jacket she's worn for years. Ms.Johnson placed a yellowed tattered letter on top the dinning room table in front of Laura.
"Whats this?" Laura curiously asked as she picked up the letter
"Its from the person who left you... I never opened it, I just thought it would be best if you opened it on your eighteenth birthday. Seventeen years later here we are." Ms.Johnson said was a sad voice as she could barely look at Laura.
Picking up the tattered yellowed letter from the dinning room table, Laura read the letter...
"Dear baby girl, our little Laura... we're so sorry"
